A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 46: Is the baby mine?
Mike’s eyes trailed up and down on Lara’s body, and Lara barely managed to suppress the shiver of disgust that rolled through her at the look on his face.
Tolu smirked and stepped closer, a savage grin on her face.
"And what, may I ask, are you doing here, Lara?" Tolu asked. Lara folded her arms over her chest and held the gaze of her former best friend.
"I don’t see how that is any of your business, Tolu. You really should learn how to stop poking your nose in other people’s business," she snapped.
There was a warning bite in Lara’s voice that didn’t sit well with Tolu. And the other woman stepped closer menacingly.
"You’ve got a tongue on you now, yeah? I can see that from the way you are speaking to me like I am your mate. Have you forgotten your place?" Tolu spat with barely restrained anger.
Fear tried to rear its head inside Lara, but she stamped down that feeling. She was done with letting these people treat her like she was nothing but trash.
"Don’t you ever get tired of doing the same thing over and over, Tolu? Don’t you? This whole drama happening between us is starting to get tiring for me. I have nothing new to say to you. You have no business with me. Stop trying to start an unnecessary fight," Lara stated, waving her arms around to emphasize her point.
Tolu’s anger flared.
She had expected Lara to cower and run away from them with her tail between her legs, but Lara didn’t look like she cared.
It made Tolu enraged, and she was about to respond with a scorching remark when Mike spoke first, interrupting her.
"Hold up. You’re pregnant?" he asked, and the disbelief he was feeling was so evident in his voice.
Tolu, taken aback by what he said, gasped at his words. She had been so busy trying to rile Lara up that she didn’t notice the small bulge protruding from Lara’s stomach.
Her eyes trailed down to stare at Lara’s stomach, and sure enough, there was a noticeable bulge beneath her clothes.
A mixture of shock and disbelief slammed into Tolu like an avalanche.
"What?!" she gasped.
Mike, who shared the same sentiment as Tolu, kept his gaze on his ex wife.
"Answer my question, Lara. You are pregnant, are you not?" he quipped.
Lara felt a thrill run down her spine at how shocked the both of them were. They had expected her to remain childless for the rest of her life, but now, their evil plan had blown up in their faces.
With a smug look on her face, Lara met Mike’s glare.
"Of course I am. You can see it as clearly as I do. Stop acting like a goddamn fool with no eyes," she snapped.
The insult washed over Mike, but he didn’t really care.
What he was worried about was that his fears had turned out to be right.
Lara was really pregnant.
And that was supposed to be impossible. It made no sense, seeing that her stomach was already protruding with a baby.
He had done everything he could to render her childless and useless. But apparently, his efforts weren’t enough.
Rage started to boil in his veins.
"How?" he asked, too pissed to form full answer coherent sentences.
Lara tapped her foot on the elevator floor impatiently.
"How what? You’re going to have to give me more than that," she responded in a bored voice.
She was clearly enjoying how discomfited Mike looked, and the veins threatening to burst out of Tolu’s forehead made her giddy.
"How are you pregnant? You are not supposed to be pregnant and you know that. So drop the fool’s act and answer his fucking question," Tolu yelled.
Lara cocked her head to the side.
"And what exactly do you mean by that? I am not supposed to be pregnant? It is none of your damn business what I do with my body," she yelled back.
Mike raised his hand up and stopped Tolu from speaking further. There was a heavy question sitting at the tip of his tongue.
And he had to ask. If his guess was true, Mike knew that he would be truly and absolutely fucked up.
"Is the baby mine?" he asked, keeping his voice low.
Stunned by the suddenness of the question, Lara laughed. The laughter flowed out of her in a torrent, and Mike’s anger condensed the more she mocked him.
"Excuse me? You think I am pregnant with your baby?" Lara scoffed and clapped her hands together before she went on.
"Come on, Mike. That’s ridiculous. This baby is mine. Who it belongs to and whoever the father is, is none of your business. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go," she stated firmly.
Without waiting for any of them to come up with a response, Lara pushed past the both of them as the elevator came to a stop.
She was almost out of the door when Mike’s arm reached out to grab her wrist.
Lara tried to ease her wrist from his grip, but his hold was too tight.
"What do you think you’re doing? Let me go!" she snapped.
"Hold on. What in the name of God is that?" Tolu exclaimed as she stepped forward. She was staring at the same thing Mike was staring at too.
Lara’s eyes automatically followed their collective gaze, and she eventually realised what they were both looking at.
Her wedding ring.
The one Curtis bought for her.
"Where did you get that, Lara?" Mike asked. His voice was dangerously low, and Lara felt a shiver of fear in her darkest corner of her mind.
She yanked her hand away from his grip.
"It’s none of your damn business!" she snapped, her eyes glinting dangerously.
"Did you steal it?" Tolu interjected.
Lara shook her head at her ex best friend.
"You think I would stoop as low as stealing a wedding ring? For what? To make you guys jealous? Get the fuck over yourself, both of you. I am married and pregnant with my husband. My life is none of your fucking concern. Stop bothering me and focus on yourselves!" she yelled at the both of them before storming away.
Tolu and Mike exchanged bewildered glances.
Mike’s thoughts seemed to be running wild in his head. What just happened?
His ex wife was married and pregnant, for another man?
It made no sense. Their divorce happened not that long ago. She could not have met and fallen in love with another man that fast.
Which left Mike with just one explanation. Lara had been cheating on him all along, even when they were still married.
Rage bloomed across his chest as that realisation dawned on him. He was going to make her pay for what she did.
