Chapter 102: She didn’t stab me

Lara’s heart pounded in her chest.

Kayla moved closer until there was no more space to move, and it was obvious that she was scared too.

Tolu smiled at the fear in their faces, at how they had both gone pale with horror.

"Now, I didn’t expect to meet this one here," she said, gesturing towards Kayla, "and I am a little bit confused about what to do with her. I don’t know if I can take you both at the same time, but maybe I should just let her go. What do you think, Lara? Do you want this pretty one to die with you?" she asked.

Lara shook her head and stood up. She was trying to find a way to get off the bed and away from Tolu as fast as possible.

"You have gone mad. Absolutely insane. First off, I don’t believe everything you just said. You can’t have killed Mike. He’s your husband for fucks sake. And how the hell did you get in here with no one stopping you while looking like that? I really need to know." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Lara was trying to get her to talk, while hoping that the police would get to them as soon as they could.

Tolu said nothing for a long while, and for a moment, Lara thought she wasn’t going to take the bait and keep talking.

But she did.

"I killed Mike. Believe it or not, but his body is still at home, bleeding and unmoving. Don’t underestimate me, Lara. Mike did too. He thought I wasn’t going to stab him like I said. He thought I was kidding. Do not make the same mistake," she warned.

Lara gently got off the bed. Her hand was still in Kayla’s grip, and they stood side by side.

"Don’t think you can run away from me, darling. I don’t give a shit about Kayla. She can run if she wants to, but you...you won’t be going anywhere. Now stay still and listen. You asked how I was able to walk in here looking like this.

Come on, sweetheart. This is a hospital. They rush people in here everyday. It was easy to pretend to be a family member of a car accident victim covered in blood," she shrugged.

Lara opened her mouth to speak again, but Tolu waved her hands, silencing her.

"That is enough. I do not want to hear any questions from you. I came here to finish a job and I will not waste any more time," she deadpanned.

Then before either Kayla nor Lara could do anything, Tolu charged at them.

Lara, in an attempt to save Kayla from the glint of the dagger that had suddenly materialised in Tolu’s hand, grabbed Kayla and pushed her out of Tolu’s way.

Kayla stumbled on the bed, and her eyes were wide with horror as Tolu closed the gap between her and Lara.

The knife disappeared in the direction of Lara’s stomach, and Lara’s jaw dropped open at the contact.

Blood started to drip onto the floor.

Tolu grinned, her blood flecked teeth shining in Lara’s face.

Kayla, at the sight of the blood dripping on the floor, yelled. Tolu and Lara were standing too close for her to see what happened, but from where Kayla was standing, it looked as though Lara had been stabbed.

The hospital door slammed open, and policemen rushed in.

"Put your hands in the air everybody!"

The wave of relief that slammed into Kayla at the sight of the officers made her knees buckle.

As two officers rushed over to restrain Tolu, Kayla rushed to her friend’s side. There were tears in her eyes as she knelt before Lara.

"Are you okay?" she whispered. A policeman was speaking, but neither Lara nor Kayla was listening to him.

Lara smiled at her friend. There were tears in her eyes too, but there was also...hope.

"She didn’t stab me," Lara whispered. And as if on cue, they both looked down to see the source of the blood.

Lara had somehow managed to stop the knife by holding it. The knife had sliced her hand deeply, and pain was slushing through her body.

Lara’s vision blurred as she rapidly lost blood, and panic crawled into Kayla’s bones.

"Somebody call a doctor. She’s losing a lot of blood," she yelled as Lara’s eyes fluttered close.

A small crowd had gathered in front of the open door, and Lara’s doctor rushed in with nurses in tow.

They took Lara off Kayla’s hands, and she could only watch as they tried to stabilize her.

A nurse turned around and asked everyone to leave. Kayla however, was given leave to stay since she was obviously shaken.

A nurse led her to a couch in the farthest corner in the room and handed her a cup of hot cocoa and a blanket.

A policeman approached Kayla.

"Hi, ma’am. I know you’re very shaken from everything that just happened, and I am so sorry about that. But we need your statement please. Can you please explain how this whole thing started?" he asked gently.

Kayla closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Then she started to speak. When she was done, the police officer thanked her.

"You’re going to have to come to the station, please. But you can make that visit tomorrow. We still need you to make an official presence," he said.

Kayla nodded and waved him away, her gaze on Lara and the doctor who was still moving frantically around to save her.

Lara could have died. The knife could have gone through her pregnant belly and killed her.

The fact that Lara had come so close to death shook Kayla up so bad, and the tears she had been suppressing finally rolled down her eyes.

If Lara had died and Tolu had escaped, what would she have done?

As the only witness in the room, would she have been arrested for the murder instead?

Would Curtis have had her jailed?

The thought of Curtis made Kayla remember what Lara had said before Tolu had stormed in and interrupted them.

Curtis was still missing, and without stopping to give herself a chance to breathe, Kayla brought out her phone and started to place calls.

She needed to find Lara’s husband.
