Chapter 129: Finally home

All Curtis wanted to do was drop his kids off at Laura’s before going on a two day business trip.

In fact, his private jet was already waiting for him. All he had to do was drop Ryan and Amelia before leaving.

But the moment he got to the door and heard Lara’s voice, a part of him knew that the trip was already cancelled. He hadn’t even wanted to stay and hear whatever it was they were talking about.

A part of him had wanted to turn around and leave. But how could he, when her words floated directly into his ears and seared themselves into his brain?

How could he, when she was currently staring at him like he was the only thing left in the world? Like he was her lifeline in a sea where she was currently drowning.

"Hi," Lara managed to say even though her voice was choked up. There were tears in her eyes and her voice. And the sound of her speaking, of saying a word directed to him after weeks of not having any contact with her, broke the spell that was over Curtis.

Without saying a word, he strode into his sister’s house, handed the kids into Laura’s awaiting hands, and turned to face Lara.

Then he crushed her into a hug.

Lara exploded in his arms at the contact. Tears wracked her body as she sobbed, and he held her like she was the most precious person in the world.

Which she was. To him.

Laura left to give them some privacy, and Curtis held his wife for a long, long time. He didn’t give a damn about the business trip, not anymore.

Not when his wife was back into his life.

After several long minutes, Lara finally managed to calm herself down. She pulled away from the hug and looked Curtis in the eye.

"I’m sorry. I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you, and I had no idea that you guys were going to find me. But I shouldn’t even have left in the first place. I just... I’m sorry," she whispered.

Curtis gave her a small smile as he leaned down to kiss her on the forehead.

"It’s alright. I heard everything you said through the door. You don’t have to explain anything to me again," he responded.

And for the first time in a long while, Lara smiled. She smiled at her husband, at the man she now knew to be the love of her life. She smiled at him with warmth in her heart, and he smiled back.

Finally, all was right with their world again.

"Thank you," Curtis uttered. Lara stared at him, confused.

"For what?"

"For coming back to me. I don’t know whatever it was that my mum said to you, but I’ll like to apologise on her behalf. You know how she is, always making things hard for me. But I’m glad that you’re back now, baby. I really am. You have no idea how fucking relieved I am."

His words pulled a bigger smile out of Lara, but there was a statement that didn’t sit right with her.

"Why are you apologising on your mum’s behalf? She didn’t do anything wrong."

A startled expression crossed Curtis’s face. "Oh? But she came to see you, right?"

Lara laughed at the expression on his face and the obvious misunderstanding.

"Curtis, your mother is the reason my memory came back. At least that’s what I think. She didn’t make things hard for either of us. Her visit really opened up my eyes. And to be honest, even if I didn’t end up remembering everything that has ever happened between us, I’d have come back to you. Just because of the things she said to me."

The startled expression on Curtis’s face morphed into something bigger. A mixture of genuine surprise and confusion.

"Are you... serious about what you’re saying?" he asked, unable to believe his ears.

Lara placed a hand on her chest. "With all of my heart. So even though I remember everything she has done to keep us apart, I don’t think I care about that anymore. Things change. People change. She has changed. And I am so happy for her."

Curtis shook his head, amazed. But he didn’t dispute Lara’s words. To forgive his mother, he would have to have a one on one conversation with her.

He would assess her directly to see if she had truly changed. Only then would he forgive her.

But right now, he had better things to do. Like spending time with his wife.

His beautiful, absolutely gorgeous, amazing wife.

"Come on. Let’s get you home," he stated. His heart was suddenly lighter than it had been in a long time, and the weight that had been hanging over his head since she left had somehow vanished.

Lara reached out for his hand, clasping it in hers. "Let’s get the kids first," she uttered.

Laura looked up at them with twinkling eyes as they grabbed their babies strollers. She stood up and hugged Lara.

"Thank you for coming back."

Lara hugged her back. "Thank you for not giving up on me."

As they made their way out of Laura’s home, Lara’s eyes misted with tears. She was eventually back where she belonged. And even though Lara knew she shouldn’t have left, there was nothing she could do about it now.

Some things cannot just be avoided. It had to happen, as it was fated.

The drive home was quiet. Peaceful. There was a lot to say, and there was nothing to say at the same time.

Ryan and Amelia played in the back, and Lara’s hands were firmly held in Curtis’s grip. He wasn’t ready to let her slip away from him, not again.

And Lara had no intentions of leaving him ever again either.

When they got home, they took the kids to their room.

And without having to say a word, Lara undressed. She offered herself up to him.

Curtis accepted her offer. They made slow, passionate love. And as Lara rode down from the high, she smiled and leaned down to kiss her husband.

Home.

She was finally home.
