A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 104: Get your lawyer ready
A cold, killing calm settled on Curtis. His eyes didn’t widen at the doctor’s words, nor did he say anything to reveal.
Instead he leaned back on his bed and closed his eyes.
"Please, go on with your checkup, doctor," he stated calmly.
Lisa exchanged a confused glance with her daughter. When the doctor revealed that they were in France, the both of them had been expecting him to flare up. They had expected him to explode and yell in their faces, to tell them that they had no right to move him away from his wife and to another country completely.
But Curtis did none of this. He said nothing either, and his eyes, when he opened them again, were two pools of blankness.
Laura was scared.
Curtis had never ever been this calm whenever he was supposed to be angry before. His temper was very hot, and everyone in the family knew better than doing things that would make him mad.
But now that Lisa had done what could perhaps be qualified as the worst thing she could ever do concerning his married life, Laura was terrified that he wasn’t reacting the way they expected him to.
And Laura knew that him not doing anything was far worse than any anger eruption.
Lisa, on the other hand, was only slightly scared. She had been bracing herself for the harsh words and hurtful statements, but when he said nothing, Lisa had begun to feel...hope.
Maybe he was finally seeing sense with what she had been trying to tell him all these while. Maybe he had finally come to the realisation that she might be telling the truth about Lara leaving him.
Or maybe he was just tired of the back and forth and decided that staying with his family was better.
Or maybe...the accident had shifted something in his brain, and he was already back to his senses.
Whatever it was, Lisa was happy when he remained calm throughout the check up. When Curtis didn’t yank his hand away from her grip when she sat down at his bedside, a smile bloomed on her face.
Curtis seemed to have given up on his wife. A thrill of excitement made Lisa shiver slightly, and she instantly began to think of other suitable women that would make good wives for him.
The doctor, at the end of the check up, stepped back slightly and smiled at Curtis. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"Mr. Rodney, I am happy to tell you that all is fine with you. The surgery spot healed nicely, and there are no signs of any growing complications. I think we should monitor your vitals and confirm that they are stable for a few more days, then you will be discharged," the man explained.
Lisa beamed. Her son was fine, and in a few days, would be discharged. She felt as though she was going to combust from how happy she was.
Curtis’s expression however, betrayed nothing. Instead he turned to his mother and spoke.
"Get out. I want to have a private conversation with the doctor," he ordered.
Lisa raised her eyebrows at him, but Laura was already walking towards the door.
"But, honey, he just said..." Lisa started to say, but Curtis cut her off.
"Out, mother. Now," he snapped.
She sighed and walked out after her mother.
Then Curtis turned to face the doctor. "I want to be discharged today," he deadpanned.
Confused, the doctor frowned at him.
"But I just told you that you need to be under careful observation for a few more days. We need to be sure that your vitals are..."
Curtis raised a hand, shutting the man up instantly.
"I have a heavily pregnant wife back at home worried sick about me. I have been away from her for too long, and I need to go home. I need to leave. Now. I wasn’t asking for your permission. I was telling you to process the paperwork and let me leave as soon as possible. So save the explanation and get to work," he growled.
Then as an afterthought, Curtis added, "Please."
The man stared at him for a long moment before he nodded. "Fine. I’ll have you discharged in a few minutes. But please, if anything happens at all, you have to go to a hospital immediately," he stated.
Curtis nodded his agreement as well as gratitude and the doctor nodded back at him before walking out. Lisa and Laura walked back in.
"What was that about?" Lisa asked.
Curtis ignored her.
"Is something else wrong with you that I don’t know about?" she asked again.
But cold, curt silence was the only thing that radiated from Curtis.
"Come on, love. Don’t start another one of your attitude tantrums. Just tell me what you guys talked about. Are you okay? Is everything fine?"
Further silence.
Curtis stood up and started to undress, striping away the hospital scrubs. He turned to his sister. "Where are my clothes?"
Laura, who was still too terrified of the blankness in his face, gently walked to the closet situated at the far end of the hospital room.
She opened it, grabbed some clothes, and walked back to hand it over to Curtis.
Lisa narrowed her eyes at him.
"Where are you going? You heard the doctor, you still have to be observed for a couple of days. Why the hell are you getting dressed?" she quipped.
Curtis did not do as much as spare her a glance.
Lisa suddenly had a bad feeling about what was going on. But before she could say anything, the door opened and the doctor walked back in.
"Your discharge is successful, Mr. Rodney. You are free to leave now."
"Thank you, Doctor," Curtis responded. The man walked out and Lisa walked to the door, barring her son’s way.
"You are not leaving this room," she stated sharply.
Curtis ignored her again as he grabbed his phone from the bedside table and glanced at his sister.
"Did you have anything to do with this?" he asked.
Laura instantly shook her head to show that she was innocent.
He nodded. "Good."
Then he turned to face his mother. "Get your lawyer ready," he stated firmly.
Lisa’s jaw dropped open at the implication in his words.
A lawyer?
"You’re going to sue me?!" she shrieked.
Curtis said nothing as he walked past her and out of the hospital.
He needed to find his wife.
