Chapter 113: The Eight Locations
He showed Dael the eight locations the following morning.
Not coordinates — the between-space quality of each location as the Observer had conveyed it, the specific character of the between-space gradient pulling most strongly toward return in each place. Not geographic description but between-space description. The feeling of each location’s pull.
Dael received this and sat with it for a long time.
Then opened the pattern documentation and the territorial maps and the accumulated field data from six months of work and began cross-referencing.
The process took the full morning.
Kael left Dael to it and went to the oversight board’s Tuesday session — which was running regardless of Observer contact, because the oversight board ran on Tuesdays, and that was more important than any specific extraordinary event.
The session covered three current cases. A city in the western region whose Church branch was implementing the Kingdom Agreement’s monitoring network dismantlement but had encountered institutional resistance from a guild administrator who wasn’t covered by the Agreement’s direct authority. The retroactive review’s second phase — Hael had identified forty-seven more cases from the period before the fifty-year review window, the Kingdom Agreement’s formal authority not extending to those but the oversight board’s moral authority reaching toward them. And the school’s expansion — the third building running at capacity, Calla requesting the board’s formal authorization for a fourth.
His mother chaired.
He was a board member.
He contributed three times — once on the guild administrator question, once on the retroactive review’s second phase, once on the school expansion.
The session ran two hours.
The guild administrator question resolved through a procedural mechanism Hael identified. The retroactive review’s second phase authorized with a modified approach that Sera had prepared documentation for. The school expansion authorized.
Tuesday.
Oversight board.
Running.
He went back to Dael at noon.
Dael had the cross-reference complete.
"The eight locations," Dael said. They had drawn a new map — not the territorial map of the worked territories but a world map, rough, the geographic scope beyond what the field documentation had covered until now. "The Observer’s gradient reading." They paused. "I’ve been running the pattern analysis against every data source we have." They paused. "The field reports, the node data Nara has been reading, the correction worker network’s observations, the pre-withdrawal historical records." They paused. "The Observer’s eight locations correlate with something in the data that I had identified as anomalous but hadn’t been able to interpret."
"What were you seeing," he said.
"Six of the eight locations show up in the historical node data as pre-withdrawal between-space concentration points," Dael said. "The places where the between-space was most densely present before the withdrawal." They paused. "The deepest presence correlating with the strongest return gradient." They paused. "Consistent with what the Observer conveyed — the between-space pulling most strongly toward where it was most fully itself before the withdrawal." They paused. "The sixth location specifically — " they paused. "The node data for the sixth location shows what I’ve been describing as a pre-withdrawal concentration anomaly." They paused. "The historical records there are unlike anything else in the data." They paused. "The between-space was not just concentrated there before the withdrawal." They paused. "It was — originating there."
Originating.
"The source," he said.
"One of them," Dael said carefully. "The node data doesn’t suggest a single origin point for the between-space itself — the between-space doesn’t have a geographic origin in that sense." They paused. "But there are locations where the between-space’s presence was qualitatively different from the surrounding territories. Not more concentrated. Different in character." They paused. "The sixth location is the most extreme example in our current data." They paused. "Whatever the between-space was expressing there before the withdrawal — it was something the historical records describe with language they don’t use for any other location." They paused. "The pre-System notation Calder has been translating." They paused. "The word translates approximately as — " they looked at their notes. "The word translates approximately as wellspring."
Wellspring.
He thought about the gradient.
About the water channel methodology.
About the between-space moving like water.
About wellsprings.
Where water originates.
Where the flow begins.
"The sixth location," he said. "Where is it."
Dael pointed on the rough world map.
Far north.
Further than any territory the network had reached.
Further than any correction worker in Orveth’s correspondence chains had reported.
The specific location conveyed by the Observer — the place where the between-space had been a wellspring before the withdrawal.
"How far," he said.
"Six weeks travel from Valdenmoor at road pace," Dael said. "More in difficult terrain." They paused. "The pre-System records Calder has been translating — there are references to this location. Not by the geographic coordinates but by the between-space quality. Multiple pre-System texts describing it as a place of exceptional between-space presence." They paused. "All of them also describing it as closed." They paused. "Sealed." They paused. "Since the withdrawal." They paused. "The wellspring sealed." They paused. "The water not flowing."
The wellspring sealed.
Since the withdrawal.
The return gradient pulling most strongly toward it because the between-space most wanted to return to where it had been flowing.
"If the wellspring opens," he said slowly.
"The pattern suggests a non-linear acceleration," Dael said. "The healing in the territories produces gradual return — measurable, real, the trajectory shortening. The wellspring opening would not be gradual." They paused. "The pattern data is insufficient to model the specific magnitude." They paused. "But the direction is clear." They paused. "The wellspring’s opening would change the character of the return at the scale of the world." They paused. "Not the door in Venmoor. Not the collective threshold." They paused. "The wellspring is — qualitatively different."
