Downstairs, Janelle Mills had originally planned to grab a cab.

But Trevor pulled open the front passenger door and looked at her.

Janelle had no choice but to get into Trevor’s car. As soon as the engine started, she said to him, "Drop me off when you pass by a bookstore." She figured he must be really busy.

"What do you need to buy?" Trevor held the steering wheel with both hands, eyes still on the road as he asked.

"Some idiom chain‑game cards for Ethan." The girl was very straightforward. "I promised to play games with him. He’s bored out of his mind day after day."

There was a brief silence in the car. Trevor didn’t respond.

Janelle suddenly felt a bit awkward. Did he think... she was taking herself too seriously?

So she turned to look at him and explained, "I feel like if you promise a kid something, you have to follow through, otherwise he’ll keep waiting."

He kept driving, still not saying anything.

"If you think it’s not appropriate for me to go back to the hospital, you can just take the cards over yourself and tell him I hurt my leg, I’ll go see him when it’s better." She made it up as she went, giving herself a way out.

Trevor’s lips curved slightly in a small smile. "If you’re hurt, shouldn’t you be in the hospital? Then he’ll go looking for you."

"Th‑the hospital... there are so many hospitals in Riventhal, you know how big Riventhal is? I don’t necessarily have to be in that one." Janelle was all kinds of embarrassed, even stuttering as she spoke.

"So you’d rather jinx yourself into getting hurt than go see him?"

"Of course not!" Janelle nearly jumped up. She whipped her head around, her bright, expressive eyes staring at him as she explained herself. "I just... just worry that you’ll be unhappy! After all... we’re pretending."

"It’s not like I own the hospital. Why would I be unhappy?" he answered.

"But he’s your little brother!" Janelle eyed him. What kind of attitude was this? Was he going to let her go or not?

Only then did Trevor turn to glance at her. His expression was calm, indifferent. "Don’t overthink it." There wasn’t much emotion on his face.

Janelle was still embarrassed. As she pulled her gaze back, she happened to see a bookstore not far ahead. "Stop stop stop stop! There’s the bookstore!!"

The car nearly sped past, but Trevor reacted fast. His long leg stepped on the brake, and the Maybach came to a smooth stop right in front of the Xinhua Bookstore entrance.

"You go ahead, don’t wait for me!" The girl quickly unbuckled her seatbelt; she really didn’t want to waste his precious time.

He said nothing.

Before getting out, she shot him a quick look, then hurriedly opened the door, got out, closed it, and walked straight toward the bookstore without looking back!
