Chapter 100: Find my husband

Lara was losing her mind.

"What do you mean, you still haven’t found him?" she snapped at Lazarus.

The bodyguard grimaced and took a step back.

"I am so sorry, ma’am. I honestly have no idea which hospital the boss was transferred to. I have all of my boys out there, looking for him. Please, just be patient with me. I’ll find him very soon," Lazarus responded in a reassuring manner, but Lara was too worried about her husband and too pissed about the entire situation, to care.

So she glared at Lazarus.

"I am at the risk of losing my mind. It doesn’t help that these foolish doctors think I am too delicate to be released. I need you to find Curtis. Find my husband. From this moment onwards, don’t do anything. Don’t even dare pause to take a breath. FIND MY HUSBAND," she ordered.

Her voice had a sharp edge to it, and she sounded really angry. But underneath all that anger was fear.

Mind numbing, soul crushing fear.

Lazarus nodded curtly at her words.

"Yes ma’am," he said, saluted and walked out of her hospital room.

The moment the door closed behind him, Lara slumped back on to get to the hospital bed, defeated.

It had been a week, seven whole days, since Lisa transferred Curtis out of this hospital and to God knows where.

During the stretch of the week, Lara had almost lost her mind.

She missed her husband so much. The ache to see him grew stronger with each breath she took, and longing slammed into her like an avalanche.

Coma or not, Lara needed to see her husband.

But because of her mother-in -law’s wickedness, she couldn’t.

And Lara had never hated Lisa more.

Her phone buzzed, indicating a text message, and Lara’s heart leaped to her throat as she picked it up.

Her first thought was that the text message was from Laura, but when she saw that it was just a useless marketing advertisement, disappointment wove through her bones.

Of course it wasn’t Laura. Why would it be? After all, Curtis’s sister had ignored all of her text messages all week.

At first Lara had thought that the woman had no time and was busy trying to hold her mother off or something, but when days passed and she still didn’t hear anything from her sister in law, Lara had come to a conclusion.

Laura had lied to her.

She had promised to help Lara in her fight against Lisa, but all she had managed to do was secure a secret meeting for her to see her husband for a few minutes and nothing more.

Anger burned in Lara’s veins.

She should have known. She should have seen the lie in Laura’s unspoken words.

But it was too late. Lara had trusted Laura, and the woman had stabbed her in the back.

The door to the ward opened, halting Lara’s thoughts.

She looked up and came face to face with the only friend she had left, Kayla.

A smile split Lara’s face into two as she saw her friend, and Kayla grinned at her in return.

"Hey girl. What’s up," Kayla said in the form of a greeting as she walked in. Lara stood up to hug her.

When they disengaged, Kayla looked around.

"Where’s your husband? I was expecting to see him here," she teased, her eyebrows slightly raised.

At the mention of Curtis, Lara slumped back on her bed, and there was a sad look on her face.

"I don’t know where he is."

Kayla’s eyebrows shot upwards in surprise.

"What? What exactly does that mean?" she asked, her voice slightly high as she got those words out.

Lara sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, saying nothing.

"Come on, baby. I know you were both admitted here after the accident. I was going to come and see you earlier but work has been so draining. Today was the only day I could spare. So if that was some sort of joke please stop it. It’s not funny," Kayla stated when Lara said nothing.

Lara reached out to hold her friend’s hand.

"It’s not a joke, Kayla. I genuinely have no idea where my husband is," she repeated.

"What happened?" Kayla asked. Lara took a deep breath, and told Kayla everything that happened between her and her mother in law. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

Lara told her about the hate, and the discrimination. She told her about how she almost died from being poisoned, how Curtis had chosen her over them.

She explained how the accident happened and how Lisa had taken total control over everything.

Kayla’s jaw hung open as she listened, and she was unable to believe her ears.

By the time Lara was done with the tale, Kayla was gobsmacked. Stunned. Utterly, absolutely surprised.

"What. The. Hell?" was all she could say.

Lara nodded at her friend’s reaction. "Right? I am so... exhausted. Lazarus has been out there, going from one hospital to the other. I genuinely hate that woman. I have no idea why she had to take things this far," she explained.

Kayla squeezed her hand sympathetically.

"That is a lot. I am so sorry you had to go through all of that. Really. It sounds...awful," Kayla said softly.

"Believe me, it is."

"Do you mind if I like...did something to help? I know a few people who work in large, expensive hospitals. I can ask around to see if your husband is in one of them," Kayla suggested.

Lara’s eyes lit up in excitement.

"Really? Oh my God. That would be so great. I would appreciate that so much, Kayla. Thank you," she stated as she hugged her friend.

Kayla hugged her back. "You’re welcome, love. I am happy to help."

Before either of them could say or do anything else, the door to the ward opened.

Lara turned towards the sound, and she expected Lazarus to be the one standing in the doorway.

But her expectations died and her blood turned into ice as she saw who it was.

Tolu.

What was more horrifying however, was that Lara’s ex best friend was covered in blood.