Qualitatively different.
He thought about the Observer.
About the watcher function of the fully present between-space.
About what the watcher had been watching for.
About the eight locations.
About the sixth location specifically.
About why the Observer had included it in the eight.
About what the watcher knew about the wellspring.
"The Observer," he said. "It conveyed the six location as one of the eight priority territories."
"Yes," Dael said.
"The other seven — the places where the gradient is pulling most strongly — those are the correction work territories. The deepest pull correlating with the deepest work needed." He paused. "The sixth location is different. The wellspring." He paused. "The Observer put it in the eight because it’s not correction work territory." He paused. "It’s — something else."
"Something else," Dael said. "Yes." They paused. "The pattern suggests the wellspring requires a different approach than the territorial root work." They paused. "Not because it’s more difficult." They paused. "Because it’s not wounded." They paused. "The wellspring didn’t accumulate the withdrawal’s organic root growth the way the other territories did." They paused. "It sealed." They paused. "The between-space didn’t leave roots when it withdrew from the wellspring. It sealed cleanly." They paused. "Like a door closing rather than a tide going out." They paused. "The root work approach isn’t what the wellspring needs." They looked at Kael. "The wellspring needs the door opened."
The door opened.
Not the permeable door of the Venmoor territory where the healing had progressed enough for the between-space to begin the return through the established connection.
The door of the wellspring where the between-space had sealed its source completely.
The door that wasn’t permeable.
That had never become permeable through the healing work because the wellspring hadn’t accumulated the wound’s organic growth — hadn’t needed the root disruption, hadn’t needed the gradient work.
Had simply been sealed.
Waiting.
For whoever could open it.
"Death’s Chosen," he said.
"The between-space access at the deepest layer," Dael said. "The Class operating in the transition space between the System and what was below the System." They paused. "The wellspring’s door is at the same layer as the Venmoor door." They paused. "But the approach is different." They paused. "The Venmoor door became permeable through healing. The wellspring door requires — presence at the source." They paused. "What opens a door that was sealed rather than wounded." They paused. "The pattern doesn’t have clear data on this." They paused. "The pattern has never encountered this before." They looked at him. "You’ll find out when you get there."
He looked at the map.
At the sixth location.
At six weeks north.
At the wellspring that had been sealed since the withdrawal.
At the work.
At the Observer watching from the quality of the whole.
At what the watcher had been waiting to see.
"The other seven territories," he said. "The correction work territories where the gradient is strongest from the return side. The network needs to reach them." He paused. "Not me specifically in all seven." He paused. "The school’s graduates and the correction workers in the network and the unified gradient principle." He paused. "The seven can be addressed through the network."
"Yes," Dael said. "The seven are gradient work. The methodology reaches them through the school and the correspondence chains." They paused. "The sixth location is the one that requires the specific function." They paused. "Death’s Chosen at the deepest layer." They paused. "The wellspring’s door." They paused. "That one is yours."
He looked at the map.
At the north.
At the sealed wellspring.
At the work that was his specifically.
At the Observer watching.
At what would change when the wellspring opened.
At the non-linear acceleration Dael couldn’t fully model.
At what it meant for the between-space’s return.
At what it meant for the trajectory.
At what it meant for the door in Venmoor and the thirty-one territories and the network and the school and the kingdom.
At what it meant for his mother pressing three copper coins into a priest’s palm.
At what it meant for the gutters running less grey.
At everything.
He sent a message to the Observer through the World Threat Response’s extended contact channel.
The wellspring. Six weeks north. I understand what it is. He paused. What do I need to know before I go.
The Observer’s response came through the between-space contact — not through the threading, the direct between-space channel the Observer occupied.
The wellspring was sealed by the between-space itself, it conveyed. Not by the withdrawal. The withdrawal happened elsewhere first. The wellspring sealed deliberately in response to the withdrawal — sealing the source to protect it from the cascade of absence that the withdrawal produced in the surrounding territories. A pause. The wellspring anticipated the wound. It sealed before the wound could reach it. A pause. The wellspring is intact. A pause. The between-space at the source, undiminished, behind a sealed door. A pause. The source has been there the entire time. A pause. Waiting for the work in the other territories to progress far enough that opening the wellspring would help rather than harm. A pause. The surrounding territories needed to begin the return before the wellspring could open safely. A pause. If the wellspring had opened into wounds rather than into partially healed territory — the flow would have been destabilizing rather than restorative. A pause. The wellspring waited for the work. A pause. The work has progressed far enough.
The wellspring waited for the work.
He held that.
