Chapter 99: Wheat

There were a few other parts of the forest also marked, but Serena decided to go to the other that was nearest. It was already mid morning and she didn’t want to go too far out.

She could always go exploring later on. After all, she still needed to complete that exploration mission and get some more parts of the forest uncovered. She was only at three percent currently.

Once her basket was strapped to her back, Serena headed south, following the rough direction of the map to guide her to the spot. It took her about twenty minutes to finally get to the exact location.

And she frowned at the sight, not sure where these grains were.

There were trees and bushes everywhere like normal along with a few patches of vegetables here and there. Some plants she recognized, but others she didn’t.

"So, where are these grains?" Serena asked Liz.

The blue snake shifted into a bird with a sigh and flew over to a bunch of long, brown stalks with long leaves and a strange golden, brown flower on the top.

"This is called wheat." Liz stated, flying back to Serena and shifting back into a snake to rest on her upper arm. She then continued, "The top part can be used to feed wild birds and if you crush it into a powder you can make food from the powder."

Serena raised an eyebrow, now curious to learn more about this plant. It was already enough if she could use it to feed the wild birds, but if she could make food from it too...

Perhaps she had a way to complete that stupid food item mission.

"How do I harvest and make it into food?" Serena asked.

"That information is only available in the Foraging and Cookery book series." Liz answered. "You can get it for a low 600 coins and I’ll even add a basic animal husbandry book to the lot."

"What are you? A used spaceship salesman." Serena muttered sarcastically at the response. "Also what is animal husbandry."

She knew she was trying her luck trying to get that information from Liz, but to think the system would tell her she needed to buy that information. And for so much too.

She had what... 670 coins currently. Was it trying to make her completely broke? She was barely able to recover anything compared to what she was spending.

"I’m not sure what a salesman is... So, I’m not that." Liz mused. "As for animal husbandry, it’s basically how to care, cultivate, and breed animals. You already have something similar for crops in that farming book of yours. This book has an extended guide to raising livestock like your wild birds."

Serena pursed her lips at those words. The information in the farming book was indeed limited for animals, focusing more on crops. Which was what she needed for the farming part of the city.

Livestock farming wasn’t something they were going into. It was only the few wild birds Theo and her were keeping for an extra source of food. They really didn’t need much more, so that husbandry book didn’t seem necessary.

However, she would land up needing that foraging and cookery book. Otherwise, she wouldn’t know how to harvest wheat or how to prepare it.

Unless...

"I think I’ll put that on hold for now." Serena finally stated.

She then walked over to the bunch of wheat plants and used one of her claws to cut a few of the stalks. She then placed them into her basket.

If she couldn’t get any information from the system without having to pay, she’d try the village first. Perhaps someone knew more about these plants and could give her what she needed.

Only if no one could help her out would Serena resort to the system and pay that stupid price. Liz gazed at her and shook its head.

"You really like doing things the hard way." It murmured aloud.

Serena scoffed at its provoking words. "Nope. I just like not paying for free information."

And with that Serena heeded back to the village. She walked a bit of a roundabout way, using her world map to go through parts she hadn’t explored yet.

Of course, this meant that by the time Serena got back to the village, she was tired from lugging around her heavy basket and it was close to noon, but at least the percent had risen to three point five.

And she got some training in.

She first headed to the village center to get Kiro and drop off Emma’s half of what she harvested today. Additionally, she asked the other beastwomen about the wheat plants.

However, it seemed the rabbit village didn’t really eat the grains when they were brown. They only seemed to like it when it was green. Serena sighed at that, thanking them before heading off to the hut.

Liz gave her a ’told you so’ look which she ignored as she returned to the hut. Theo was making lunch as usual, so Serena headed inside to put her haul away.

When she was alone underground, she murmured softly, "Alright. I’ll get that book. However, only the one that contains the information about the wheat."

Because as much as it would’ve been nice to get all the books, she just couldn’t. She wanted to have some coins on hand in case she ever had an emergency. And this didn’t count as an emergency.

"Understood." Liz said. "Confirm Harvest Season Foraging and Cookery Book purchase for 150 coins."

"Confirm." Serena said as she thought, So, the books are based by season then... Must mean there’s four of them.

"Purchase confirmed." Liz stated, eyes flashing for a moment. "The purchased book has been added to your subspace. Your new coin total is 520 coins."

Serena nodded her head in understanding and finished packing away the long, orange squash before heading upstairs. She took the wheat stalks with her, deciding to just give them to the wild birds.

Perhaps they’d eat the whole thing while she figured out how to properly harvest and process them using her latest purchase.
