He Proposed to His First Love, So I Married His Archenemy
Chapter 155: Smug and Arrogant
The moment Daisy Shaw saw Wyatt Shaw, a wave of fury washed over her.
"Yesterday, as soon as I saw Candice Yates arrive, I went and asked the director. He said she wasn’t on the original guest list. It was Wyatt Shaw who called and forced them to add her."
As she spoke, she rolled up her sleeves, looking as if she was ready to punch Wyatt at any moment.
Wyatt Shaw, however, didn’t look at her. His eyes were fixed on Yvonne Sutton, his gaze deep and complex, as if he wanted to say something.
"Wyatt!"
Hearing the call, Wyatt stopped dead in his tracks, as if a rope had been yanked tight around him. He glanced at Yvonne one more time before lowering his gaze and turning away.
Candice Yates happily ran over, and when she reached him, she hugged his arm and whined coquettishly, "Why didn’t you wait for me?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Wyatt Shaw wore a doting expression. "I’m just going to talk to the director, then we should head back."
"No way. You have to stay and keep me company for a couple more days!"
"I still have work."
"Is that work more important than me?"
"Of course not."
"Then stay here with me. I don’t know any of these people. What if they bully me?"
Hearing this, Daisy Shaw simply couldn’t take it anymore.
"Who’s bullying you? Who are you pointing fingers at with that remark?"
Candice Yates pretended she had only just noticed Daisy Shaw and quickly trotted forward. "Good morning, Ma’am. I’m just a newcomer and have never been on a variety show before. I’ll be counting on you to show me the ropes for the next few days."
"What’s this ’Ma’am’? We’re not close."
"Ah, did Wyatt not tell you? I’m his girlfriend. Oh, that’s right, we’re planning to get married at the end of the year."
"I haven’t agreed to it."
"Er, you might not know, but you don’t need parental consent to get married these days. A couple can just take their IDs and register. It’s as if marriage is a matter for two people, not their parents."
"You..."
Just as Daisy Shaw started to speak, Candice turned to Wyatt. "Wyatt, I left my sun hat in the room. Could you go get it for me? The sun is pretty strong today, and I don’t want to get a tan."
At that moment, Wyatt Shaw was like a puppet. Whatever Candice said, he did. He immediately turned and went back to get her sun hat.
Seeing her son being so obedient, Daisy Shaw said angrily, "In any case, I will never allow you to set foot in the Rhodes family’s home!"
Hearing this, Candice Yates covered her mouth and laughed.
She glanced at Yvonne Sutton. "You’re really quite ridiculous, you know? Ignoring your future daughter-in-law to get chummy with your former one. Of course, you’re old and muddled, so I can understand. But some people are just so thick-skinned. They don’t know their own status, their own place, or where they’re supposed to stand. They just have to hang around here, being an eyesore."
Yvonne Sutton took a deep breath. "I’m Mr. Shaw’s agent. If I’m such an eyesore to you, then I suggest you stay far away from us."
"Ha, an agent." Candice covered her mouth and laughed. "As if I don’t know what she’s up to. She’s just trying to get you two back together. And you... if you weren’t thinking the same thing, you wouldn’t have been so shameless as to come here. But Wyatt is with me now. One of you is a disgrace to her age, and the other is just plain shameless. How amusing."
"You... what did you just call me?" Daisy Shaw’s face darkened with rage.
"I suppose I’ll go back to calling you Ma’am. I’m respecting you, so you’d better respect me. In any case, Wyatt and I are definitely getting married. If you won’t let me into the Rhodes family home, then fine, I won’t enter. It’s not like you have much longer to live, anyway. Once you’re dead, won’t everything the Rhodes family has belong to me?"
"Candice Yates, don’t you go too far!" Yvonne Sutton yelled furiously.
"I can go even further!" Candice stepped forward and shoved Yvonne hard. Yvonne, not expecting her to get physical, staggered back a step.
