"Big brother, where did you go?" Ethan’s slightly complaining voice came through. "How long has it been since you last came to see me?"

"Ethan." Trevor sank down into the sofa.

Janelle also walked over to him.

Trevor spoke gently and patiently, "Didn’t I tell you before I left? I had some things to take care of. Once I’m back in Riventhal, I’ll go to the hospital to see you, remember?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"I didn’t forget, I just miss you." The little guy on the other end of the phone lowered his eyes and pouted, sounding rather unhappy. "Stella isn’t here, Justin Kingston hasn’t come either, and I haven’t seen Dr. Shelby in a long time."

To him, it felt like all the familiar figures had suddenly disappeared.

Janelle vaguely guessed what Ethan was feeling. She squatted down beside Trevor and lifted her eyes to look at him.

The phone’s quality was too good, and the room was very quiet, so even without the speaker on, she could hear what Ethan was saying.

Just as Trevor was thinking about how to answer his little brother—

"Ethan." The girl spoke softly. "It’s your sister Janelle."

Trevor’s gaze lifted slightly, his gentle eyes turning toward her.

"Ethan, can you hear me?" Janelle’s kind voice carried a great sense of comfort.

Trevor turned on the speaker and held the phone up to her lips, sitting on the sofa and holding it for her.

"Sister Janelle!" Ethan suddenly sounded very happy. "I’ve been missing you and Trevor! When are you coming to see me?"

"We miss you too."

Janelle was squatting by Trevor’s long legs, propping her chin up with both hands. "Ethan, you have to listen to Dad, and also to the doctors. When I come back, I’ll take you to meet some new friends! We can play idiom word-chain games with them!"

"What new friends? What’s his name?" Ethan took it very seriously.

Janelle thought for a bit. "Not just one new friend, a whole group. Be good and wait for me, okay?"

"Okay." Ethan said it straight out. "Bye-bye." Then he hung up.

Janelle froze for a moment, then looked up at Trevor. "He just hung up like that?" The two of them were so close their gazes met in midair.

Trevor nodded. "Ethan isn’t good at socializing."

She could understand that.

Trevor looked at her and kindly reminded, "Ethan is a special child. Anything anyone promises him, he’ll insist they follow through on."

"I can keep this promise." She glanced at him, understanding what he meant by that. "I didn’t lie to him."

Trevor, however, shook his head, his mood seeming a little heavy.

That left Janelle quite puzzled. "What is it? You think there’s something wrong with it? He’s getting treatment, slowly recovering, he needs his own social circle."

Trevor thought for a moment, then reached out to take her wrist and pulled her, who was squatting, to sit down beside him.

Then he analyzed it very seriously. "Ethan has been alone for too long. He really doesn’t fit in, and he doesn’t know how to get along with people."

She listened earnestly, nodding in agreement, but felt he wasn’t done yet. "And then?"

"Kids these days all have a strong sense of superiority. I’m afraid they’ll accidentally blurt out the truth and hurt Ethan. He hasn’t recovered enough to be around normal children yet."

The girl nodded. "I understand what you’re worried about." Then the corners of her lips lifted slightly. "But why don’t you ask me where I plan to take him?"

When Trevor heard that, he felt there was something in her words as well, and turned his eyes to her. "Go on, I’m listening."

Janelle told him, "There’s a private welfare home on the outskirts of Riventhal. There are eleven children there who were abandoned because of birth defects, but they’re all very kind."

Trevor was slightly stunned, puzzled that she actually had ties with a welfare home.

But he didn’t ask anything, only felt that he understood her a little more.

Janelle stood up and said to him, "Let’s go down now, okay? We’ll find Dr. Shelby and see what’s really going on."

"Mm." Trevor also stood, and they stepped out together.

Whenever they returned to the topic of Jocelyn Morgan, everyone’s mood turned sorrowful and heavy.

No news, sometimes, might just be the best news.
