The thing behind the neural core door breathed like a living storm.

Hot air rolled through the chamber carrying the scent of wet earth and decay while red light pulsed from the darkness beyond. The entire underground facility trembled around Maya as fungal tendrils spread across the walls like wildfire.

Selena hung suspended against the ceiling, barely conscious beneath twisting black growth wrapped around her body.

“Mmmph—!”

The tendrils covering her mouth tightened harder.

Ethan stood between Maya and the doorway.