Yvonne was still in shock when, in the next instant, someone from behind grabbed a handful of Candice’s hair, yanked it hard, and threw her aside.
Candice yelped in pain several times, tears welling in her eyes. She looked up to see her attacker standing with hands on hips, looking every bit the spitfire.
"You... who are you?"
"A little nobody like you gets to ask who I am?"
"You!"
"’You’ what? These two have their status and reputation to consider, so they won’t stoop to your level. But me? I don’t have any of that to worry about. If you act so high and mighty in front of them again, I’ll rip your face off!"
The one who said this was Megan Hughes. In that moment, both Daisy Shaw and Yvonne Sutton looked at her with gazes full of adoration.
Candice Yates had indeed been so daring because she was counting on Daisy Shaw and Yvonne Sutton not wanting to lose face by bickering with her. She never expected someone who wasn’t afraid of losing face, or even of being shamed, to confront her head-on.
Faced with Megan Hughes, her arrogance instantly deflated.
Just then, Wyatt Shaw returned, and Candice ran over to him, her eyes red.
"Wyatt, your mother said she’ll only ever accept Miss Sutton as her daughter-in-law, not me."
"Mom!" Wyatt looked at Daisy Shaw helplessly. "Yvonne and I are already divorced. You’re making things very difficult for me."
"When did I ever say that?" Daisy Shaw’s face was dark with anger. "What I *will* say is that I want to adopt Yvonne as my goddaughter! As for daughter-in-law, forget it. I wouldn’t want her to be ruined by you!"
Wyatt Shaw narrowed his eyes but didn’t say anything.
The last guest arrived. Candice said it was a junior from her agency and pulled Wyatt over to say hello.
Daisy Shaw was so angry she kept patting her chest. "I raised this son for nothing, for nothing!"
Yvonne Sutton tried to console Daisy, saying that Wyatt was still a very devoted son to her.
"You two pushovers, you deserve to be walked all over!" Megan Hughes said, looking at them with disdain.
Daisy Shaw, moved, stepped forward and hugged Megan Hughes. "I knew it. You always have my back."
"Go on, get off me. Who said I was protecting you?"
"Ingrid, you were so cool just now."
"And you’re just as useless as ever."
"Hey, but I had you back then! You’d help me deal with all the riffraff."
"So for all these years, whenever you ran into trash like that, you just let them walk all over you?"
"That’s not entirely true. After all, I’m a Triple Crown Best Actress and Mrs. Rhodes. No one dares to act wild in front of me."
"Ooh, listen to you, so high and mighty. ’Triple Crown Best Actress,’ ’Mrs. Rhodes’... to put it bluntly, you just have a pretty face!"
"You’re just jealous! What right do you have to question my skills!"
"What skills? Crying on cue, your face contorting whenever you shout, and your lines coming out breathless and weak?"
"And what about you? If you had any real skills, you wouldn’t be this old and have accomplished absolutely nothing!"
"How dare you question me!"
"I am questioning you! What are you gonna do about it?"
They were friendly for a moment before they started bickering again. Yvonne Sutton just stared at them, dumbfounded, still not over the touching scene from moments before.
Filming had already begun, and the camera captured their entire argument.
The variety show was called *Spring Rain and Autumn Fruit*. The premise was that the main character, Mr. Miller, and his family had worked hard all year and were about to harvest their fruit in the fall. However, Mr. Miller fell gravely ill and had to be hospitalized. This left only an old woman and a ten-year-old boy in the Miller family, unable to harvest and sell the ripe apples.
Using this as a starting point, the show invited four pairs of guests—be they couples, old friends, or colleagues—all of whom were facing interpersonal challenges. By working together and completing tasks, they were meant to find better ways to get along.
Once they were up on the mountain, the production team began filming in earnest. Yvonne Sutton’s head was still hurting, so she found a quiet spot to rest. But someone just wouldn’t leave her in peace, smugly planting herself right in front of her.
"Do you know why Wyatt Shaw has suddenly started being so good to me?"
