Chapter 44: A cave system

There were about six immortal colossus’ chasing after Chuck and Kaiden. They constantly had to shift their positions, changing their trajectory as they tried to evade the barrage of attacks that the beast released. Every second felt like a closed inch between the beasts and the duo. No matter how hard they tried to accelerate or increase their speed, the beasts only seemed to be closing the distance between them.

They flew into different section of the forest, flying past the muddy soil with dired leaves, emerging into a rocky landscape, while still in the red zone. Erik and the twins were no where to be seen as they took another route, trying to veer some of the beasts in another direction. When it seemed like Chuck and Kaiden were never going to evade the beasts, Chuck saw what looked like a small cave opening high up atop a towering hill.

"Hey Kaiden...look over the top of that hill," Chuck said with pauses over his words due to how exhausted he felt from the constant chase, "isn’t that a cave right over there?"

Kaiden squinted her eyes, her visibility lessened due to the heat from the flames radiating from her body. She looked over to the top of the hill, and she could see a small opening, large enough for humans to pass through, but extremely small for the gargantuan colossus’.

"But what if there are other beasts lurking around there? What if the beast in the cave are even more powerful than an immortal colossus?" Kaiden asked, feeling reluctant about heading over to the cave.

Just then, she saw a large blade that reflected a golden glow beside Chuck.

"Chuck look out!"

Chuck turned his head to see a large blade that sliced through the air with ease. It headed for his head with a smooth precision, only being a few moments away from beheading him. Chuck quickly swerved upwards, doing a side flip towards the bladed claw. He could see the blade skim past his head as he flipped his body, the breeze from the blade violently hit his skin in accordance. Chuck flapped even harder, creating a small distance between him and the beast once more.

"Isn’t heading over to a place where there won’t be any potential beast better than staying here? Where these giant fucks are clearly certified to kill us?" Chuck yelled in annoyance.

He didn’t wait for Kaiden’s reply as he flew upwards in the direction of the hill.

"Don’t fly that high, Chuck. You don’t know what kind of flying evolved beast lurk around the tress," Kaiden said as she tried to catch up to Chuck.

They glided in a considerable height, trying to keep a good distance between them and the beasts that were still chasing them from the ground.

They flew past a couple barricading trees until they got to the hill. Kaiden and Chuck flew upwards in the direction of the slit they saw. Looking down, they could still see the beasts chasing after them from the ground. They climbed the hill effortlessly and unrelentlessly.

Eventually, they got to the opening of the cave. They flew inside the entrance, embracing the darkness that surrounded them. The only source of light was the dim light rays that seeped through the entrance. Chuck dismissed the infernal shroud, while keeping his flaming wings active as a source of light. Kaiden collapsed on the hard cave ground as the exhaustion overwhelmed her being entirely.

She had used the last bit of mana she had to project herself into the cave entrance, crashing down forcefully as her body tumbled over. Chuck ran over to her swiftly, helping her up before she grazed her skin even more.

"Are you okay?" Chuck asked with a concerned tone.

"Yeah, yeah. I’m just feeling a little bit light headed. I think my mana has been exhausted," Kaiden replied in a low tone.

Chuck lifted her up from the ground, his hands rested firmly on her soft body as he could feel certain parts that made his pulse spike. He looked around as his large flaming wings illuminated their surroundings. He saw a small stone platform by the side, and he carried Kaiden over to the stone. She sat down in utter exhaustion as she rested her back on the wall.

"Just stay here for now and cultivate to get back your energy. I’ll be on standby," Chuck said.

Before he could compose any more words, he heard a deafening bang coming forth from behind. Turning around, he saw one of the beasts trying to force its way into the cave. The beast pulled its head backwards, and with a swift motion, it lunged forward again, pushing its head deeper into the cave entrance. The entire surrounding shook violently, dust and rubbles fell from the ceiling, and stones rolled over.

"Shit!" Chuck cursed, kissing his teeth in anguish.

"Maybe if we head deeper into the cave and the beasts lose sight of us, they will stop chasing after us," Kaiden suggested. Her hands were firmly placed on the walls close to her as she tried to stay balanced due to the constant vibrations that the beasts caused.

Chuck looked over to her, he could see her skin getting paler by the second, streams of sweats flowing down her face, "it’s worth a shot."

He ran over to Kaiden, grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up from the ground.

"Careful," Kaiden said as Chuck’s wings came in close contact with her, nearly burning her skin.

Chuck ran forward with speed, constantly trying to regain balance as the beast forcefully lunged its head into the cave entrance, breaking bits of the cave wall. He ran forward with Kaiden on his arms, deeper and deeper into the cave network.

Chuck took a deep curve as he progressed further, turning away from the cave entrance. The instant his figure was no longer visible through the entrance, the vibrations stopped, the constant banging discontinued, and the whole cave went silent.

"You were right," Chuck said in relief, "it seems like they aren’t trying to get in anymore."

He looked over to Kaiden, expecting a reply, but she was already passed out cold on his arms, her breathing slow, but steady.

Chuck slowly dropped her on the ground, placing her body in a smooth section of the cave. He sighed as a feeling of relief washed over his body, calming his nerves for a moment. Chuck stared around his surroundings,he could see several tunnels that connected the cave from different directions — it seemed like a maze in there.

Chuck looked forward into a particular tunnel section as he saw a dim beam of light emanating from it. The tunnel section seemed to be smaller than most, easily unnoticeable if one didn’t observe properly, but Chuck could clearly see a blue hue coming forth from that section.

"What the hell is that? Why is there a blue reflection coming from that tunnel?" Chuck asked, he continued his advancement towards the entrance, the blue light got even brighter the closer he got.

"Maybe it’s another opening of the cave. But it still doesn’t explain why the light is blue, and not white."

Chuck got close to the tunnel section, and when he got to the entrance, what he saw made his heart skip a few beats as he stumbled backwards.

"Is that... beast crystals... attached to the walls of the cave?"

"And why are there so many? Why are the crystals thousands?"
