Chapter 123: It’s weird

Laura and Curtis drove over to Kayla’s house immediately. Curtis’s muscles was tight with apprehension and panic, even though he was trying so hard not to let it show.

Laura tried to calm him down. "It’s fine. She will be fine. She’s probably just somewhere. We’ll find her," she said in a reassuring manner.

But her words did nothing to alleviate Curtis’s rapidly growing stress.

Still he said nothing. Few minutes later, they parked in front of Kayla’s house. The lady was already waiting outside for them, and the sheer panic on her face made Curtis heart stutter to a stop in his chest.

She ran to meet them halfway.

"I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. When I got back from work, I saw Lisa leaving. I didn’t even know that Lara had let her in, so I offered to open the door and invite her in for a cup of coffee. But then she told me that Lara already invited her in, and that they just finished having a conversation. Which I thought was weird, because Lara wasn’t willing to talk to her yesterday."

Curtis heart squeezed tight in his chest, but he said nothing as he listened to her ramble.

"Lisa left, and I went inside. Lara had a weird look on her face, but when I asked what was doing on, she said nothing. She insisted that she was fine. I decided not to push," Kayla paused and took a rattling breath.

She was clearly worried about the disappearance of her friend, and Laura wondered if Lara knew how many people were out here, worrying their asses out about her.

"So she just... stood up and left?" Curtis asked. Kayla shook her head at the question.

"No. I left her in the living room, and I asked her if she wanted to eat takeout or pizza. She said she wasn’t hungry. When I walked back out, she was gone. Her cell phone was on the couch and she didn’t even leave a note. I thought she went for a walk or something. But it’s been hours now. And I...I don’t know what to do."

Curtis ran a hand through his hair as he cursed inwardly. Before he, or anyone, could say something however, a car screeched a stop behind them.

And Lisa came running out.

She ran towards them frantically, her expression scrunched up with worry.

"Where did she go? Is she back? Had anyone found her?" Curtis’s mother asked as she stopped before them, panting.

Kayla shook her head. "We don’t where she is."

Lisa’s brows furrowed into a frown. "But it doesn’t make sense. Why would she leave all of a sudden? It’s weird," she mused.

Her words sparked something in Curtis, and he turned to glare at her.

"You. She left because of you. I don’t know what the fuck you said to her, i don’t know what you thought you were doing, but this is all your fault!" he snapped.

Lisa took a stunned step back, and her jaw hung open in surprise.

"What...what are you talking about? I was just trying to help! I swear I didn’t say anything to upset her," she countered.

Curtis snarled in her face.

"And how would you know that? How would you know if something you said upset her or not? You’ve been her enemy for so long. You think she’s just going to believe whatever bullshit you told her?!"

Curtis was yelling now, and Lisa’s face has turned bone white. She trembled under the weight of her son’s rage, but Curtis wasn’t done yet.

"You scared her. You scared her away. She was here because she probably wanted me to know that she was safe even if she wasn’t talking to me. But now you’ve freaked her out and she’s gone. She is fucking missing. And as always, it. is. your. goddamned. fault."

Tears slid down Lisa’s face at the harshness of his words. Laura stepped forward and threw a warning glance at him.

"Come on, Curtis. Don’t be ridiculous. Those words are too harsh. You shouldn’t have said all those things," she chastised.

He turned away from them, all of them, a pained expression on his face.

"Fuck!"

Lisa’s lips wobbled as she tried to push back tears, but no matter how rapidly she blinked, the tears refused to be pushed away.

They pushed back, and unable to stop herself, she started to cry. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

With tears streaming down her face, she turned to stare at Laura.

"I told you this was a bad idea. I told you that he wasn’t going to believe that I was only trying to help. I told you, Laura."

And without waiting for a response, she turned around, walked back to her car, and drove off.

Laura turned angry eyes to her brother.

"Seriously, Curtis? What the actual fuck is your problem? She was just trying to help! You had not right to speak to her that way!" she snapped.

Curtis’s hands curled into fists as he responded.

"She had no right to butt into by life! Not anymore! She lost that privilege a long time ago and nothing is going to change that!"

Laura ran a frustrated hand through her hair and turned away from him, irritated beyond measure.

Kayla looked between them, unsure of what to do about the tension between them.

Then she spoke to Curtis. "I don’t know where else Lara might be. I have not the smallest idea. She...she has no one left, and as far as I know, no place to go. Lara could be anywhere right now. What if...what if she’s not safe?" she croaked.

Curtis looked as though he was being tortured. No one knew where his wife was, and it was driving him batshit crazy.

"I’ll have my bodyguards combing the entire country for her, but right now, I have to get back to the kids," he responded, his dejection seeping into his words.

"If either of you find her first, please get in touch with the rest of us," Laura stated.

Then she left, hailing a taxi to take her back home. She was too mad at her brother to let him drive her back, but Laura knew that no matter how angry she was, she still had to help to find Lara.

And just like that, the four people who loved and cared about Lara Edwin started to search for her.

The search began, but no one knew how long it was going to take.
