Venerable Demon Chef
Chapter 52 - 50: Even I Can’t Stand It Anymore
Mo Qi didn’t take the Pig Emperor’s advice. He had a feeling things weren’t that simple.
How could there be such a coincidence? They had just arrived, and a Beast Tide was about to break out.
’Are Beast Tides so easy to form?’
Besides, the Earth-level Spiritual Ore mine was nearby, and the Void Sect had powerful experts stationed there.
If a Beast Tide were really about to break out, they would have certainly received a warning in advance.
"By the way, you said you sensed an abnormal energy fluctuation, didn’t you? Is it still there?" Mo Qi asked.
The Pig Emperor, nestled in Mo Qi’s arms, snorted. "Of course! And there are lots of them, in every direction!"
’Lots of them in every direction?’
"You mean these energy fluctuations aren’t one solid mass, but exist as individual points?" Mo Qi asked.
The Pig Emperor nodded, once again urging Mo Qi to hurry up and run.
Individual points. Mo Qi seized on the idea, and a theory began to form in his mind.
Just as he was about to analyze it further, Qi Tian’s grating voice once again reached his ears.
"Whew, a false alarm. I say, Captain Mo, is this the ’danger’ you were so convinced of?"
"Get lost and stop bothering me!" Mo Qi had no time to waste on Qi Tian. He gave a direct order, "Liu Hui, if he spouts any more nonsense, kill him!"
Liu Hui stepped forward, blocking Qi Tian’s path.
Qi Tian couldn’t stand it and was about to erupt, but a large hand clamped down on his shoulder. He froze, speechless.
"El... Elder?" Qi Tian twisted his head around and saw Ye Lei.
"Get lost!" Ye Lei snapped.
Though he despised Mo Qi, Qi Tian didn’t dare defy Ye Lei’s command. He could only step aside, glaring venomously at Mo Qi.
"Mo Qi, have you discovered something else?" Ye Lei’s attitude toward Mo Qi had changed drastically.
Although he and Ye Dian still hadn’t detected anything unusual, he had seen the look of shock and gravity on Mo Qi’s face just now.
Having learned his lesson, Ye Lei no longer dared to underestimate Mo Qi.
"Wait a moment. I need to confirm a few things first," Mo Qi said, giving Ye Lei a cool glance and waving his hand dismissively.
Before, if Mo Qi had dared to speak to him with such an attitude, Ye Lei would have slapped him down long ago.
But now, he had no choice but to wait obediently on the sidelines.
Ye Dian and all the other disciples were waiting as well.
"Hmph, just putting on a show," Qi Tian muttered under his breath.
Diao Qing still wore his gentle smile, but a sharp glint flashed in his eyes as he watched Mo Qi. No one knew what he was thinking.
"Pig Emperor, show me the points with the abnormal energy fluctuations."
"I’m telling you, Mo Qi, what do you want to see that for? Saving our own skins is what’s most important!" Though reluctant, the Pig Emperor still used its Spiritual Power to map out the points of abnormal energy and transmit the image into Mo Qi’s mind.
"Basic Beast-Attracting Array. It can disguise itself and emit mating calls, which are irresistible to Low-level Demon Beasts. Effective range: a five-hundred-li radius."
The information about the energy fluctuations came from the Chaos Scripture.
’It really is an array!’
Mo Qi’s earlier suspicion was confirmed.
This confirmed one thing: someone was targeting the Void Sect. This Basic Beast-Attracting Array had been deliberately deployed to engineer a small-scale Beast Tide.
Within a five-hundred-li radius, there had to be hundreds of thousands, if not over a million, Low-level Demon Beasts.
One could only imagine the scene of millions of Demon Beasts swarming in from every direction.
Even Late-stage Vajra Realm experts like Ye Lei and Ye Dian would likely struggle to survive.
Whoever set up the array, their intentions were utterly vicious and malicious.
The only viable option was to break the array before the Beast Tide was fully unleashed.
