Chapter 38: Heading into the red zone

*Knock* *knock* *knock*

*Bang*

Chuck shot up from his bed as the mild knocking sound he filtered out of his sleeping mind turned into a loud bang, making him think that he was under attack. The PTSD he got from the unfolding events made him unstable, wary, and anxious. He stepped down from his bed to see the being that had decided to interrupt his peaceful slumber.

The first thing that Chuck noticed was the fact that his room wasn’t dark — it was bright, the beams of rays from the sun seeped in through the windows, increasing the temperature of Chuck’s small room. He twisted the door knob, opening it carefully. When the door was wide enough for a human to fit through, Chuck saw a familiar figure force his way though.

"Hey Chucky, what’s up?" Erik said with a beaming smile as he casually crashed on Chuck’s bed.

Chuck could immediately tell that something felt different about Erik, almost like he had just released a boatload of stress out of his being, making an overwhelming feeling of relief wash over his body.

"What’s up? The ceiling I guess," Chuck replied, taking a seat on the sofa.

"sarcasm doesn’t suit you. So why the fuck did you take so long to get back? What held you back?" Erik asked.

Chuck felt reluctant about telling Erik that he had just murdered three students in a berserk mode, but he needed someone to talk to when expressing his personal feelings. He couldn’t carry the burden of possessing the energy of another race alone, nor could he handle the thought of becoming like them. According to the system, he was still a human, and that was good enough for him to go with.

"I... I got ambushed. I think they were sent by Bobby."

Chuck proceeded to reveal the whole story to Erik, telling him about the pure immortal form and how powerful he felt while in that form. He also sugarcoated some information, deciding not to reveal the full details of how everything occurred. He also told Erik how he absorbed the energies of the two remaining students adding their energies to his. He decided to leave out the part of unlocking the Harelm guide, deciding not to cause more confusion.

"And lastly, I absorbed one of the beast crystals. I didn’t know how I did it, I just knew that I could do it," Chuck said, "I think it’s a perfect way for me to grow stronger."

"You’re really starting to perform feats that seem inhuman. The absorption of a beast crystal isn’t a process that someone learns out of the blue, it takes a time of practice and training to be able to use an absorption technique on someone or something. You’re really gifted," Erik explained, his expression hardening the more Chuck spoke.

"Everything’s been strange since I absorbed the energy," Chuck replied with a huge sigh, he fell back to the body of the sofa, resting lazily on it.

"Yeah, but no more absorption of crystals. You can’t be the reason as to why we don’t win this event. We need as many crystals as we can get," Erik said as he slowly rose from the bed, "we better get going, we need to get to Kaiden and the...twins."

"Agreed."

Chuck got up with a grunt, freshened up, and headed out alongside Erik. They found their way to the medical building, traversing through the busy hallway until they reached a particular door. Chuck opened the door, he could feel his nerves spiking as the view of the room came into view.

Expecting to see Kaiden still sleeping, they walked in to meet a sight that shocked them a little. Kaiden could be seen seated with a mirror and a brush on both hands as she combed her hair stylishly in a casual way, almost like she didn’t remember the near death experience she had.

She paused midway upon noticing the duo that stepped into her hospital room. With a straight face, she lowered her hands, dropping the utensils on a desk beside her. She stood up, still looking as astounding as ever as she walked towards Chuck and Erik. Chuck stared at Kaiden as she advanced towards his position, taking note of every step she made. He felt some heat in a certain section of his pants, followed by a rising hardness — every step Kaiden took made Chuck’s nerves pulsate violently.

Kaiden stopped right before the duo as she spoked.

"How do I look? Does my hair still look messy? I hope I don’t look fat in thos dress, seeing as my old attire received a gaping hole from a beast."

Chuck wondered how Kaiden could be so calm and casual after such a traumatic event, she didn’t seem to be fazed by anything as she acted like her normal self. Before Erik could speak, he stepped forward, pushing Erik to the side, wanting Kaiden’s attention all to himself.

"Uh... y.. y... you look gorgeous... even more gorgeous than ever," Chuck said with a stutter, unable to compose proper words due to the pulsating feeling he was experiencing in Kaiden’s presence.

Kaiden looked at him with a raised brow, wondering why Chuck was feeling so nervous.

"Lance came by earlier. He told me that you used this... golden energy of yours to heal me, saving my life. Thanks, I owe you one, darling," Kaiden said as she moved slightly towards Chuck.

She raised her hand towards Chuck’s face, brushing her fingers against his cheek. Chuck’s cheeks flushed, he felt the hardness on his pants intensify as tiny beads of sweats formed on his forehead. He glanced at Kaiden in a trance like state, staring at the flawlessness of her oval face as they merged perfectly with her tiny lips, blending into a perfect intoxicating sight.

But the moment was short-lived as Kaiden swiftly pulled away heading back to her chair. She picked up a lipstick, twisting its cap as she slowly smeared it on her lips.

"Uhhh Kaiden, now that you’re... okay, we think it’ll be best for us to head out into the yellow zone to kill some beasts," Erik said with a low and soft tone, "hopefully, we’ll avoid any dangerous situation."

Kaiden paused, taking a deep look at Erik. She looked at him in silence, until she finally broke it as she spoke.

"About that... I think we’re too strong for the beasts in the yellow zone. What happened to me was just a sloppy mistake."

"And what the hell do you mean by that?" Erik asked, a slow feeling of fear crept over his being.

"What I’m trying to say," Kaiden replied with a straight face.

"... I think it will be best if we head to the red zone."
