Godfire: The Split Soul
Chapter 197: Wings of the Dead
The organized barracks was now a river of panic when Kai, Cassy, the chubby lady and her kids reached the reinforced buildings.
"Bring the kids!" Two soldiers standing at the front of the building screamed and stretched their arms.
The chubby lady looked at Kai then shifted her gaze to the kids. She crouched down and wiped the tears from their eyes, then kissed their cheeks. "Everything will be alright, okay."
She wrapped her hands under the little girl's arms then shoved her to the soldier.
"Mommy," the girl screamed as she was being passed from one soldier to another. "I want my mommy."
When the chubby lady raised the little boy, tears dropped from the boy's eyes when he was being carried by the soldier, but he didn't scream. He just kept on shifting glances from one person to another.
"What about their mother?" Kai asked, staring at the soldier.
"We are only taking the kids, the parents would be taken care of later."
"What do you mean they would be taken care of later? What if they die?"
"That's not our concern. We are tasked to take the kids and protect them. They are the ones to protect, not the parents."
Before Kai could ask another question, a Wingreaper dived toward them from the left. Kai pushed Cassy sideways when he felt the wind clawing at his ear.
The speed of the Wingreaper sent the soldier stumbling backward while the chubby lady got carried by the creature.
"Hell no!" Kai screamed as he spun and drove his elbow into the creature's neck as it tried pulling the chubby lady upward, gripping her under its claws.
The impact from Kai sent the creature and the lady spiraling and crashing into a supply tent.
Cassy looked at Kai with wide eyes, then back at the smoking tent. "You didn't even draw your sword."
When she looked at the tent again, she stumbled two steps back as the Wingreaper stood up and shook its fur.
Kai dashed toward it but faltered when he saw the chubby lady screaming for help while one of her legs had been pierced by the broken poles of the tent.
"Fuck!" Kai cursed, then neglected the chance of killing the creature and moved toward the lady's direction.
The Wingreaper roared at Kai while it flapped its wings slowly. Just as Kai turned an angry expression at it, it flew into the sky and joined the hive rolling below the dark clouds.
"Are you okay?" Kai asked when he focused fully on the lady, watching the blood gushing out of her right leg. "Let me help you."
He broke the pole then set the lady's leg free.
"Damn! I will never be able to walk again." The lady screamed in a heartfelt cry then grabbed Kai's arms tightly.
Kai held one of the lady's arms and aided her toward the reinforced building but froze when he saw the door locked.
"Hey, open up." Kai screamed then banged on the six-inch metal door as if his sheer strength could break it open. "She needs immediate medical attention. Open up now!"
Cassy walked from the left side and placed a hand on Kai's right shoulder. "I don't think they would open it. It's better we find Jinx and Black. Maybe they could help."
"These weak soldiers have the guts to lock the door while a volunteer needs immediate medical attention. Fuck!" Kai shoved himself from Cassy's grip, then slammed his clenched fist on the door. Yet not a single soul spoke in response.
All he could hear were the sounds of footsteps drawing away from the other side of the door and the cries of kids that had been taken.
While Kai stood at the door panting, Cassy shoved her arms under the chubby lady and began walking toward the eastern courtyard, where the hospital was.
When Kai followed and vanished from the reinforced building, he saw Tessa sitting inside a black BMW while two of the men in black suits sat at the front, driving her through the chaos.
Tessa focused on him until the vehicle drove out of the Redbull Barracks gate and vanished into the smoky streets of the central city.
Countless Wingreapers crossed their path but Kai pulled out the silver sword from his back and sliced them in perfect halves.
Some tried clawing at Kai's face, but he chopped off the creatures' legs before they could even reach him.
When he got stranded after two had grabbed his arms and were stretching his body, almost tearing him apart, Kai loosened his grip on the sword and used his sheer force to pull the creature closer.
He grabbed the skin of one's wings and tore it clean, then swung it against the other when it had lost its flying power.
"Next time try something nice. This is weak." Kai said and spat blood out of his mouth, then rushed forward, following the direction he had made Cassy and the chubby lady taken.
After a short while, Kai lowered his guard when he saw Jinx and Black also approaching from a distance.
"Are you okay, Cassy?" Jinx asked when she closed in with Cassy, then breathed sharply the moment she saw the chubby lady with a wounded leg. "She needs immediate medical attention now."
Just as Kai reached them, Jinx threw herself on him and gave him a tight hug. "I thought you were dead."
"Thought I was dead? How can someone like me possibly be dead, huh." Kai said low in his head while his bones continuously screamed under the hug.
"Jinx, Jinx, Jinx?" Black called and tapped on Jinx's shoulder three times while his eyes widened. "We've got to go now."
"Why? Let me embrace Kai for a bit longer." Jinx neglected Black's call, but froze when she followed Black's finger.
At a distance from them, all the humans that had died at the Wingreapers' hands began waking up and turning into zombies.
For a second, Jinx's mind blacked out as the memory of Bion City flashed into her head. The day countless soldiers turned into zombies.
