Chapter 42: [042] Who is a level 2 old man?

Ironside villagers set their hearts ablaze for a new future.

Each one of them, both old and young, made up their minds to work their hardest toward that future. A future where all their suffering would be no more. One where they would be able to feed themselves without having to work like slaves, and one where they knew their offspring would be safe.

Floki made sure to use these changes to the fullest.

He spent the whole day handing out quest after quest, without bothering to rest or eat.

Each of the sixty villagers he had received at least one quest to do.

The quest-handling rampage was so massive that he ran out of the quests he initially prepared and had to excuse himself, find a quiet place, purchase two hundred scrolls and enough quill pens, and create new quests on the spot.

Thankfully, the villagers did not ask questions about how he got the scrolls or the quests, as every single one of them was far more focused on receiving and completing them.

It was already the early hours of the night. The half-moon cast a faint crescent glow across the land.

Yet none of the villagers seemed tired or less energetic at all.

They were all still lingering at the farmlands, where most of the remaining quests, including exercises and farming tasks, took place.

Their loud voices could still be heard, each filled with vigor and excitement.

At the moment, Old Charleston could be seen using his new hoe to dig heaps ahead of his next planting season.

The old man worked with a smile on his face despite the fact that he still had to rely on a walking stick. Well, Floki had already decided to make that walking stick aspect temporary.

’Old Charleston is the best farmer in Ironside. It would be a waste if his efficiency is reduced by his weak legs,’ Floki thought.

As a result, he had specially prepared quests for him.

So far, he had completed four of them and earned a total of 85 experience points as rewards.

And now, he was doing the last quest to accumulate one hundred experience points, which was the exact threshold required for a level up.

"Keep going, old man Charleston!"

"My husband, you can do it!"

The people cheered him on as Old Charleston continued working.

Even the women from Wayan were clapping their hands with smiles, clearly impressed by the old man’s effort.

Floki watched as Old Charleston finished digging his twentieth heap, which was the requirement for the quest.

[ Your follower ’Charleston’ has completed quest ’Dig 20 Heaps’. 15 EXP has been distributed ]

[ Your follower ’Charleston’ has leveled up from the distributed EXP. Current level: 2 ]

Floki was notified of the level up instantly, which caused a faint smile to appear on his face.

Yet the changes brought by the level up also manifested visibly in front of everyone.

Old Charleston had just finished his task and, out of excitement, he let go of his walking stick, lifted his hand, and cried out in a loud, triumphant voice.

His wife hurried toward him to hug her husband, clearly filled with pride and relief.

Seeing his wife moving toward him, Old Charleston, forgetting he was supposed to be limp from his waist down, started running toward her without the aid of his walking stick.

"Darling! I did it!"

He let out, but even his voice carried a different tone. It was no longer weak like before. It was clear, strong, and full of life.

Everyone knew Charleston’s condition, so even the change in his voice was deeply felt by all of them.

The sudden transformation came as a shock, and all the villagers paused their cheering and stared at the old man with wide, astonished eyes.

Old Charleston and his wife were caught up in the moment and remained unaware of everything else.

Only after a few seconds into their hug did the realization finally dawn on them.

Old Charleston’s wife slowly backed away and stared at her husband’s legs in disbelief.

"H-honey... Y-you’re standing!"

She placed her hand over her mouth and exclaimed.

"Heh..."

Old Charleston looked down.

He saw his own legs, and his ’third leg,’ also known as his walking stick, was no longer there.

Yet he was standing perfectly, with no pain or weakness at all.

"I-I can stand."

His eyes widened further and further as he fully realized what had taken place within his body.

At that same moment, all the benefits from the level up began to reveal themselves more clearly.

His hands, his legs, every part of him brimmed with new vitality and strength.

The vitality and strength coursing within him felt even greater than what he had experienced in his prime.

The other villagers watched his reaction with deep amazement.

They saw as tears formed in the eyes of the old man whose body had miraculously recovered right before them.

One after another, their gazes shifted toward the catalyst of this miracle.

Their beloved Chief.

Floki received their looks with a calm smile.

"Old Charleston, I am sure you feel anew," he strode forward and spoke clearly so everyone could hear him.

"Young chief, I do not just feel anew, I feel like I have ascended. My hands, my legs, my eyesight. Everything about me has evolved."

Old Charleston said with an emotional voice.

"Wow..."

"This is supernatural."

His testimony boosted the people’s motivation to complete quests even further.

They quickly surrounded Floki, and this time, they all knelt. Some even lay flat on the ground as they pleaded for a quest.

"I am sorry, everyone, but this is the last quest for today," Floki announced.

His announcement was received with visible dejection, as the villagers were clearly still eager for more.

But Floki had already done enough for the day.

He had exhausted a large amount of experience points and even skill points, as he had to convert them into shop coins and purchase certain items used as rewards.

Floki had made up his mind to use the night to acquire more skill points and experience points by hunting alone.

But before anything else, he had to settle his people and ensure they were in the right state before he left. After all, they were soon going to be faced with the laughter of the night laugher.

Speaking of the night laugher, the quest the system promised about it had already been triggered, and the rewards were more beneficial than he had initially imagined.

"My quest for every one of you tonight is to return to your homes, feed yourselves and your families, and sleep peacefully. Tomorrow is a new day, and a lot will happen, so rest is non-negotiable."

Despite the lingering desire in their eyes to continue the quests without rest, they still obeyed immediately.

"Good night, young chief."

"May the firmament continue to bless you for us. Please rest well."

"If you like, young master, you can join us for dinner. My wife has discovered a new recipe. It is really delicious."

They all bade him farewell one after another.

The elderly men shook his hand with pride before leaving.

The women hugged him with warm smiles before departing.

And the children did not want to leave at all. Their parents had to drag them along.

Right now, only Jabba and Anton were left in the farmlands with Floki.

"You two should retire for the day as well," Floki said calmly.

"No, young chief, we will not rest unless you are in your hut," Jabba responded almost immediately, and Anton backed him up.

"You both know I am stronger than you, right?" Floki asked with a faint smile.

"We know, but that will not stop us from being your guards," they replied.

Floki was touched by their words. Unfortunately, he currently had no need for their presence.

So he quickly wrote down a quest and handed it to the two of them, asking them to leave him alone.

They were adamant at first, but seeing that Floki truly wanted to be left alone, they reluctantly bade their farewell and left.

Floki heaved a sigh of relief after they had gone.

"Now it is time for me to focus on myself."

He opened his character status to check how many skill points he had.

[ Skill points: 110 ]

It was several times smaller than what he had the night before, but it was still usable.

He opened his shop and went straight to the skill section.

Twenty-four hours had passed since the shop first opened, so there were now new items listed in each category.

After a few minutes of scrolling, his eyes landed on a new skill, which he purchased without hesitation.

With the new skill in his arsenal, he took a final look at his village.

It was peaceful.

But he knew this peace was only temporary.

’I will be back.’

Uttering those words to himself, he burst into a full sprint in the direction of the dark forest.
