He Proposed to His First Love, So I Married His Archenemy
Chapter 98: The Ring Was Prepared for Hannah Abbott
Yvonne Sutton gave the actress, Cindy Jacobs, some emergency first aid, but the wound was quite deep and in an awkward spot, so she still needed to go to the hospital.
Not a single person from the production crew came over to check on the situation. Yvonne Sutton had no choice but to call for Ms. Young and ask her to arrange for the actress to leave the island and go to the hospital.
"Mrs. Shaw, thank you. I’m sorry I didn’t speak up for you earlier." The actress’s face was filled with shame.
Yvonne Sutton knew that as a minor actress, she had no real say on set.
"I don’t blame you, but I hope that if you encounter something like this again, you’ll find the courage to stand up. Don’t let the people who try to help feel like their efforts were wasted."
After seeing Cindy Jacobs off, the sky had nearly turned dark.
Claire Lawrence insisted on staying the night with her and even moved her luggage over.
The production crew was given boxed meals, but naturally, Yvonne Sutton didn’t have to eat one. Ms. Young had the kitchen prepare an exquisite dinner just for her.
Yvonne herself was fine, but Claire Lawrence was wolfing down her food.
"The boxed meals we get are made and packaged by a restaurant on the mainland, then shipped over by boat. By the time we get them, they’re already cold. Not only are they cold, they’re incredibly greasy, and don’t even get me started on the taste. I’ve been eating this for days. Now, the mere sight of a boxed meal makes me want to throw up."
Claire Lawrence took a few spoonfuls of the seafood congee and gave a satisfied thumbs-up.
Yvonne Sutton placed a piece of braised pork rib on her plate, telling her to eat more slowly.
"Yvonne, I’m so glad you’re here," Claire Lawrence said, touched.
Yvonne Sutton smiled. "From now on, if there’s anything you want to eat, just tell Ms. Young."
After dinner, Claire Lawrence pulled her onto the bed to talk. When the conversation turned to what had happened before, Claire was much more composed.
"That night left a scar on my heart. The scar is still an eyesore, but it doesn’t hurt anymore. As long as I don’t stare right at it, I can ignore it. You can’t be foolish and torture yourself. You have to look forward and find your own happiness."
Yvonne Sutton squeezed Claire Lawrence’s hand. "If you ever get tired, you can lean on me."
Claire Lawrence laughed and hugged Yvonne Sutton. "Why do you smell so good?"
"Stop being a pervert."
"Hehe, Wyatt Shaw sure is lucky."
"Get back on your side of the bed."
"Yvonne Sutton, that’s just mean! You let Wyatt Shaw hug you but not me."
"He’s just as annoying as you are."
"Hmph, playing tough, are we? I bet you’re already starting to miss your husband."
Claire Lawrence had been filming all day and was completely exhausted. They only chatted for a little while before she fell fast asleep. Yvonne Sutton closed her eyes and tossed and turned for a long time, but sleep just wouldn’t come.
Afraid she might wake Claire Lawrence, she got up, put on a down jacket, and went outside.
The moment she opened the door, the sound of the ocean waves rushed in, as if the sea was already lapping at her feet. She took a deep breath. The crisp sea breeze was refreshing, invigorating her senses.
She pulled her jacket tighter around herself and followed a small path down to the shore, strolling along the beach.
She had to admit it: she couldn’t sleep because she missed Wyatt Shaw.
Before dinner, she had tried to call him, but it didn’t connect. She took out her phone and tried again now, but his was still off.
She couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing right now. ’Is he missing me as much as I miss him?’
In the distance, a light on the shore was blinking. It reminded her of the blue-and-white house, and of the romantic proposal he’d made over the phone.
’But why is the light on?’
’Who turned it on?’
Yvonne Sutton frowned and walked toward the house. She went up the steps and followed a wooded path lined with string lights until she reached the blue-and-white house, where she saw the back of a man. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
He stood there in a black overcoat, his hands in his pockets, gazing into the distance.
