He Proposed to His First Love, So I Married His Archenemy
Chapter 128: The Family Reconciles
Yvonne Sutton sighed softly and turned to walk outside.
After leaving the hospital, she went straight to the Rhodes family’s old residence.
Mr. Rhodes was at home recuperating. When he saw her, he couldn’t hold back and quickly turned his head to wipe away a tear.
"Dad, I brought Wyatt Shaw back," she said.
"Him? Hmph. Didn’t he want to sever ties with me? What is he doing back here?" Mr. Rhodes was still being stubborn.
Yvonne Sutton saw a photo album lying open on Mr. Rhodes’ lap. It was filled with pictures of Wyatt Shaw as a child.
She smiled, walked over, and glanced at the album.
Mr. Rhodes awkwardly tried to close it, but she quickly pointed to a photo of Wyatt with teary eyes looking at the camera and asked, "Why was he crying?"
Looking at the photo, Mr. Rhodes couldn’t help but laugh. "That day, his mother bought him a panda-shaped cake. See, it’s right there on the table. He didn’t want to eat it, so I teased him and bit off the panda’s ear. That’s when he started crying."
Recalling the memory, Mr. Rhodes couldn’t stop laughing.
"But look at my son—he’s handsome even when he cries. When we sent him to kindergarten, all the kids, boys and girls, loved to cling to him. One little boy even kissed his cheek, which made him furious. To intimidate the other kids, he started learning to box. After showing off a set of moves in class, none of the children dared to cling to him anymore."
"Was he mischievous as a child?"
"He was very well-behaved. So much so that I worried he was too obedient and would get bullied. He was a good student, listened to his parents and teachers, and always helped others. It wasn’t until middle school that he suddenly said he wanted to learn the violin and pursue a career in music. I was furious and smashed his violin. Later, I reflected on it. It was probably because Wyatt had always been so obedient that I got used to him doing everything I said. I was accustomed to giving him orders. So when he suddenly went against my wishes, I found it unacceptable and even resorted to violence. That was the incident that sparked his rebellious side. It led to him running away from home, and his personality became more and more defiant and volatile, until we reached a point where we couldn’t communicate at all as father and son."
"After his car accident, I didn’t tell his mother. I flew to Country M overnight. When I found out what he had done, I was furious. I wanted to teach him a lesson, so I said I was disowning him. How... how could I have done that to him, when he needed his family the most? The truth is, I’ve always regretted it, but I couldn’t swallow my pride. I couldn’t even bring myself to say ’I’m sorry’."
Just then, the study door pushed open, and Wyatt Shaw stood outside, his eyes red.
Mr. Rhodes froze for a moment, then hastily wiped his tears. "You... why are you back? You still have the nerve to come back..."
"Dad, I’m sorry," Wyatt Shaw said, cutting Mr. Rhodes off.
With those words, Mr. Rhodes broke down.
"Son, it’s Dad who’s sorry. I should have been there for you."
By the time Yvonne Sutton left the room, the father and son were already embracing.
For the past six months, Wyatt Shaw had forced himself to confront and accept his past. The process must have been incredibly difficult, but the good thing was, he wasn’t alone.
Wyatt Shaw had come back to get some things; he was going to stay with Mrs. Rhodes at the hospital tonight.
"I’ll just sleep at the old residence tonight and keep Dad company," Yvonne Sutton said.
Wyatt Shaw hugged her. "Thank you."
Yvonne Sutton gave him a light punch. "You’re telling *me* thank you?"
Wyatt Shaw lowered his head and kissed her. "If not with thanks, then how about I repay you with my good looks from now on?"
"Shut up and get going!"
That evening, Yvonne Sutton had dinner with Mr. Rhodes, and they went for a walk afterward. Having reconciled with his son, Mr. Rhodes was in high spirits. His health seemed to improve instantly, and he even insisted on walking for an extra half hour.
She slept at the old residence that night. The next morning, she went to the hospital to relieve Wyatt Shaw, who had to go to the company to rescue Silas Rhodes. Yvonne spent the day talking with Mrs. Rhodes, and that evening, Mrs. Rhodes told her to go home and rest.
"I don’t need anyone to stay with me here. Call Wyatt Shaw in a bit and tell him to go home and rest too."
"Okay. But call me if you need anything."
"Alright, go on."
Coming out of the inpatient building, she ran into Mina Adler.
The two hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Mina Adler excitedly hugged her.
"Yvonne, I missed you to death these days you’ve been gone."
Yvonne Sutton patted Mina Adler on the back and asked how she had been.
"Same old, same old. Go to work, get off work, go home and listen to my parents nag."
"Haven’t found a boyfriend?"
"All the good men in this world are extinct. I’ve decided to stay single."
’Why does that sound so familiar? I think David Sutton says that all the time.’
"Uh, what are your standards for a boyfriend? I can keep an eye out for you."
"He has to be tall, strong, and have a beard."
"Huh?"
Mina Adler sighed. "It’s a lesson I learned from my last boyfriend. He was short and skinny, with even fairer skin than me. One time, we were out shopping, and I got knocked over by a middle-aged man. Not only did the guy not apologize, but he also cursed at me. I immediately got up and started arguing back. When the man looked like he was about to get physical, I thought, ’Hey, I’m not alone,’ and went to get my boyfriend. And guess what?"
"He didn’t dare to stand up for you?"
"He ran away!"
Mina Adler was still fuming as she recalled the incident. "I ended up getting into a fight with the middle-aged guy. It was a draw, and then we both got taken to the police station."
"Hey, was that the time I had to come bail you out of the station?"
"That’s the one. I was too embarrassed to tell you the details."
Tall, strong, and bearded—what Mina Adler really wanted was a reliable man who could protect her and stand up for her when it mattered.
’David Sutton would be a perfect fit!’
"Mina, are you free this Saturday?"
"Why?"
"I’m taking you on a blind date."
After leaving the hospital, Yvonne Sutton went straight back to the villa.
She took the subway back, and there was still a bit of a walk from the station to the villa’s entrance. When she reached the fork in the road, she remembered the incident with the old woman and couldn’t help but quicken her pace.
Arriving at the villa’s entrance, the security guard greeted her.
"Miss Sutton, we haven’t seen you and Mr. Shaw around lately. I thought you might have moved out."
"We went on a trip."
"Oh, that’s wonderful."
Thanks to Wyatt Shaw, she had gotten to know all the security guards and gatekeepers in the villa community.
As she walked in, she casually glanced back, and what she saw made her freeze on the spot.
A woman was standing under a streetlight across the road. She wore a white sweatshirt, a leather skirt, and high heels. Her hair was down, and she seemed to be looking right at her.
And this person looked exactly like Hannah Abbott...
The resemblance was uncanny.
"Miss Sutton, what are you looking at?" the security guard asked.
Yvonne Sutton took a deep breath and asked the guard in a low voice, "You can see that person under the streetlight over there, right?"
The moment she asked, Yvonne Sutton regretted it. ’What am I thinking?’
The security guard immediately looked over, staring for a moment. "Is someone there? I don’t see anyone."
Yvonne Sutton’s heart leaped into her throat, and she held her breath.
