A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 57: Please come back to me
Lisa was in her room, enjoying a tall and chilled glass of wine when her bedroom door was slammed open.
Curtis stormed in. Lisa smiled at the sight of her son.
"Well hello there, my darling son. How are you? It is so nice for you to come over for a visit. I have missed you so much," she said sweetly as she stood up.
Lisa held her arms out for a hug, but Curtis ignored her. Instead, he planted his feet a few feet away from her and glared down at his mother.
"Why are you playing games with me, Mother?" he asked. His voice came out in a low rasp, and there was so much anger, so much venom in it that Lisa knew it was time to drop her sweet act.
Her smile slid away from her face as she responded.
"What are you talking about?" she asked. Curtis could feel his jaw grinding together, and it was taking all of his willpower to not break stuff.
"You know exactly well what I meant. What the fuck is wrong with you? Why can you not be happy for me? Why the fuck are you so hell-bent on making me miserable?" he snapped, his eyes burning with the weight of his anger.
Lisa sighed.
"I am sorry for poisoning your wife, Curtis. But I needed to do it for you to see. All of these are for you. That woman needs to be taken away from you, out of your life."
The moment those words left Lisa’s lips, Curtis paled. His heart stopped beating, and his hands slowly curled into fists.
He knew that it was someone who asked Benny to poison his wife, but Curtis had no idea that the person was his mother. He had originally thought that it was Tolu, and was already planning to make that bitch pay for it.
His reason for driving over to confront Lisa was to ask her to take down the article, but here she was, confessing to the biggest sin of all.
Curtis took a step closer to his mother. "What did you just say? You were the one who asked Benny to poison my wife?" he asked, his voice coming out in a rasp.
Lisa realised her mistake. She had no idea that what he was asking her about was the article, and now she had unintentionally blabbered about being the mastermind behind the poison.
She cursed inwardly and tried to backtrack, but it was too late.
He waved his phone at her.
"You were the one who is responsible for that damn article too, right?" he asked. Lisa swallowed but said nothing.
All of her secrets were out in the open now. There was no point in denying any of them.
Curtis let out a scoff of disbelief. He knew his mother was not satisfied with his marriage to Lara, but there was a large part of him that was hoping that she would change.
He had expected better from his mother, and she had ultimately disappointed him.
Curtis felt... betrayed. His heart was hurting so bad that it was hard to breathe, and he could feel the sting of tears at the back of his eyes.
But he didn’t cry. Crying was a sign of weakness, and Curtis had not shed a tear since he was ten years old.
He took a deep breath before he spoke again.
"Before today comes to an end, make sure that each and every single one of that article is taken down. I don’t want to see even the smallest trace of it, and I will not hesitate to make you pay if you refuse to listen to me," he stated.
His voice sounded calm, but he was not. Lisa stepped forward and tried to speak.
"Curtis please. For me to go to these lengths for you, you have to know that this is important to me. Very important. Let that woman go. I’ll give her all the money she could possibly want. Just please, please let her go. She is not good enough for you," she pleaded.
Curtis shook his head at his mother.
"You tried to kill my wife. My wife, mother. Lara could have died. She could have lost my babies, and you knew all of these. Yet that didn’t stop you from trying to kill her. I have never been so disappointed, so betrayed in my entire life," he responded quietly.
His words were laced in pain and it pierced Lisa’s heart.
Her lips parted as she started to say something, but Curtis interrupted her.
"I want absolutely nothing to go with you from this moment onwards, Mother. From now on, you cease to exist to me," he deadpanned.
Lisa’s jaw dropped to the floor, and Curtis walked out without saying another word.
He ran into his father who was just walking in, presumably coming back from work.
Curtis’ father smiled at the sight of his son and slowed down, obviously wanting to speak with him.
But Curtis just walked past his father without any form of acknowledgement.
They had tried to kill his wife, and that was his last straw.
He wanted absolutely nothing to do with either of them.
Curtis drove back to this hospital with a ringing silence in his head. Before he left to go and see his mother, he had waited to confirm that Lara was fine.
The poison was out of her body, and it hadn’t done too much damage. If Lazarus had hesitated before taking her to the hospital, she would have died.
Curtis knew that he now owed Lazarus for saving Lara’s life as well as his kids.
The babies were unharmed too, but Lara’s immune system had taken a hit from trying to protect her.
She was now in a coma, and the doctors were not sure about when she would wake up.
But she was alive, and Curtis was grateful for that.
Lazarus was waiting for him at the hospital. "Her room is right at the end of the hall," Curtis’ bodyguard stated quietly.
Curtis nodded and started to walk towards Lara’s ward.
"We have caught Benny. She was running with her granddaughter. I have both of them detained with Tolu Greg."
Curtis stopped walking. He turned to face his bodyguard.
"You detained a child?" his voice was cold. Sharp.
"I apologise. I didn’t know what to do with her."
"Release the grandchild. She’s just a kid. You’re on babysitting duties from now on. I’ll call you if I need you, but for now, I’ll be in the hospital with Lara until she wakes up," Curtis ordered.
Lazarus nodded and walked away immediately, leaving his boss to make his way to Lara’s room.
Curtis took Lara’s cold hand in his.
"I promise not to leave you alone until you wake up, Lara. So please, please come back to me."
