Chapter 38: [038] Little Noah

After doing some light workout and washing his body, he stepped out and began his day, expecting not a single moment of rest.

Angelina and the other women, with the help of Anton and Jabba’s cutting skill, had been able to cut all the remaining meat from the flame-wolves into good pieces.

Angelina proposed drying the meat in the sun for preservation.

Her idea was casual, but it meant a lot to the elderly women of Ironside village, since they had no method of preservation before.

After supervising and greeting all of them to make sure they were okay, he went ahead to inspect the farmlands, where the elderly men could be seen walking despite their old age.

They were not doing serious work because it was harvest season. They only selected the produce ready for harvest, and the small children who followed them around carried the produce in woven baskets.

Floki strolled further and inspected everywhere around his territory.

The realization that his territory needed a serious upgrade dawned on him. There was a lot to do to make their lives better.

There was food, housing, clothing, providing good drinking water, setting up fences, and many more, and with the time in his hands, he could not even begin to settle down and start taking care of these now.

First, he had a war to plan and an unknown powerful monster to defeat, unless he wanted to lose his territory.

Floki, after strolling around and noting every important thing he had to do, found the field present in the center of the village where they usually held their meetings.

No meeting was happening now, and no one was present.

There was a big tree in the middle of the field, and he found a good sitting spot under the tree.

It was still early morning, and the sun’s glow provided good warmth and illumination to the village. The morning breeze was also quite peaceful.

Floki accessed [Shop] and went straight to the [Miscellaneous🔀] section, where he purchased 100 scrolls and an improved quill pen for 5 shop coins. He also found a good woven mat available for 1 shop coin, but if he purchased 50, he would only need to pay 10 shop coins. He bought them and stored all of them in his inventory to distribute later.

He was now left with 150 skill points.

Placing the mat on the ground, he placed the scrolls down and began to scribble down missions after missions.

With [Quest Provider], only one quest could be active at a time.

But that did not stop him from saving time by writing quests ahead.

Most of his quests included simple tasks like workouts similar to the ones he gave Anton earlier. There were very strict versions and lighter versions targeting different people.

He even wrote down quests that included weeding the farm, repairing houses, fetching water, and cooking, which he planned to distribute among the children and the elderly, as they were not exactly demanding.

He fully exhausted half of the scrolls he bought.

He tore 10 of them at the end because he had to constantly edit due to the system’s nagging reminders.

After he was done, he went through the quests once again and ensured everything was in place.

Then he decided to begin distributing them.

Just as he was about to leave, the crying little boy he carried last night ran towards him.

"Big brother! Big brother!"

He called in his cute voice as he hugged Floki.

Floki carried the little boy, who was only wearing a rag to cover his lower body.

The boy was about the age of 7. He had blonde hair which had become dull due to its unkempt state. He also had round blue eyes which made him quite handsome despite his age and dirty state.

Floki played with him a little bit and learned that the boy had come to call him because the women were looking for him, as they had finished making his breakfast.

The little boy refused to leave even after relaying the information he was sent to deliver.

Floki playfully inquired about his name and learned his name was Noah.

"Noah?"

The name caught Floki off guard, as Noah was the name of one of his close friends.

The name sent a nostalgic feeling across his body as he recalled all the times shared with his best friend.

But the name also triggered something close to horror.

He recalled the scene he had witnessed during his unconsciousness.

The shattered world, the battle happening across the world between humans, zombies, and other creatures, and his friend, Noah, sitting in the middle of a heap of zombie corpses and eating their flesh as though he was some sort of monster.

Since he regained consciousness, his brain had done everything to keep him occupied and prevent those memories from resurfacing.

But now, coincidentally, the memory had been triggered again because of Noah.

For a moment, he forgot about the nagging little boy in his hands while his mind was occupied with thoughts.

What might have happened to his friend?

Noah was the calm, shy, non-violent type of friend. In fact, Noah was an animal lover, and sometimes he would even reject eating meat.

What might have happened to turn such a gentle soul into such a monster?

More precisely, just how much time had passed in Noah’s world for him to change like that?

The more he recalled everything he saw, the more questions surfaced.

"Big brother..."

Little Noah pinched Floki’s face angrily after being ignored for what seemed like a couple of minutes.

"Sorry..."

Floki came back to the moment and apologized.

"Hmm.." Little Noah folded his arms and let out a grudging sound.

His little eyes traced down to the scrolls spread on the mat on the ground.

"What are those?"

He asked curiously.

"Those are quests that I plan to distribute later."

"Quests? What are quests?" Little Noah asked.

"To put it simply, something you do for rewards."

"Rewards..." Little Noah’s eyes widened.

He turned to Floki with expectant eyes.

"Give me a quest, big brother. I want rewards too."

Floki smiled.

A thought crossed his mind.

It was not really bad to start gradually building the children, especially little Noah. He seemed quite smart for his age.

He placed him down, took out a fresh scroll, wrote a simple quest, and handed the scroll to him. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

The quest was a very simple one.

Little Noah just had to return to the women and help bring his breakfast.

Since Little Noah could not read, he read it out for him, and the little boy rushed off with determination.

He returned after a few minutes with a tray of food.

[ Your follower ’Noah’ has completed quest ’Bring my food’ 20 EXP has been distributed ]

Once this notification surfaced, the scroll on which Floki had written the quest vaporised and vanished, surprising Floki.

Last night, no one noticed what happened to the parchment he used because they were focused on Anton.

Thankfully, little Noah was engrossed in checking his body after feeling a wave of unexplainable energy rush through him, and thus, he did not see the scroll disappear.

’He doesn’t understand it yet...’

Floki quickly brought out another scroll and handed it to him as a reward.

"Reward!"

Little Noah grabbed the scroll, forgetting about the unusual sensation he had felt, and rushed away repeating the same word. He was obviously going to show his mother and brag to his friends.

Floki found himself smiling at his antics. It somewhat reminded him of the time his friend Noah had succeeded in beating the most brilliant girl in their class in an exam and bragged about it the whole day.

Nonetheless, quickly taking his mind off that, he decided to focus on the task at hand, unbeknownst to what awaited him.
