A Heaven-sent Sweet Child Falls Asking for Hugs-Chapter 78: A Resounding Slap
Standing beside Wanda Quincy and Beanie, Madam Ford heard Jasper Ford’s question and asked in surprise, "What engagement party?"
"Mom, he’s the one who caused a scene at my engagement party," Jasper Ford said, pointedly indicating Beanie.
Exposed so ruthlessly, Beanie’s cheeks grew hot, and he shyly shrank away.
Madam Ford immediately noticed something was off. Her eyes darted between them. "Beanie," Madam Ford said, "did you two know each other before?"
"No," Beanie said, shaking his head.
Madam Ford lowered her gaze, her kind and gentle voice full of probing curiosity. "If you don’t know each other, why cause a scene at the wedding?"
"I..." Beanie glanced frantically at Wanda Quincy, took a deep breath, and said, "Because she bullied my mommy and me. I don’t know why she did it, but I was upset, so I..."
So that was it. Wanda Quincy had bullied Beanie and his mother, and Beanie caused a scene at such a grand ceremony to get back at her.
It all made sense now.
Wiping tears from the corners of his eyes, Beanie continued, "It’s all my fault. I deserved to be hit. Miss Ford, I’m sorry. If it weren’t for me, Wanda Quincy would be your daughter-in-law by now, and maybe you’d even have a grandchild soon. It’s all my fault for causing you trouble."
The poor little thing took all the blame upon himself.
Wanda Quincy had been furious, terrified that Beanie would do something crazy and drag her down with him, but she never expected him to be so obedient and admit his mistake! She stood up happily, smiling. "Madam Ford, since everything is out in the open, there’s nothing more to discuss. Shall we call it even? What do you think?" ’Turning a big problem into a small one, and a small one into nothing—this is the best possible outcome!’
Madam Ford’s eyes narrowed. "I don’t think so," she said, displeased.
"Then..." Wanda Quincy hesitated, unsure of what the older woman was planning.
Madam Ford strode up to her, raised her hand, and—SLAP!—struck her across the face.
In an instant, the entire office fell dead silent.
Wanda Quincy stumbled and fell to the ground, clutching her face, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Madam Ford, you..."
"Now we’re even." Madam Ford looked down imperiously at Wanda Quincy, her powerful aura like that of a lofty queen. She then reminded Jasper Ford, "Control your woman. I’m getting old, and I don’t want to waste my time on riff-raff. And this hand of mine... it actually hurts to slap people. Remember to buy me a tube of ointment on your way home tonight."
With that, she turned and walked out.
Utterly and completely domineering!
Wanda Quincy, who had been about to seek Jasper Ford’s support, turned deathly pale. Being as sharp as she was, how could she fail to understand Madam Ford’s deliberate implication? Jasper Ford was her son. Even if she hit someone right in front of him, he wouldn’t dare utter a single word in protest.
Wanda Quincy lowered her head as her tears dripped onto the floor, one after another. Finally, she stood up, wiped her eyes, and said in a choked voice, "I’ll be going now."
Jasper Ford didn’t stop her, only watching with cold eyes. He hadn’t gotten the answers he wanted, and he was not pleased.
That afternoon, Caden Chandler returned from the hospital with a lab report and handed it to Jasper Ford. It stated in black and white that Beanie Quincy and Wanda Quincy shared no blood relationship. In other words, Beanie had been lying.
Jasper Ford’s long fingers tapped gently on the desk. He was silent for a long time before he slowly dialed Madam Ford’s number. "Mom, bring Beanie home for dinner tonight. Invite his mother over as well."
After taking the call, Madam Ford looked down at the little boy beside her. "How about you and your mommy come to the Ford Family home for dinner tonight? Ford feels bad and wants to personally invite you both to apologize."
"No, Mommy is very busy. We shouldn’t bother her," Beanie said, shaking his head firmly. He added, "Besides, I was in the wrong too. Ford likes that Wanda Quincy so much. It’s my fault they aren’t a couple."
"Silly boy, you didn’t do anything wrong at all. I don’t like that woman as a daughter-in-law either. You did a wonderful thing," Madam Ford praised Beanie heartily, then promptly hung up the phone.
Jasper Ford didn’t hear what his mother said after that. He just found it amusing. Putting his phone aside, he habitually glanced out the window. The desk that faced his window was completely empty. Before, when Vivian Quincy was there, he could see her just by looking up. Back then, he’d found the sight of her intensely irritating. Now, looking out and seeing no one, Jasper Ford felt a little... unaccustomed to it.
He asked Caden Chandler, "How is Vivian Quincy doing over in the warehouse?"
Caden Chandler replied, "She’s doing very well. She’s managed to complete the workload of four people all by herself."
Jasper Ford raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Her?"
"Yes. But I heard the supervisor say her hands are probably wrecked. I just took a special trip to the warehouse to see for myself, and they’re injured quite badly," Caden Chandler described vividly.
Jasper Ford suddenly fell silent. The hand holding a pen, poised to sign a document, froze. His voice was cold. "She didn’t ask to see me?"
"No." Caden Chandler shook his head. Seeing that Jasper Ford seemed angry, he quickly added, "Vivian Quincy probably feels guilty. She feels she’s let you down and is too ashamed to face you, so she’s chosen to serve you quietly from a basic position."
"You certainly have a way with words," Jasper Ford snorted, putting down his pen. "Have her come see me."
"Understood." Caden Chandler left quickly. When he arrived at the warehouse, Vivian Quincy was still working. Her face was haggard, and it was clear she was exhausted. Beside her, several other employees were sitting around, eating snacks and playing cards, with no intention of helping her.
The moment Caden Chandler arrived, the card-playing employees jumped to their feet in fright. "Hello, Chandler."
Caden Chandler’s expression was pensive. He didn’t respond to them, walking straight to Vivian Quincy. "The President wants to see you."
At his words, the faces of the watching employees changed, their eyes filling with jealousy.
Vivian, however, was just surprised. "What does he want to see me for?"
"Don’t ask questions. Just clean yourself up and come with me right now," Caden Chandler said, not giving her any details.
Vivian murmured an "oh" and went to the adjacent restroom to wash her hands and wipe her grimy face. Wiping away the dirt only revealed how pale she was underneath. The gauze on her hands was also filthy, so she unwrapped it all. Caden Chandler watched as Vivian applied ointment to herself; the skin on her pretty little palms was raw and broken.
Inside the elevator, Caden Chandler added, "Since the President wants to see you, he must be ready to forgive you. When you get up there, be sure to watch what you say and do. Don’t make him angry. If you can make him happy, he might just transfer you back to your old position right away. You’re not cut out for that kind of rough labor, so be smart about this, understand?"
Vivian Quincy nodded as if she understood, but inwardly she was completely baffled. ’Why on earth would Jasper Ford want to see me out of the blue?’
