Chapter 2317: Story 2318: The Choice Beneath the Earth
The smile beneath the chamber was not human.
The colossal eye staring up through the cracked earth radiated something far older than emotion—an intelligence so ancient it no longer understood fear, hatred, or mercy the way humanity did.
Only hunger.
Only connection.
Maya stood frozen before the neural core while the underground world trembled around her.
THOOM.
THOOM.
The massive organic heart suspended in the cavern pulsed brighter with every second. Human bodies floating inside it drifted slowly beneath translucent membranes, their eyes closed peacefully as fungal roots threaded through flesh and bone.
Dreaming forever.
Ethan screamed again.
Black tendrils tightened through his body, lifting him higher before the core itself. His spine bent unnaturally as more fungal growth spread across his face.
“Maya!” he gasped.
The human part of him was disappearing.
Fast.
Selena finally tore herself free from the ceiling tendrils and crashed hard onto the chamber floor. Blood covered one side of her face as she stumbled toward Maya desperately.
“You have to overload the core now!”
The ancient voice entered Maya’s thoughts again.
They are not suffering here.
Images flooded her mind instantly.
The connected humans inside the Root felt no pain.
No fear.
No loneliness.
Their minds existed together inside a vast endless consciousness beneath the earth.
A terrible peace.
Maya nearly broke beneath the weight of it.
Then she heard another sound.
Crying.
A child’s voice somewhere deep within the neural core.
Maya looked closer at the floating bodies inside the translucent chamber.
Children were inside it too.
Families.
Entire generations absorbed into the organism.
Not preserved.
Consumed.
Her horror returned instantly.
“You’re stealing them,” Maya whispered.
The Deep Signal answered calmly.
We are saving them from extinction.
Suddenly the cavern ceiling exploded above them.
A gigantic black tendril crashed downward through falling stone while the ancient creature beneath the earth forced itself closer to the surface.
The chamber shook violently.
And through the smoke—
The Shepherd emerged.
Its massive fungal-covered body staggered into the core chamber bleeding heavily from dozens of wounds. Entire chunks of fungal armor had been ripped away, exposing twisted human flesh beneath.
Yet it still moved forward.
Still fighting.
Every white eye in the chamber turned toward it.
The Shepherd looked directly at Maya.
“Choose now,” it growled.
Behind the creature, swarms of mutated Harvesters poured through the collapsing tunnels. These were no longer human-looking.
The Deep Signal had changed them completely.
Towering bodies made of fused limbs and fungal bone crawled across the walls surrounding the core.
Selena raised the rifle shakily.
“We can’t hold them.”
Maya looked toward the overload switch embedded near the base of the neural core. Red warning lights blinked across the ancient BLACKTHORN machinery surrounding it.
One pull.
That was all.
The Deep Signal spoke softly inside her mind.
Destroy us... and humanity dies screaming above.
Visions struck her again.
Cities burning.
Military barricades collapsing.
Millions already infected.
Even if the core died—
The surface world might already be lost.
Then Ethan looked at her through tears and black fungal veins.
And smiled weakly. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
The real Ethan.
Still alive beneath the horror.
“You once asked me why I stayed behind for Lucas,” he whispered painfully.
Black tendrils tightened around his throat.
“Because...” He coughed violently. “...somebody has to choose who survives.”
Maya’s hands trembled.
The overload switch waited.
The Shepherd roared as mutated creatures slammed into it from all sides.
Selena screamed for Maya to hurry.
The colossal eye beneath the earth widened fully.
And the ancient voice whispered one final promise directly into Maya’s soul.
Become the bridge... and no human being will ever suffer alone again.
