I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 56: Why Are You Looking for a Lawyer?
"Mr. Lawson, we’ve found your wife. She was found unconscious in her hotel room and is receiving emergency medical attention."
"What’s the exact situation?"
Tristan Lawson’s expression was grim and dark.
"We’ll have to wait for the doctors to finish before we know more. Please hurry to Cygnus People’s Hospital."
"I’m already on my way. Thank you."
The driver stopped the car at a roadblock.
"I can’t go any further. This is as far as I can take you."
"Alright."
Tristan Lawson paid the fare, got out of the car, and plunged into the curtain of rain.
The rain was so heavy that he was soaked to the skin in moments.
His clothes clung uncomfortably to his skin.
Water had flooded his shoes.
He simply took off his shoes.
He had never been in such a wretched state.
Wading barefoot through the murky water, the sharp lines of his face were dark and severe, and a deep furrow was etched between his brows.
Still, he pushed forward with difficult steps...
When Noelle Sutton opened her eyes again, her surroundings were bright.
The sounds of the thunderstorm outside had quieted considerably.
She realized she was in a hospital.
Turning her head, she was surprised to see Wyatt Yates.
Noelle Sutton’s gaze trembled slightly.
’Last night, when I was terrified, the person I called for help was Tristan Lawson.’
’But he... he didn’t come.’
An uncontrollable bitterness welled up in Noelle Sutton’s heart.
Wyatt Yates’s eyes were filled with worry, his voice full of concern. "You’re awake? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere? I’ll get a doctor to come take a look."
Noelle Sutton shook her head.
She knew she was just in shock from the terror.
The night her mother jumped to her death, the storm had been just like this, with thunder and lightning.
Her father had locked her in the house alone, and she had suffered through the entire night in agony.
The next day, her grandmother had come to the house, found her unconscious, and taken her to the hospital.
And from that day on, she never spoke again.
She was terrified of thunder and lightning at night, and of the howling sound of strong winds.
Noelle Sutton was still reeling from the shock, in no mood to ask Wyatt Yates how he had found her.
She simply gave Wyatt Yates a deep look, then raised the hand that didn’t have an IV in it. She bent her thumb twice, a gesture of thanks.
She had almost no strength left and gently closed her eyes.
Wyatt Yates didn’t disturb her, sitting quietly by her bedside and watching over her.
Before long, Noelle Sutton fell asleep again.
When she next opened her eyes, the sky was bright. The rain had stopped, and the wind had died down.
Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden glow on the wall.
Everything was quiet.
It was as if last night’s terrifying thunderstorm had never happened.
As Noelle Sutton propped herself up to sit, Wyatt Yates quickly grabbed a pillow and placed it behind her back.
Only then did Noelle Sutton slowly begin to sign, "Why are you here?"
Wyatt Yates paused for a moment.
After he and Noelle Sutton parted ways yesterday afternoon, he hadn’t gone anywhere, instead staying near her home.
Before long, he saw Noelle Sutton leave her house with a suitcase and head to the high-speed rail station.
He had someone look into it and found that Noelle Sutton had bought a high-speed rail ticket to Glenwater and a flight to Cygnus.
So, he drove back to Glenwater and booked a flight to Cygnus as well.
Around eight or nine in the evening, it started to rain. By eleven, the weather had worsened, with fierce winds and a torrential downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning.
He remembered that Noelle Sutton was terrified of thunderstorms, so he started having people search for the hotel where she was staying.
The severe weather caused poor phone reception, and he couldn’t get a call out.
By the time he tried calling Noelle Sutton again, her line was also unreachable.
It wasn’t until the hospital called him that he was able to rush over.
"I’m here on a business trip."
Wyatt Yates didn’t tell her he had followed her because he was worried.
To keep Noelle Sutton from asking more questions, he continued, "Around two or three in the morning, the hospital called me. They said you were out of emergency care and needed someone to look after you. They tried calling your husband’s..."
Wyatt Yates trailed off.
They couldn’t reach Tristan Lawson’s phone, so they called him instead, as his number was in Noelle Sutton’s contacts.
Noelle Sutton lowered her gaze.
Her long lashes cast a shadow on her cheeks.
"The Little Mute, you..." Wyatt Yates still wanted to ask if her marriage was in trouble, but the words died on his lips. He changed the subject, comforting her, "Don’t overthink it. He’s probably busy with work and missed the call. Uh... I’ll go out and get you some breakfast. What would you like to eat?"
Noelle Sutton looked up and signed to Wyatt Yates that she couldn’t eat. She told him not to trouble himself over her and to go back to his hotel to rest.
"You’re sick. How can you not eat? If I didn’t know you were here, that would be one thing, but now that I do, how could I not take care of you?"
Wyatt Yates was getting a little worked up.
Not wanting to worry him further, Noelle Sutton didn’t argue and agreed to let him go buy breakfast.
After Wyatt Yates left, Noelle Sutton pressed the call bell.
When a doctor came, she asked about her condition.
The doctor said it was shock brought on by extreme fright. Luckily, she was brought in promptly, and after some rest, she would be fine to be discharged.
Noelle Sutton then typed a question on her phone for the doctor: Who brought her to the hospital?
"It was the police. During yesterday’s thunderstorm, there were power outages everywhere and severe flooding on the roads. Many officers in the city were out conducting rescues. You were lucky you ran into them."
Noelle Sutton thanked the doctor.
After the doctor left, her hand fell limply to her side.
’At such a critical moment, I actually forgot to call the police.’
’Instead, I sent my call for help to someone who was never going to respond.’
Wyatt Yates returned with breakfast for Noelle Sutton. She ate a little and prepared to be discharged.
Wyatt Yates, still worried, went to check with the hospital again to confirm she could be discharged.
By the time he returned after handling Noelle Sutton’s discharge paperwork, she had already packed her things.
"Are you going to the hotel?"
Noelle Sutton nodded.
"Let’s go. I’ll take you."
Wyatt Yates had already arranged for a car.
Noelle Sutton sat in the passenger seat, idly scrolling through her phone.
She saw a post that had a huge number of likes and shares.
The post read: All of our provincial-exclusive limited edition brooches were just bought up by one handsome, wealthy gentleman! All twenty-three of them! SOBBING... I wonder what lucky girl is going to get this gift. I’m so jealous! That’s what I call a bold and impressive display of love!
The post was accompanied by a picture of an exquisite, diamond-studded, heart-shaped brooch of two swans. A top-quality, teardrop-shaped pearl dangled from the tips of the two swans’ red beaks.
Noelle Sutton swiped to the second picture, and her gaze froze completely.
Although it was just a view of his back, she recognized the man in the photo at a single glance.
’His love is indeed bold, and truly something to show off.’
’It’s just that all of his love was given to someone else.’
Noelle Sutton locked her phone screen and turned to look at Wyatt Yates.
Sensing her looking at him, Wyatt Yates turned to meet Noelle Sutton’s gaze.
Noelle Sutton looked like she had something to say, so he pulled the car over to the side of the road.
Noelle Sutton began to sign to him, "Do you know any good lawyers?"
"A lawyer?" Wyatt Yates’s expression grew serious. "What do you need a lawyer for?"
Noelle Sutton signed one word: "Divorce."