’Wyatt Shaw!’
A look of joy spread across Yvonne Sutton’s face, and she hurried up the steps. But just then, she saw a young woman emerge from the hollow of a tree.
The woman had a neat crop of short, blond hair and was wearing a black jacket, holding an iron box in her hands. When she saw Wyatt Shaw, her eyes lit up, and she ran toward him.
"Is this your secret hideout?"
"Did you put up these string lights?"
"And this box... can I open it and see what’s inside?"
Candice Yates smiled playfully, looking at Wyatt Shaw with anticipation.
Yvonne Sutton couldn’t see Wyatt Shaw’s face, only his back. He was perfectly still, as if frozen to the spot.
"Why aren’t you saying anything?"
"I’m Candice Yates. What’s your name?"
"It’s so cold out here. Can I go inside your little house for a bit?"
Yvonne Sutton narrowed her eyes. She didn’t know why Candice Yates was here, but she suspected it was no coincidence.
"Darling?" Yvonne Sutton called out.
Her voice snapped Wyatt Shaw out of his trance. He turned to look at her, his dazed eyes suddenly clearing.
He turned and strode toward her, pulling her into a tight embrace the moment he reached her.
"I came home from the office and you weren’t there. It was terrifying."
Yvonne Sutton laughed. "What were you so afraid of?"
"I don’t know. But every second was an agony."
"I missed you too," she said.
Hearing her say that, Wyatt Shaw kissed her passionately, his breathing heavy and hot.
Yvonne Sutton quickly pinched his waist. As he flinched in pain, she peeked past him.
Only then did Wyatt Shaw seem to remember the other person. He turned around to look at her, his gaze darkening as he asked, "Who are you? Why are you here? Don’t you know it’s rude to take someone’s things without their permission?"
Candice Yates pressed her lips together, set down the box, and then turned and ran off.
Wyatt Shaw muttered to himself, "She looks a little familiar."
But he didn’t dwell on it, instead pulling Yvonne Sutton over to the iron box.
"This box is all rusted," he said.
Yvonne Sutton stared at the iron box, her heart sinking.
Her ring had come from this very box. He had told her it was for his future wife. At the time, she had assumed his ’future wife’ didn’t refer to any specific person, so when she received the ring, it became hers.
’But now she saw it differently. He had simply forgotten. He’d forgotten that the fiancée he’d spoken of was actually Hannah Abbott. This ring... he had prepared it to propose to Hannah Abbott.’
"What’s wrong?" Wyatt Shaw asked, noticing her expression had darkened.
Yvonne Sutton shivered slightly. "It’s just a little cold."
Wyatt Shaw placed the iron box back in the tree hollow, then wrapped his arm around her and led her to the small house.
"I remember leaving the key here," he said, fumbling inside a cavity in the wall next to the door.
Yvonne Sutton looked at the house, suddenly feeling as if it were a Pandora’s box, filled with secrets. Once opened, they would all come spilling out.
’His past with Hannah Abbott... do I really want to know?’
"Stop looking," Yvonne Sutton said suddenly.
Wyatt Shaw turned back to look at her. "What’s wrong?"
"I want... I want to go back to the villa. It’s warmer there."
Wyatt Shaw seemed slightly taken aback for a moment, then nodded. "Okay."
Wyatt Shaw took her hand and, finding it even colder than before, tucked it into his own pocket.
Yvonne Sutton leaned against Wyatt Shaw’s shoulder as he held her close, and they walked back toward the villa together.
"It looks like they’re still filming a night scene at the villa," she said.
"I saw that when I was over there earlier," Wyatt Shaw said.
"You were over there earlier?" She had assumed he’d come straight here after arriving on the island.
"Yeah. I went to look for you, but you weren’t there."
"I had gone back to rest."
"Jean Bell told me you were here, so I came to find you."
Yvonne Sutton froze. "Jean Bell told you I was here?"
