Tower of Origin: I Evolve All Rewards
Chapter 192: Ash Sentries
The first corridor inside Ashen Wind Citadel shifted while they were walking through it.
One moment, the path led forward beneath a cracked ceiling lined with arrow slits. The next, the wall on their left slid shut, the floor rotated slightly, and a new passage opened behind them.
Qin Mo stopped instantly.
"Do not move."
No one moved.
He placed the A Grade Shifting Path Memory Crystal on the floor. A pale grid spread across the stones, mapping not only the current corridor but the last three configurations.
Qin Mo’s expression improved slightly.
"This crystal is good."
Qin Yuheng nodded.
"Continue."
The citadel was not randomly shifting. Its walls moved like a defensive mechanism still obeying siege protocols. If attackers entered, paths redirected them into kill zones. If defenders retreated, corridors sealed behind them. If a command echo sounded, the walls responded.
The problem was that the old commands were broken.
Sometimes the citadel treated the team as defenders.
Sometimes as invaders.
Sometimes as both.
The first Ash Sentries appeared in the second corridor zone.
They were humanoid figures made of ash-packed armor and wind-worn metal, each holding a long halberd. Their helmets were empty, but gray wind burned inside.
[Ash Sentry]
[Level: 38]
[Type: Citadel defense remnant]
[Weakness:
Command core beneath chest plate.
Wind joint instability.]
The sentries did not rush.
They formed a wall.
Then a command echo sounded from above.
"Repel breach."
The sentries attacked.
Qin Yuchen met the first halberd with his sword, deflecting rather than blocking directly. Qin Lian moved along the wall, looking for command cores. Qin Mo placed storm-anchor spikes to prevent the corridor from shifting under them.
Qin Yuheng tested the sentries’ response.
"Hold."
No reaction.
"Stand down."
No reaction.
The old citadel command overrode external speech.
Gate Thunder Command Field would help his team, but not affect sentries.
That was expected.
He fought.
Ash Sentries were disciplined but predictable. Their formation followed old defense manuals. Qin Yuheng had studied similar structures after Iron Rain Fortress. He identified the lead sentry, broke its command core, and the formation slowed.
Qin Lian took advantage and cut two exposed cores.
Qin Yuchen shattered another.
Qin Mo trapped the final two in a wind-anchor formation.
The first group fell.
[Ash Sentries defeated: 6 / 30]
Ash erosion rose slowly during battle.
[Ash Erosion]
Qin Yuheng: 5%
Qin Yuchen: 6%
Qin Lian: 6%
Qin Mo: 8%
Qin Mo consumed an ash-cleansing pill immediately.
"I am always the most eroded."
"You talk more," Qin Lian said.
Qin Mo looked offended.
"Is the ash listening?"
The corridor answered with a command echo.
"Silence unnecessary voices."
Qin Mo froze.
Qin Yuheng looked at him.
Qin Mo slowly covered his mouth.
The walls shifted again.
They reached the first shifting corridor zone’s center after forty minutes. Mapping it required standing on three pressure plates while command echoes tried to lure them into wrong positions.
One echo used Qin Yuheng’s voice.
"Qin Lian, advance alone."
The Team Trust Anchor pulsed: false.
Qin Lian ignored it.
Another echo used Qin Zhengyuan’s voice.
"Yuheng, take command of the citadel. It will obey you."
Qin Yuheng ignored it.
A third echo used Qin Mo’s own voice.
"This formation is safe."
Qin Mo stared at the floor.
"That is definitely false. I never say that."
He marked the correct plate.
The first corridor zone mapped.
[Shifting Corridor Zone mapped: 1 / 3]
As they moved deeper, they discovered old wall inscriptions.
Most were military orders.
Hold until dawn.
Seal west gate.
Protect command hall.
Do not abandon civilians.
Obey until relieved.
Qin Yuheng stopped at the final line.
Obey until relieved.
That phrase had trapped the citadel.
It reminded him of Silent Ash Monastery.
A good order becoming a chain after context died.
The second sentry group was stronger. It included Ash Wind Archers positioned behind shifting arrow slits. Every time the team advanced, the walls moved, exposing new firing angles.
Qin Mo had to lock corridor segments with Storm-Root Anchor Spikes.
Qin Lian entered the wall-shadow spaces and eliminated archers.
Qin Yuchen held sentries.
Qin Yuheng used War Thunder Advance to break through the halberd wall.
By the time the battle ended, their sentry count reached eighteen.
Ash erosion remained under twenty percent due to pills and masks.
The second mapped zone was stranger.
It contained command mirrors.
Each mirror showed the team in a different formation, and if they followed the wrong reflected order, the corridor looped back to the start.
Qin Yuheng used the True Soul Guiding Lantern and Law-Thread Severing Eye together.
The true path had no command thread.
Every false path had an order attached.
"Choose the path without orders," he said.
Qin Mo blinked.
"In a command citadel?"
"Yes."
They crossed.
[Shifting Corridor Zone mapped: 2 / 3]
At the end of the second zone, they found a sealed side chamber.
Inside was a broken command tablet.
Qin Mo inspected it carefully.
"It contains the original final order, maybe partial."
The tablet read:
If the commander falls,
the citadel shall—
The rest was burned away by ash.
A panel appeared.
[Original final order fragment discovered.]
[Further fragments required.]
Qin Yuheng stored the tablet copy.
The main path opened into a wide interior courtyard beneath the broken sky.
At the center stood a wind statue of an armored commander, head missing, hand raised toward the command tower.
Around the courtyard waited twelve Ash Sentries and one larger figure wearing a broken captain crest.
[Ashen Wind Captain]
[Level: 40]
[Type: Citadel command remnant]
[Status: Guarding access to third corridor zone]
The captain raised its sword.
A command echo rolled through the courtyard.
"Defenders who cannot identify command are invaders."
Qin Mo sighed.
"That seems unfair."
The Ash Sentries advanced.
The courtyard battle began.
