Chapter 40: Just Sleep

The carriage kept moving forward along the road, and I found my eyes drifting down to the ground beside us. Long streaks of darkened mud stretched across the path, uneven and smeared in a way that immediately told me what I was looking at. It was blood, dragged across the road in a continuous trail, and it could only belong to those two elves.

A few seconds later, the city entrance came into full view as the road sloped upward toward the gates. I lifted my head and spotted the two guards ahead, waiting near the entrance for the gates to open. Their horses stood still, but the elves were still tied behind them. They were not moving anymore. Their bodies were limp, twisted from being dragged for so long, their skin torn and dirt-streaked, and there was no sign of life left in them.

"Damn..." I muttered. "Poor people."

The carriage shifted slightly to the left as it climbed the slope and then came to a stop near the entrance.

"That’s it," the coachman said. "Hop off, kids."

"I’d say thank you," I muttered as I stepped down from the carriage, "but I’d rather not."

He smirked. "Good doing business with ya, kid."

I shrugged slightly. "Yeah, yeah. Sure."

Mio climbed down after me with a quiet groan, and the two of us stood there for a moment as the carriage rolled away, heading back down the slope until it disappeared from view. The gates were already open, so we walked straight into the city without being stopped.

The streets were quiet, almost unnaturally so. At this hour, most people were already inside, and only a few guards patrolled the area, their footsteps echoing faintly against the stone. The buildings loomed on either side of the street, their windows dark, and the absence of noise made the place feel strangely empty compared to how lively it must have been during the day.

I glanced back and noticed Mio lagging behind. She had leaned her back against the door of a blacksmith’s shop, breathing heavily as she tried to recover. I stopped and waited for her, crossing my arms as I watched her catch her breath. She looked completely worn out, and honestly, I could not blame her.

"Sorry," she said after a moment, taking a deeper breath. "Let’s go. My house is close."

"Alright."

We continued walking, passing a few guards who gave us brief, suspicious glances but did not stop us. As we moved further into the city, I spotted the tavern where I had been staying earlier.

"Hey," I said, nodding toward it. "The school was supposed to deliver my uniform there. Can we make a quick stop? It’s kinda urgent."

Mio simply nodded.

We turned left and entered the tavern. It was mostly empty, with only a few late-night patrons scattered around, quietly minding their own business. Behind the counter stood Kembeliona, the old man, exactly where I expected him to be.

"Hey," I greeted as I approached the counter. "Evening."

"Ah, kid," he said with a smile as he leaned down behind the counter. "This came in today. Tomorrow’s your first day, eh?"

He pulled out a neatly folded uniform and handed it to me.

"Yeah," I said as I took it from him.

"Excited?" he asked.

"You have no idea," I replied flatly.

He chuckled. "Ah, this new generation... oh, by the way, kid, we don’t have any free rooms anymore. You got a place to stay?"

"I’ll figure something out."

"Who’s this girl?" Kembeliona asked with a smirk. "A girlfriend?"

"A fellow prisoner," I said, taking a step back. "Thanks for holding onto my uniform, Kembeliona."

"Wait, fellow prisoner?" he said, frowning.

"Good night, Kembeliona."

"Hey, don’t just say something like that and leave!"

"Long day, believe me. Talk to you later."

I stepped back outside and continued walking through the streets.

A few minutes later, we reached her place. It was a small house tucked near a fountain in what looked like the edge of a market area, but the location felt slightly off. The main road opened into a wider space where stalls would probably fill the area during the day, but her house sat just far enough to the side that it bordered a narrower, dimly lit stretch that felt closer to an alley than a proper street.

The surroundings were quiet, with only the sound of water from the fountain breaking the silence. The buildings nearby were close together, their walls worn and uneven, and the lack of light made the place feel more cramped than it probably was during the day.

Mio walked up to the door, grabbed the handle, lifted it slightly, and pushed it open.

We stepped inside.

The space was small, barely more than a single room. A worn couch sat near one wall, and the kitchen area consisted of little more than a single counter with a few basic tools scattered across it. A small hearth rested in the corner, unlit, its stone darkened from use. A thin curtain divided the main space from the bedroom, though it did little to hide what was behind it.

I could see the bed from where I stood. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

There was only one, along with a single wardrobe beside it.

That was it.

"C-cool place," I muttered, following her inside.

"Thanks." Mio stopped in the middle of the room and turned toward me. "I’m tired... guess I’ll hit the bed."

"Same here." I pointed at the small couch. "Can I lay there?"

"Sure." She shrugged. "But I don’t have any extra pillows or mattresses."

"I thought the academy would provide dormitories for their students," I said. "Why don’t you stay there?"

"The academy is far away... this is just a safe house of mine," she muttered. "Anyway, goodnight."

"Hmm." I nodded. "Night."

Mio walked off, pulling the curtain aside just enough to slip into the small bedroom. I exhaled and plopped down on the couch, leaning back heavily. Damn... what a day this had been. The Circle, that teleporting nightmare, the constant fear... but apparently it was one of the better ways to earn coin around here.

And the spells, Fireball and Heal... shit. I could really cast magic now. Maybe putting more points into Mage would unlock even stronger ones? But that meant leveling up first. Quests. Monsters. Fighting.

"I gotta sleep..."

My eyes drifted toward the bedroom. The curtain was slightly parted.

Through the narrow gap, I could see Mio undressing. She pulled the ragged top over her head, revealing smooth, pale skin and a toned, feminine body. Her breasts were full and perky, nipples still slightly hardened from earlier. She slid her bottoms down next, exposing the gentle curve of her hips and a neatly trimmed patch of dark hair above her pussy, pink, soft. Her ass was round and firm, the kind that made it hard to look away. She moved with quiet grace, completely unaware I was watching.

I felt my face heat up. A rush of blood went south. I quickly closed my eyes and turned my head away, pressing my face into the couch cushion.

"Sleep," I whispered to myself. "Just... sleep..."
