A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 83: Locating Feature
The next day things returned to normal. Well almost. Theo was back to hunting, his shoulder injury now just a red mark that would definitely scar, but he was now hunting with Jason.
With the bird beastman flying around and tracking prey, it made hunting much easier and they agreed to split whatever they hunted seventy-thirty. That way Jaon could repay his debt with food while also getting enough food for himself for the cold season. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Traveling back to his tribe would take him about a week and thus he wouldn’t have enough time to properly prepare for the cold season. Thus, he was temporarily staying with Healer Kai until the rainy season came.
Meanwhile, Serena returned to the patch of long, orange squash to get more of them. They had gone down well during yesterday’s lunch despite the awkward start. So, Serena was keen to get more.
She had even found that they were in her field guide, increasing her plant knowledge up to twenty-six plants and her money to 470 coins.
Of course, she would like to increase her coins more, but other than accessing the system shop and world map, there wasn’t much else she could do. Liz was still MIA.
"It’s really acting childish." Serena muttered aloud as she placed another squash into her basket. "Does it need to unmute itself or something?"
Suddenly a system notification popped up in front of her.
[Confirm Unmuting]
Serena gaped at the words before she sighed, "Confirmed."
As soon as she said that, the system notification disappeared and something attached itself to her upper arm. Serena moved to grab it with her other hand, stopping short at the sight of a familiar blue snake.
"Liz... About time you showed up." Serena murmured. "Was me manually having to unmute you really necessary? What are you, a child?"
"Technically speaking I am a child. Infant really considering I was born two days ago." The blue snake hissed out. "And muting is a system feature. So of course you have to unmute me manually!"
Well that information comes in handy. Serena mused to herself before she asked, "Well next time don’t talk my ear off then when I’m busy."
"But I have nothing better to do." Liz retorted. "You barely make use of the system."
That was mostly because she couldn’t trust it. The system was not there to help her, but rather to achieve someone else’s objectives. So, even subconsciously, Serena had been avoiding the system unless it was absolutely necessary.
And when Liz appeared and hinted at someone creating her and wanting her to do something, it confirmed her suspicions about the mission given to her. Thus she was still being cautious.
Because overeliance on it would one day backfire on her.
"Although I guess I should be glad you don’t really use it." Liz continued. "Otherwise I wouldn’t have been created to help you. My existence is thanks to your lack of abilities."
Serena narrowed her eyes at the snake, not sure how to take that backhanded compliment. Finally she murmured, "You know, you have a way with words."
Liz blinked at her before it said, "Thank you."
"That wasn’t..." Serena shook her head. "Actually nevermind... Liz, you said you can shift into any form right?"
"Yes?" Liz nodded its head. "Why do you ask?"
"And what about doing things?" Serena then questioned. "Can you perform physical tasks given out by the host? Or can you only act as some kind of support?"
"Only support." Liz answered. "I can answer questions, assist in finding mission, help you locate something-"
"Locating?" Serena perked up. "So if I ask you to give me the location of something, can you?"
"Yes. I’m even able to put the location on your map to guide you to it." Liz nodded its head. "However, it’s only limited to a 50km radius and only in areas that you’ve explored before."
Serena pursed her lips at her words. So, the location thing worked a bit like a GPS system combined with some kind of honing system. And the restrictions weren’t too bad.
At least for what she wanted to use this locating feature for. Of course, she would’ve liked to have the latter restriction to not exist and maybe have the radius increase, but she could still make this work.
Of course, this makes me look like I’m eating my words about not wanting to rely on the system. Serena sighed to herself. But I guess if I’m going to get taken advantage of, then I’ll be doing the same.
"Hmmm.... In that case, could you locate some deer, wild birds and any rootless beastmen around?" Serena asked. She then added, "Oh and any monster hordes."
This would definitely save her time having to search for any deer or wild birds to complete her mission. Which she would need to do soon because they were getting less and less.
And she would use the locating feature to also figure out if there were any rootless beastmen or monster hordes around to avoid trouble. Another problem she had completing this mission.
"Understood." Liz said as its eyes flashed for a second. "Currently searching area.... Please wait...."
As Liz went to work searching for all the things Serena had requested, Serena went back to harvesting some more long, orange squash. Her basket was already halfway filled with them.
She managed to get several more harvested when Liz suddenly spoke up, "Search completed."
A second later the system world map popped up and zoomed in on the forest area Serena was currently in. Much of the area was still dark since she hadn’t explored it and her current location was marked.
As were several other things. Most were the location of wild birds, but there was also the location of a monster horde some distance away.
Which immediately made her ask, "They won’t pose a problem to the village will they?"
"Not until the rainy season." Liz replied. "Most monster hordes begin going into hibernation during this time or they migrate north where it’s the rainy season now."
"I see..." Serena mused as her eyes gazed at the last marker on the map.
The location of a herd of deer about a kilometer away from her.
