Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 72: What Is Not Yours Is Unattainable
Seraphina Sutton’s face paled, her lips trembling as she struggled for an explanation.
Similarly, Kaden Xavier’s expression shifted slightly, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides.
Joy Lynch and Felix Vance both crossed their arms, clearly enjoying the show.
"They say Captain Xavier married young. I wonder if you could tell me, Captain Xavier, what’s your wife’s name? Is it Flight Attendant Sutton, by any chance?" Joy Lynch asked playfully.
"I’ve met his wife a few times, and she’s right here among us. Dr. Wynter..."
"Felix!"
Seraphina Sutton hastily cut Felix Vance off, her face tense.
"Flight Attendant Sutton, is there a problem?"
Felix Vance met Seraphina Sutton’s gaze with a smirk that didn’t reach his eyes.
Seraphina Sutton’s heart pounded with anxiety.
"Felix, don’t you have a flight to pilot?" Kaden Xavier’s face was a cold, emotionless mask, but his voice was thick with gritted-teeth fury.
One icy glare was enough; Felix Vance didn’t dare speak again.
"Dr. Wynter, you’re no longer an employee here. None of this has anything to do with you." Kaden Xavier’s gaze shifted to Wren Wynter’s delicate face, his tone laced with a warning.
"It doesn’t, but Seraphina Sutton framed me, claiming I was the one who reported her. That makes it my business! I refuse to take the fall for someone else!" Wren Wynter’s every word was deliberate and powerful.
"If I did it, I’d admit it. But I didn’t, and no one is going to pin this on me!"
She let out a cold laugh and pointed at Kaden Xavier and Seraphina Sutton, a sarcastic smile playing on her lips.
"Captain Xavier, do you dare tell everyone whether or not Seraphina Sutton is really your wife? Or is it that Captain Xavier is cheating on his wife..."
"I’m not cheating!"
Kaden Xavier’s expression was incredibly grim.
He didn’t understand why Wren Wynter was being so aggressive.
’Her personality has always been so docile and obedient. When did her words become so sharp?’
"What? Flight Attendant Sutton isn’t Captain Xavier’s wife?"
"Huh? If that’s true, doesn’t that make Flight Attendant Sutton a homewrecker? And Captain Xavier just said the baby in her belly is his. Doesn’t that make the baby illegitimate?"
The word ’illegitimate’ was particularly jarring to Seraphina Sutton’s ears.
She secretly clenched her fists, her heart filled with resentment.
’Sooner or later, I will make my child a rightful member of the Xavier Family!’
"She was so smug and showy before. I can’t believe she’s just a homewrecker."
"Exactly. A homewrecker."
The overwhelming tide of harsh comments made Seraphina Sutton’s legs go weak. She staggered, her body falling backward by inertia.
Kaden Xavier caught her just in time, worried that the devastating blow would affect the baby.
’The doctor did say she needed to rest quietly...’
"Wren, have you made enough of a scene?! If anything happens to Seraphina and the baby, I’ll make you pay!"
"Who are you going to make pay?!"
Suddenly, a commanding and authoritative voice boomed from the company entrance.
Kaden Xavier froze on the spot.
"Old Madam Xavier."
The two senior executives both recognized Old Madam Xavier and didn’t dare to be disrespectful, quickly bowing low.
Old Madam Xavier gave a slight nod, walked straight to Wren Wynter, and took Wren’s hands in hers, speaking gently with affection.
"Wren, you’ve been wronged."
Seeing Old Madam Xavier, Wren Wynter felt an unexpected sting in her nose. She took a deep breath, forcing back all her grievances.
"Grandma, I’m fine."
After comforting Wren, Old Madam Xavier turned, her gaze sweeping over Seraphina Sutton and Kaden Xavier as she scolded them sharply.
"This is ridiculous!" Old Madam Xavier said. "Kaden Xavier, do you even remember who your wife is? Getting all tangled up with another woman right in front of her! Is this how the Xavier Family raised you? Are you determined to follow in your father’s footsteps?"
Perhaps it was the mention of his father, but Kaden Xavier’s face turned deathly pale, and he slowly distanced himself from Seraphina Sutton.
The crowd erupted in discussion, shocked that Mrs. Xavier was among them. They grew curious, wondering who the unlucky woman was.
"Grandma, it’s not what you think. You know, this baby..."
"So what? Wasn’t the thank-you gift we gave the Lynch Family generous enough? Even if you have to take care of his wife and child, it shouldn’t be like this! Think about why your mother became the way she is now. Do you want your wife to end up like that too?"
Wren Wynter had actually heard a little about this. It was said that Kaden Xavier’s mother, Helen Sawyer, had also been a well-bred lady from a good family, not at all like the shrewish woman she was now.
Everything changed after Kaden Xavier’s father had an affair.
Not long after Helen Sawyer gave birth to Kaden Xavier, she discovered Mr. Xavier was cheating.
If Helen Sawyer hadn’t been tough enough, and if the Xavier elders hadn’t adamantly refused to let the mistress into the family, perhaps the mistress would be the one in charge today.
Mr. Xavier later died of illness, and the mistress he kept outside the family never had a child with him.
But ever since then, it was as if Helen Sawyer had become a completely different person; her temperament changed drastically.
"Grandma, I’m sorry. I didn’t handle things properly."
Kaden Xavier lowered his eyes, appearing to be genuinely reflecting on his actions.
Beside him, Seraphina Sutton’s face was pale, Old Madam Xavier’s repeated warnings ringing in her ears.
"Miss Sutton," Old Madam Xavier began, "I believe I’ve spoken to you about this multiple times. I even sent Auntie May to look after you until you give birth. But you have some real tricks up your sleeve, managing to evade Auntie May and get close to Kaden."
"Grandma, I didn’t..."
"Who are you calling Grandma!" Old Madam Xavier snapped, completely ignoring Seraphina Sutton’s pitiful act. "Do you really think I’m old and senile, unable to see through your little schemes?"
"The position of Mrs. Xavier will only ever belong to Wren. You know full well whose baby is in your belly. Asher was a good boy. If he knew that after he died, his wife and child ended up with someone else, he wouldn’t be able to rest in peace!"
The news spread like wildfire, and everyone stared at Wren Wynter and Old Madam Xavier in disbelief.
No one could have imagined that the real Mrs. Xavier was the quiet and unassuming Wren Wynter.
"At the last get-together, Dr. Wynter did say her husband was also a captain with the surname Xavier. Thinking about it now, I think there’s only one captain in our company with that last name."
Everyone’s gazes simultaneously fell on Kaden Xavier.
A captain with the surname Xavier—who else could it be but Kaden Xavier?
So this beautiful and capable Dr. Wynter was Captain Xavier’s wife all along.
The two senior executives were even sweating profusely, their minds racing to recall if they had offended this Mrs. Xavier in any way just now.
"Grand... Old Madam, I’m just worried about the baby. This is Asher’s only child, I..."
"Then you should be staying home and focusing on your pregnancy. Although this child is not part of the Xavier Family, for the sake of Asher saving Kaden’s life, we will do our best to accommodate your needs, as long as they are not too excessive."
Old Madam Xavier’s gaze swept over Seraphina Sutton’s stomach as she spoke sternly.
"Miss Sutton, one must learn to be content with what one has. You cannot force what is not yours."