The source of the between-space at this location had been intact the entire time — undiminished, fully present, sealed behind a door it had sealed itself to protect the source from being consumed by the wound’s cascade.
The between-space protecting its own source.
Waiting until the surrounding territories were ready to receive what would flow from the wellspring’s opening.
The healing progressing far enough that the flow would restore rather than destabilize.
The work preparing the ground.
The wellspring waiting for the ground to be ready.
And now.
The ground ready.
The wellspring waiting for the door to be opened.
What opens it, he conveyed back.
The Observer’s response: Presence. Yours specifically. Death’s Chosen at the deepest layer where the wellspring’s door was sealed. A pause. The same function as the territorial doors — but in reverse. A pause. The territorial doors: the between-space on the other side reaching toward the healing. You provide the connection.
A pause.
The wellspring: the between-space on the other side is not reaching. It is ready and waiting and has been for the full duration of the withdrawal. A pause. You do not provide the connection. You provide the recognition. A pause. The wellspring opens when Death’s Chosen is present at the door and the between-space on the other side recognizes the function it was sealed against. A pause. The between-space sealed against the absence. Death’s Chosen is the healing function — the opposite of absence. A pause. The wellspring recognizes the function and opens. A pause. That is all it requires.
That is all it requires.
Not the root work.
Not the gradient methodology.
Not sustained Spirit expenditure through crystallized layers.
Presence.
Recognition.
The wellspring opening because Death’s Chosen was there.
Because the healing function — the opposite of absence — had arrived at the door the source had sealed against the absence.
The door recognizing what had come.
Opening.
He sat with that for a long time.
Then looked at Dael.
"The wellspring opens when I’m present at the door," he said. "When the between-space behind it recognizes the healing function."
Dael looked at the documentation.
At the pattern.
"Yes," they said. "That’s consistent with the principle." They paused. "The correction function making space for the return. At the wellspring — the return is already ready. It doesn’t need space made." They paused. "It needs the door recognized as safe to open." They paused. "You being there is the recognition." They paused. "The healing function present at the sealed source." They paused. "The between-space understanding: the absence that caused the sealing is gone. The thing that stands at this door is the opposite of what the door was sealed against." They paused. "Open."
He looked at the north on the map.
At six weeks.
At the wellspring.
At the work that was his specifically.
At what happened when the source opened.
At the non-linear acceleration.
At everything that changed.
"When do you leave," Dael said.
He thought about the oversight board and the school’s seventh class and Brill writing the curriculum’s final section and Kel’s questions and the Thursday soup and his mother’s cracked red hands and the anchor.
"Two weeks," he said. "After the seventh class’s foundation sessions complete." He paused. "After Brill finishes the final curriculum section." He paused. "After Ora reads Yoli’s full documentation." He paused. "After the principle document reaches all thirty-one correction workers with confirmation." He paused. "Two weeks."
"Two weeks," Dael said.
"Come with me," Kael said.
Dael looked at the map.
At the sixth location.
At the wellspring.
At the pattern documentation that had never encountered this before.
"Yes," they said. "The pattern needs the data from the opening." They paused. "Whatever the non-linear acceleration looks like — it will be the most important pattern event in the documentation." They paused. "I need to be there." They paused. "And — " they stopped.
"And," he said.
"And I’ve been reading the data for six months," Dael said. "The territories. The correction workers. The expressions. The healing." They paused. "I’ve been reading the pattern of the work from inside the documentation." They paused. "I would like to see the wellspring open." They paused. "Not as data." They paused. "As itself." They paused. "I would like to see it."
He looked at Dael.
At twenty-two years in a containment cell writing the documentation nobody had asked for yet.
At the pattern reader who had been doing the work for the work and had rarely asked for the experience of the work itself.
"Yes," he said. "Come."
His System pulsed.
[WELLSPRING — IDENTIFIED — SIXTH LOCATION]
[SEALED BY THE BETWEEN-SPACE ITSELF — INTACT — UNDIMINISHED]
[OPENING MECHANISM: PRESENCE — RECOGNITION — ARRIVAL OF HEALING FUNCTION]
[DEPARTURE: TWO WEEKS]
[DAEL — COMING]
[NOTE: THE WELLSPRING WAITED FOR THE WORK.]
[NOTE: THE WORK HAS PROGRESSED FAR ENOUGH.]
[NOTE: THE GROUND IS READY.]
[NOTE: GO.]
[THE WORK CONTINUES.]
Author’s Note: The eight locations. The sixth: the wellspring — between-space source sealed by the between-space itself to protect it from the withdrawal’s cascade. Intact and undiminished. The opening mechanism: presence and recognition. Death’s Chosen at the door — the opposite of what the door was sealed against. Dael coming. Two weeks. Drop a Power Stone! 🔥
