Chapter 47: Let’s get stronger

The cave was filled with silence as the duo stood facing each other. Kaiden stared at Chuck with a confused and horrified look as she placed her hand against the tunnel wall, using it as a supportive system. Her gaze constantly shifted, staring at the empty crystal on Chuck’s hand. It was filled with hollowness as the energy had already been absorbed by Chuck, and Kaiden had witnessed it all.

Chuck stared at her, unsure of how she had found him.

[ It was probably the loud yells you directed at me that woke her up ]

Chuck let go off the crystal, dropping it to the ground as he spoke, "hey Kaiden, you’re awake. Thank goodness."

"Thank goodness? I’m gonna ask you one more time. What the hell do you think you’re doing?" Kaiden asked, raising her voice slightly higher.

Chuck stared at her in confusion, unsure of why she wasn’t heightened by the fact that there were countless amount of crystals situated around them — crystals that could help them win the event.

[ It seems like your body is reacting differently to her presence. Is this what humans call love? ]

"Shut the fuck up!" Chuck yelled.

"What the fuck?" Kaiden said, hearing what Chuck had just said.

"No... no. It wasn’t directed at you," Chuck said immediately, trying not to escalate the matter, "I thought you’d be happy about the fact that we just discovered a large pool of crystals that would help us win the event and potentially make us stronger.

Kaiden facepalmed with a deep sigh of disappointment. She walked over to Chuck, closing the distance between them. When she was in a close enough proximity, she bent down, picking the empty crystal up from the ground. She stared at it intently for a while before she finally spoke up.

"These crystals serves as an energy source that strengthens the structure of this cave. The more crystals you take away from the walls of this tunnel, the more the cave gets weakened, and it’ll reach the point where the cave would have lost so much energy, hence collapsing and killing us," Kaiden explained lengthily

"But isn’t a cave supposed to be a regular cave? Why the hell does it need the support of a crystal?" Chuck asked, still feeling confused.

"This cave isn’t natural. By seeing these crystals, it should tell us that someone planted them here as a form of stability for the cave. We’re in the red zone, so that means that several species of powerful beasts roam around here," Kaiden explained,

"My best guess is that maybe there are powerful beasts that uses the cave as a shelter, and the cave was just too weak to house the strength of the beasts, so the the best alternative was to use the energy from these crystals to strengthen the walls of the cave."

Chuck listened to Kaiden attentively, but the last thing she said sent a chill down his spine.

"Wait a second, are you trying to say that there are some beasts in this cave?" Chuck asked.

"If these crystals are here, then yes, there are. Another reason as to why we need to leave and find the others," Kaiden said, turning around towards the exit of the tunnel section.

She walked out of the tunnel and took an immediate stop when she noticed something. Chuck wasn’t following her from behind, he was still standing in his position, not willing to leave the tunnel. Kaiden turned with an angry expression as she spoke.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Kaiden yelled, her voice echoed around the cave system, "are you really willing to sacrifice our lives for a stupid event?

[ Don’t leave, Chuck. According to my calculations, if what she says is true, you only need to absorb about 65 percent of the crystals to weaken the cave to a significant degree ]

Chuck listened to the Harelm guide, trusting it’s judgement more than Kaiden’s.

"Look, it’s not about the event alright? It’s about growing stronger and accumulating enough energy to reach a higher mage stage. You can’t tell me that you haven’t thought about it," Chuck said, trying to convince Kaiden to stay with him.

Kaiden couldn’t deny the fact that this was a perfect chance for her to grow stronger and win the event by a large margin, but she couldn’t risk her life in the process.

"I’m sorry. If you’re gonna kill yourself, then I’m not gonna die with you," Kaiden said as she turned around, taking her leave.

"I’m gonna stay at the entrance of the cave, and when I’ve harvested enough mana, I’ll leave."

Chuck stood in silence as he watched Kaiden’s silhouette vanish into the darkness. He turned to his side, taking a glance at the glowing crystals that hummed in a synchronized pattern of energy. A part of him wanted to chase after Kaiden, but he was quickly pulled back by the infuriating voice in his head.

[ You can’t afford to lose focus for just one girl. You have to grow stronger... ]

"Grow stronger for what!!!," Chuck yelled in anger.

"Ever since I unlocked your crazy ass, you’ve been speaking in riddles and parables. You want me to grow stronger for a cause that you won’t divulge any information about, you won’t tell me about the origin of my energy and how it’s connected to your stupid nexus crystal."

[ You will get the knowledge you need when the time is ri...]

"Fuck you! And fuck your knowledge," Chuck yelled, holding his head in anger, "if you don’t tell something that is worth my time, I will leave the cave along with Kaiden, now. I’m not gonna risk my life for something that I don’t know about."

[ Alright! The energy you possess is an energy that belongs to a race called the immortals. They are a race that lives in a different plane from yours with one sole purpose — to conquer and enslave as many worlds as they can ]

"Go on," Chuck said in an annoyed tone.

[ The immortals have managed to enslave every single planet in their plane, bending them to their will ]

[ Now they want to go even further. They want to escape the golden plane and head into the white plane so they can also enslave the planets of the white plane ]

"And I take our plane is called the white plane?" Chuck asked

[ Yes ]

[ The immortals will come, and I can assure you that no human or race that resides in this plane will be capable of fending them off. They are strong, powerful, and they possess the energies of gods. The Harelm energy isn’t just another source of magic like mana, it’s a universal link ]

[ The immortals will come to this plane, and when they arrive, you need to be ready ]

[ I believe that is all you need to know for now. Now focus on increasing your energy level by absorbing these crystals ]

Chuck didn’t need to hear anything else, he already knew what he had to do. Without second thoughts, he reached for one of the crystals, pulling it from the wall. The crystal glowed with a pulsating power in his grasp, he could feel the pure energy resting on his palm.

"Let’s get stronger."
