I Stepped Aside for Her, Now They Beg My Forgiveness Every Night
Chapter 57: What Made You So Anxious?
Wyatt Yates stared blankly at Noelle Sutton.
Her marriage, it seemed, was really in trouble.
Noelle thought Wyatt didn’t believe she wanted a divorce. Her expression was firm as she continued signing, "I’m serious. I really need a lawyer. Please, help me."
Ever since she married Tristan Lawson, she had spent nearly all her time at home and had no social circle of her own.
She knew very few people.
Tristan Lawson had his own legal team, a collection of elite lawyers.
Given his status, it was unlikely an ordinary lawyer would dare to take a case against him.
The Yates Family also seemed powerful, so Noelle thought Wyatt could probably introduce her to some capable lawyers.
After Wyatt returned to the country and learned that Noelle had been married for seven years, he had been filled with regret and sadness.
When he first discovered there might be problems in Noelle and Tristan’s marriage, his initial thought was to hope she would get a divorce.
But when Noelle actually said she wanted a divorce, he couldn’t feel happy at all. Instead, he was more worried about whether she had been treated well over the past seven years.
"The Little Mute, tell me, have you suffered a lot these past seven years?"
His eyes became bloodshot.
Noelle shook her head, her signs sorrowful. "It’s just that there are no feelings left between us. It’s the seven-year itch, and we couldn’t get past it."
She was the one who chose this marriage.
She didn’t want to tell anyone else about the bitter taste it left.
It would only add to the sorrow.
Wyatt didn’t press further.
Noelle’s mother had died young. After her mother’s death, her father sold their marital home and vanished without a trace.
She was raised by her maternal grandmother. Without her parents’ love, she had developed a steady and mature personality from a young age.
Any decision she made was likely the result of careful deliberation.
"Alright. As soon as I find a suitable lawyer, I’ll let you know immediately."
Noelle signed her thanks, then started a new set of signs. "By the way, what do you do for work? Did you take over the family business, or do you have your own career? I haven’t even asked."
"My father owns hospitals. As for me... I became a doctor. Would you believe it?"
Noelle’s eyelids fluttered. She truly found it a little hard to believe.
It was probably because they hadn’t spent much time together since growing up, so her memories of Wyatt were almost entirely from their youth.
It was hard to imagine that the boy who was always getting into fights, their little gang leader, had actually become a doctor.
Wyatt smiled. "I knew you wouldn’t believe it. But... people can change."
’True.’
The Wyatt of today was a completely different person from the boy he used to be.
Since his father owned hospitals, it wasn’t surprising that he would go into medicine.
Noelle began to sign, "That’s wonderful. You’re doing better and better. I’m very happy for you."
Wyatt knew that Noelle had always been kind.
Even though she couldn’t speak, and others bullied or mocked her, she never held a grudge and always wished the best for them, including him.
He used to call her The Little Mute, just like everyone else.
He had even mocked her.
One time, he overheard people gossiping about his mother, but she stepped forward and told them his mother was a very gentle woman.
At that moment, she had been signing so anxiously.
When the others couldn’t understand, she wrote it down with a pen and paper.
After that, he still called her The Little Mute, but he never mocked her again.
He took Noelle back to her hotel.
Noelle had been frightened and fainted the night before. She hadn’t slept long, nor had she slept well.
Back at the hotel, she put her phone on silent.
Her mentor’s exhibition was tomorrow.
She wanted to rest up and be at her best.
「At noon.」
Tristan Lawson’s eyes snapped open, and he immediately sat up in bed.
Sophie Hughes grabbed Tristan’s arm. "Tristan, what are you doing?" she said urgently. "You need to lie down and rest."
Tristan turned his head to look at Sophie, a slight arch in his brow. "Why are you here?"
"I went to the hospital this morning and saw Secretary Shaw with Joshua. He told me you’d come to Cygnus last night. Then, the hospital called me. They said you had collapsed on the road and were found by a rescue team. The flooding was terrible last night. If they had found you any later..."
Sophie felt a wave of fear just thinking about it. An unconscious person submerged in water for any length of time could suffocate.
"Tristan, the weather in Cygnus was awful last night. All the flights were grounded. What on earth was so urgent that you had to rush here overnight?"
"Where’s my phone?"
Sophie pulled a new phone out of her bag.
"Your phone was water-damaged. This is a new one I bought for you. The doctor had to take your SIM card out and put it in someone else’s phone just to contact me. Tristan, do you have any idea how scared I was?"
Tristan took the phone, having no time to answer Sophie, and immediately dialed Noelle’s number.
The call went unanswered until it disconnected automatically.
Tristan saw the logo on the hospital bed was for Cygnus People’s Hospital and immediately got up and walked out.
Sophie ran after him.
"Tristan, what are you doing? The doctor told you to rest!"
"Noelle is in danger."
Tristan said as he strode forward.
But Sophie froze in place.
’He came to Cygnus for Noelle?!’
She had only found out today that roadblocks had been set up in downtown Cygnus after midnight due to severe flooding. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
’So, Tristan must have waded through the floodwaters on foot to get into the city!’
When she rushed over, Tristan had been lying unconscious in the hospital room.
The doctor told her that according to the rescue workers, a manhole cover had been swept away by the water. Tristan had missed his footing and fallen, knocking him unconscious.
He was lucky they found him in time; otherwise, he really could have drowned.
’He’s such a neat freak, yet he waded through filthy water and even collapsed in it.’
’Has Noelle really become that important to him?’
By the time Sophie snapped out of it, Tristan was already rushing into an elevator.
He was so anxious and hurried over Noelle that he completely failed to notice she hadn’t followed him.
Sophie walked to the elevators and saw that his had stopped on the first floor.
She immediately went down to the first floor as well.
Tristan was at the front desk, asking for Noelle’s room number.
After getting the information, he quickly headed back toward the elevators.
Sophie had to quicken her pace to keep up.
"Tristan, I know you’re worried about Noelle, but can you please slow down? The doctor said you have water in your lungs and an infection. You shouldn’t be breathing so heavily."
Tristan didn’t slow down.
Sophie had no choice but to jog to keep up with him.
After they got out of the elevator, Tristan walked even faster.
When they reached the door to Noelle’s hospital room, Tristan shoved it open.
Sophie finally caught up and peered inside. The room was empty.
A janitor was cleaning and tidying up.
Tristan took a step forward.
"Excuse me, where is the patient from this room?"
"She’s already been discharged."
Tristan turned and left immediately.
Sophie was wearing high heels, and after chasing him up and down, she was almost too exhausted to run anymore.
She leaned against the wall, panting, her voice strained with frustration. "Tristan! Where are you going?"
