Chapter 133: we need to move

The mansion was eerily quiet in the aftermath of the violent coup. The grand halls that had once echoed with the sounds of battle were now filled with the low hum of healing magic and the occasional murmur of servants cleaning up the bloodstains. Trevor had personally overseen the immediate medical care for Caroline, ensuring the best healers were at her bedside. She lay unconscious in a private room, her breathing shallow but stable for now, the dark poison still fighting against the healing energy flowing through her veins.

In another wing of the mansion, in a smaller, more intimate sitting room bathed in soft lamplight, two women met again after what felt like an eternity.

Mrs. Sylvia stood near the window, her elegant figure silhouetted against the moonlight. She was still dressed in the remnants of her combat attire — a fitted black outfit that hugged her mature, voluptuous curves. Her long dark hair was slightly disheveled from the fight, but she carried herself with the same graceful authority that had defined her for years.

Mia entered the room quietly, closing the door behind her. The two women stared at each other for a long moment, the weight of years of shared secrets and hidden lives hanging between them.

"It’s been too long," Mia said softly, stepping closer. "I never thought we’d meet again like this... especially not under these circumstances."

Mrs. Sylvia turned, a small, tired smile touching her lips. "The aviator would have laughed at how things turned out tonight. He always said chaos finds the ones who try to run from it."

They sat together on the velvet couch, the conversation flowing naturally at first — random, almost nostalgic. They spoke about old missions, the strange quirks of the Hunter organization, and how the world had changed since their younger days. The easy familiarity between them was still there, even after all this time apart.

Mia eventually leaned forward, her voice lowering. "Sylvia... I need you to keep my identity a secret. Especially from Trevor. He doesn’t know everything yet, and I’m not ready for him to find out like this."

Mrs. Sylvia nodded without hesitation. "I already made sure of that. No one outside this room knows the full truth. Your secret is safe with me, as it always has been."

Mia let out a relieved breath, reaching over to squeeze Sylvia’s hand. "Thank you. And thank you for answering the call so quickly tonight. I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t arrived when you did."

Mrs. Sylvia’s expression softened. "You know I’d never abandon you. Not after everything we’ve been through." She paused, then asked gently, "Does Trevor know about—?"

The question hung in the air, unfinished.

Meanwhile, in Caroline’s recovery room, Trevor sat beside her bed, his hand gently holding hers. The healers had done what they could, but the poison was stubborn, requiring more than conventional medicine.

Lisa and Vespera stood nearby, both looking concerned but determined.

Lisa spoke first, her voice warm yet urgent. "My suggestion is this: Vespera and I go immediately through Vespera’s portal magic to the Labyrinth of Eternal Thorns in China. We can retrieve the cure faster without putting you at risk. You should stay here and take care of Caroline. She needs you right now."

Vespera nodded, her silver hair catching the light. "I can open a stable portal. We’ll move quickly and return before the poison takes her completely."

Trevor listened carefully, his thumb stroking the back of Caroline’s hand. The offer was logical. He had grown much stronger after bonding with the succubuses and the Dwarf Goddess, but Caroline’s condition was critical. Leaving her now felt wrong.

He thought about it for a long moment, weighing the risks. The labyrinth was extremely dangerous, and he didn’t want to lose either woman. But ultimately, he shook his head.

"No," he said firmly. "I appreciate the offer, but I’m not sending you two alone into that place. We’ll find another way, or we’ll go together when Caroline is stable. I’m not leaving her side right now."

Lisa and Vespera exchanged glances but didn’t argue. They respected his decision.

Outside, the mansion was on high alert. Due to the violent events of the night — the failed coup, the deaths, and the attack on the Hunter leadership — the school had been cancelled for an entire week. The official story was a "major security incident," but those in the know understood the truth was far darker.

Trevor stayed by Caroline’s side, his mind racing with worry and determination. The fight wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.

Vespera stood on the other side of the bed, her silver hair catching the light as she placed a cool hand on Caroline’s forehead. Her violet eyes narrowed in concentration as she re-assessed the condition with her succubus magic.

After a long moment, she pulled her hand back and shook her head grimly.

"It’s not possible to wait," Vespera said quietly, her voice carrying a cold certainty. "The poison is ancient and aggressive. It’s attacking her life force directly. If we delay even a few more hours, the damage may become irreversible. We need the cure from the Labyrinth of Eternal Thorns now."

Lisa, standing near the window with her arms crossed, nodded in agreement. Her blonde hair shimmered as she stepped closer, her expression soft but firm. "Vespera is right, Trevor. Caroline’s condition is deteriorating faster than we anticipated. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to save her. We should go immediately — Vespera and I can handle the labyrinth while you stay here if you must. But we cannot afford to hesitate."

Trevor’s jaw tightened. He looked down at Caroline’s pale face, guilt twisting like a knife in his chest. He had held resentment toward her for so long — for the complicated family dynamics, for the distance, for things that now felt so small and petty in the face of her suffering. The thought of leaving her side while she fought for her life made his stomach churn.

"I know you’re both powerful," he said, voice low and conflicted. "But I can’t shake this feeling... if something happens to her while I’m gone, I’ll never forgive myself. I spent so much time holding onto resentment, keeping her at arm’s length. And now, when she needs me most..."

He trailed off, running a hand through his hair in frustration. The weight of guilt pressed down on him heavily. Vespera and Lisa exchanged glances, both understanding the depth of his internal struggle, but neither pushed him immediately.

Just then, the door opened softly. Roseman entered the room, his face drawn and tired, bandages visible under his shirt from the earlier battle. He looked at his daughter for a long moment, pain flashing in his eyes, before turning to Trevor.

"You should go," Roseman said quietly but firmly. "I and my most trusted maids will take very good care of her. We have the best medical staff on standby, and I will not leave her side. You’ve already done more than enough tonight. Let us handle this part while you retrieve what she needs."

Trevor hesitated, looking between Caroline’s frail form and the two powerful women waiting for his decision. The guilt still gnawed at him — the fear that leaving her now would be another failure.

Roseman stepped closer, placing a hand on Trevor’s shoulder. "You saved her life tonight. You saved all of us. Now go finish this. Bring back the cure. I promise you — she will be here when you return."

After a long, heavy pause, Trevor finally nodded. "Alright. We’ll go now."

He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Caroline’s forehead. "Hold on," he whispered. "I’m coming back with the cure. I won’t let you down."

Vespera opened a stable violet portal with a wave of her hand. The swirling gateway hummed with power, leading directly toward the dangerous Labyrinth of Eternal Thorns in China.

Trevor stood up, giving Roseman one last nod before stepping toward the portal with Lisa and Vespera.

As they were about to enter, Roseman called out softly from behind them.

"Thank you, Trevor."

Trevor paused for a brief moment, then nodded casually without turning around. "Just make sure she’s still here when I get back."

With that, he stepped through the portal alongside the two succubuses, disappearing into the violet light.

The room fell silent once more, save for the soft beeping of medical equipment and Caroline’s labored breathing. Roseman sat down heavily beside his daughter’s bed, taking her hand in his.

The weight of everything that had happened tonight settled heavily on his shoulders as he watched over her, praying that Trevor would succeed in time.
