I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 132: She Can’t Afford to Wait
Wyatt Yates translated her signs exactly.
Attorney Miller immediately said, "Rest assured, there’s no such thing as a divorce you can’t get."
Noelle Sutton had just breathed a sigh of relief when Attorney Miller added, "However, if your husband hasn’t engaged in those specific behaviors, the process will take a bit longer."
"How long?"
As soon as Noelle finished signing, Wyatt Yates voiced the question for her.
"Six months at the earliest, but it could take as long as a year or two."
The light in Noelle’s eyes instantly dimmed.
’She didn’t have time. She couldn’t afford to wait.’
’If the fastest it could be is six months, then she might as well not bother divorcing at all and just wait for death to automatically dissolve the marriage contract.’
Seeing her reaction, Wyatt Yates said in a low voice, "She needs this divorce to be finalized as soon as possible, or she wouldn’t be going to all this trouble. Isn’t there any other way?"
Attorney Miller mulled it over for a moment before saying slowly, "Miss Sutton, you mentioned an emotional affair earlier. If your husband doesn’t meet the other criteria, then our only option is to gather evidence of that affair. We can use it to prove the marriage has irretrievably broken down and file for divorce. If the evidence is conclusive, the divorce can be granted after just one filing."
’Noelle hadn’t originally planned on bringing Tristan Lawson and Sophie Hughes’s relationship out into the open. But if she wanted to win the case, she truly had no other choice.’
’The gifts Tristan Lawson gave Sophie Hughes could be explained away as presents between relatives. But he brought Sophie to act as Joshua Lawson’s mother. In the school’s parent group chat, when others mistook Sophie’s identity, Tristan never bothered to correct them.’
’Even the school security guards thought Sophie Hughes was Mrs. Lawson.’
’All of this was evidence that could prove Tristan Lawson was having an emotional affair.’
’It would be even easier if she had proof of a physical affair.’
’Back in Cygnus, Tristan and Sophie seemed to have stayed in the same hotel.’
’She remembered the dates. She could request an investigation into that, too.’
She felt incredibly embarrassed saying these things in front of so many people.
’But Tristan Lawson had treated her this way, had forced her hand.’
’He was shameless enough to be that intimate with Sophie Hughes. If he didn’t care about his reputation, why should she care about hers?’
Noelle signed decisively, "Then let’s file the lawsuit on grounds of infidelity."
Noelle proceeded to tell the lawyer everything she had recently discovered.
For instance, there was the piece of paper she’d found at home, covered in Tristan Lawson’s handwriting repeating Sophie Hughes’s name.
The paper was gone now, but the moment she’d found it, she had decided on a divorce and had taken a picture.
Then, there was the parent-child event at school.
And what happened in Crestfall.
And Joshua Lawson telling a nurse that Sophie Hughes was his mother, while she was just the family’s nanny.
And so on.
Furthermore, throughout their seven-year marriage, Tristan had always made her hide whenever they had guests or at any public functions.
Each time, he would transfer two million to her account as compensation.
That, she reasoned, should count as a form of emotional abuse.
Wyatt Yates stared at Noelle’s hands as she signed. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
’If not for a situation like today’s, The Little Mute probably would have never spoken up about any of this.’
’He knew The Little Mute had suffered in this marriage, but he never realized just how much she had endured!’
’No wonder. The first day they were reunited, when The Little Mute saw Tristan Lawson and Sophie Hughes on that big screen, her expression had been so utterly shattered.’
A sharp pain seized Wyatt Yates’s heart!
’Tristan Lawson was clearly taking advantage of her muteness, of her kindness.’
Wyatt Yates shot to his feet. Fists clenched and face contorted with rage, he stormed out without translating what Noelle had just signed.
Noelle couldn’t call out his name, unable to stop him as he left.
She hurried out after him, but Wyatt was already long gone.
Hugo Sterling was completely bewildered. He couldn’t understand sign language, so he had no idea what Noelle had said that set Wyatt off.
Unable to stop Wyatt, Noelle rushed back inside, yanked her phone off the charger, dialed his number and hung up, then fired off several texts in quick succession.
"Why did you just leave like that?"
"Are you going to find Tristan Lawson?"
"Don’t you dare go!"
"Wyatt Yates?! I’ll be furious if you go!"
’She didn’t want Wyatt getting into a fight with Tristan Lawson. She could get her divorce through legal channels; she really didn’t want Wyatt to get into trouble over her.’
Hugo Sterling hurried over to Noelle. "Noelle, what’s going on? What did you just sign?"
Noelle quickly typed a message on her phone.
"Mr. Sterling, please give me Attorney Miller’s card. I’ll organize the evidence I need tonight and send it to him directly. I have to go find Wyatt. I’m worried he’ll do something rash."
’The cold fury radiating from Wyatt just now was exactly like him when they were teenagers.’
’He used to get into fights just like that every time someone insulted his mother.’
’He was a doctor now, and he seemed so much more composed, reserved, and refined. But clearly, that hadn’t suppressed the volatile temper underneath.’
"I’ll go with you."
Noelle nodded.
Hugo Sterling told Attorney Miller he could leave for the day.
He led Noelle to his car. She kept sending messages to Wyatt, but he didn’t reply once.
Noelle was so anxious her face was scrunched up in distress.
She clutched her phone, alternating between sending texts and calling him.
But Wyatt remained unresponsive.
Seeing how frantic she was, Hugo Sterling pulled the car over.
"Noelle, what is it?"
Noelle typed on her phone for Hugo to read. "Knowing Wyatt’s temper, I’m worried he’s going to fight Tristan Lawson. It won’t do him any good at all. He’s the second son of the Yates Group! The last time Tristan found out Wyatt was helping me find a divorce lawyer, he retaliated against the Yates Group!"
Hugo Sterling pursed his lips. ’It seems the relationship between Noelle and Wyatt is far from ordinary.’
’This Wyatt Yates must be in love with her.’
’It must have been when Noelle signed about Tristan Lawson’s emotional affair that Wyatt was so completely enraged.’
’So, he must have gone to find Tristan Lawson.’
"Noelle, don’t worry. If he’s going after Tristan Lawson, he must be heading to the Lawson headquarters. I’ll take you there now. He hasn’t been gone long. If I speed, we should be able to catch him."
"Thank you."
After leaving the hospital, Tristan Lawson sought out the most skilled jewelry restorer in Glenwater.
Ten severely worn pearls needed to be restored and the strand restrung.
After settling on a restoration plan with the artisan, he returned to the Lawson building.
He was in an absolutely foul mood today.
’Noelle’s audacity was growing by the day.’
’Now she was directly testing his limits.’
When he arrived at the Lawson building, he pulled into his reserved parking space.
Just then, Wyatt Yates’s car screeched to a halt nearby.
On his way over, he had already taken the golf club he usually kept in his trunk and placed it on the passenger seat.
He kicked the door open with one hand, grabbing the golf club with the other as he got out of the car in one fluid motion.
He was about to storm directly into Tristan Lawson’s office and make him pay!
But then he saw Tristan Lawson himself getting out of his car.
Without a second word, Wyatt took long strides and charged straight at Tristan Lawson.
Tristan Lawson closed his car door and looked up, just in time to see the enraged Wyatt Yates bearing down on him, raising the tightly gripped golf club.