"Pig Emperor, can you find the location of the point with the strongest energy signature?" Mo Qi asked.
"You’re not actually going to play the hero and try to break the array, are you?" Mo Qi had shared the information with the Pig Emperor, who now understood the situation and asked back in shock.
"Enough nonsense. As long as this array stands, even if we don’t die in the Beast Tide, we’ll be trapped here. Besides, I can’t just abandon Liu Hui."
"You’re insane!" the Pig Emperor huffed. "But I admire your guts. Don’t you worry. When it comes to sensing energy fluctuations, if I’m second, no one dares claim first! If you really manage to break the array... heheh, I’ll grant you a fortuitous encounter."
Mo Qi rolled his eyes. ’Grant me a fortuitous encounter, my ass. That lazy pig must have found something good for himself.’
"Elders, a Beast Tide is about to erupt here," Mo Qi said to Ye Lei and Ye Dian, taking a deep breath.
What? A Beast Tide?!
Everyone’s face fell in terror.
"Hahaha! Mo Qi, if you’re going to be an alarmist, at least come up with a believable excuse! A Beast Tide? Why not just say it’s the end of the world?" Qi Tian scoffed.
How could a Beast Tide possibly happen in broad daylight, under a clear sky?
Even Ye Lei and Ye Dian were full of suspicion. A Beast Tide wasn’t something that just appeared out of nowhere. Besides, if one were truly imminent, they should have received a warning by now.
However, before they could voice their doubts, the ground began to tremble.
A chaotic cacophony of bestial roars and thundering footsteps echoed from the distance, accompanied by a pungent, foul stench.
At this, everyone panicked.
Even a fool could recognize what that commotion meant. Even if it wasn’t a full-blown Beast Tide, it was definitely countless Demon Beasts stampeding toward them.
"Elder, what do we do?" a disciple asked in a panic.
’What do we do? Hell if I know!’
Ye Lei and Ye Dian were at a loss. There was no reasoning with a Beast Tide.
In the history of the Mountain and Sea Empire, every Beast Tide had brought utter devastation, leaving rivers of blood in its wake as countless mortals and Cultivators met violent ends.
"Elders, I suggest you set up a concealed defensive position right here. Don’t confront the Beast Tide head-on. Suppress your auras as much as possible and don’t make a sound. Buy as much time as you can," Mo Qi suddenly said.
Ye Lei froze. ’You’re suggesting what *we* should do? What about you?’
"Mo Qi, you’ve figured something out, haven’t you?" Ye Lei wasn’t an idiot; he quickly picked up on the implication in Mo Qi’s words.
"There’s not much time, so I’ll make this quick. This Beast Tide isn’t a natural disaster. Someone deliberately created it with an array, and we’re likely the target. You all hide here for now. I’ll do my best to find the array’s core and destroy it. Otherwise, we’ll have a hard time escaping."
Before his voice had even faded, Qi Tian couldn’t help but sneer again. "Putting aside how absurd the idea of an man-made Beast Tide is, let’s just pretend it’s true. You’re a good-for-nothing who hasn’t even condensed True Essence. What makes you think you can break an array? I think you’re just trying to—"
SLAP!
Before he could finish, Diao Qing sent him flying with a single slap.
"That mouth of his is just too damn annoying. Even I can’t stand it. Constantly whining and nagging like a little bitch." Diao Qing said, flicking his hand in disgust.
Although he and Mo Qi were on opposing sides—mortal enemies, in fact—Diao Qing was clear-headed enough to know where to stand when facing a Beast Tide.
Liu Hui, standing to the side, froze with his hand raised mid-air. He shot Diao Qing an annoyed glare.
’That was supposed to be my job.’
"Diao Qing, are you insane? Why did you hit me?" Qi Tian demanded, clutching his mouth and glaring at Diao Qing.
"If you don’t shut your mouth, I’ll kill you myself," Ye Lei said coldly before Diao Qing could answer.
