Chapter 95: Why should I trust?

Lisa was happy. She had not been this happy in a long while, but as the door closed and left Lara outside, at the memory of the look on Lara’s face when those bodyguards had dragged her away, Lisa felt as though she could fly.

Finally, she had a reason to get rid of Lara.

When Lisa had first heard about the accident, she had been so scared. Her first thought was that her one and only son was going to die.

But when the Doctor had walked out of the operating room to tell them that he had survived the surgery, Lisa had been so relieved.

The fact that Curtis was in a coma didn’t bother her. She knew that he was going to be fine.

But what pleased her the most was the fact that Lisa had seen this as an opportunity to get rid of Lara.

Lisa knew that if she was able to stop Lara from seeing Curtis, if she was able to stop the gold digger from clawing her way into Curtis’s hospital room, then it would be easier for her to separate them.

All Lisa had to do was to convince Curtis once he woke up that Lara had not even bothered to come and see him since the accident.

Lisa was going to tell her son that Lara had ran away as soon as she heard about the coma, that Lara hadn’t cared about him enough to stay with him in the hospital room.

Lisa knew that if she was able to convince her son to believe her, then Curtis would eventually have to let Lara go.

Lisa’s lips spread into a wide smile. Her plan was solid, and it had a very good chance of working.

The door opened, halting her thoughts and Laura walked in.

Lisa smiled at her daughter.

"Where have you been? You’ve been gone for so long," she stated.

Laura gave her mother a grim smile as she walked towards her.

"Sorry, mum. I was speaking with dad. He says he’s going to be here as soon as he wraps up his meeting," she explained.

Lisa nodded as Laura sat down, and Curtis’s sister looked around before she spoke again.

"Uhm, mum. Where is Lara?" she asked.

Lisa narrowed her eyes at the question.

"Why are you asking me that sort of question? How the hell am I supposed to know where the bitch is?" she quipped.

Laura shrugged, trying to look nonchalant even though her heart was racing in her chest.

She knew that Lara had come in here earlier, but seeing as her brother’s wife wasn’t in the room, Laura knew that something had happened between her mother and Lara.

Laura just needed to know what happened.

"Nothing. I’m just.. curious. I mean, she should at least come and see Curtis, right?"

Laura was treading on thin ice. She didn’t want to make her mother pissed, but she was still worried about her brother’s wife.

Lisa rolled her eyes.

"I don’t care if she comes to see him or not. To be honest, I do not particularly care. Let her stay wherever the hell she is. As long as she doesn’t try to do anything foolish, she can rot in hell for all I care," she shrugged.

Laura heaved a deep sigh. She wanted to insist and ask her mother what truly happened, but she was too scared to do so.

So she changed the topic.

"What’s with the men standing guard at the door?" she asked.

Lisa beamed at the question.

"Those are the bodyguards I hired," she stated.

Laura raised her eyebrows.

"Why did you hire bodyguards, mum? What do we need then for?" she asked.

Lisa shrugged again. Laura thought her mother looked too comfortable. It was as though she was planning something.

"The bodyguards are to protect us, my love. Your brother is in a very delicate position, and he needs to be safe. Protected," she explained.

Laura smiled at her mother, even though her mind spun with different thoughts.

"Come on, mum. You don’t have to lie to me. I know you. I am your daughter. And I think the reason why those guys are outside is because you want to keep Lara out," Laura prompted.

Lisa’s smile dropped.

"And what if that’s the truth? What are you going to do about it?" she snapped at her daughter.

Laura reached out to hold her mother’s hand.

"Come on, mum. Don’t take that tone with me. I have thought about what you said, and I think you’re right. I don’t have to feel sorry for that woman. I don’t even have to sympathise with her. So yeah, if you don’t want her to be in here, then she won’t. I support your decision," she said kindly.

Lisa’s smile crept back on her lips.

"That’s my girl. I always knew I could count on you. Thank you, darling" Lisa said.

Laura smiled back at her mother. They sat in silence for a long while, watching Curtis’s heart rise and fall in tandem.

After a long while, Laura excused herself and left the ward. Then she made her way to Lara’s ward.

Lara was in the room with Lazarus, the bodyguard, and they both looked up as she walked in.

Laura stopped a few feet away from Lara. Her brother’s wife had red and puffy eyes and it was evident that Lara had been crying.

"What are you doing here?" Lara croaked suspiciously.

"I am so sorry, Lara. Really. I...I tried to speak to my mother, but she is so adamant. She doesn’t want you anywhere near Curtis, and well, I am sorry," Laura said softly.

Lara sighed and looked away. Lazarus’s jaw was set in a thin line, but the bodyguard said nothing.

When Lara didn’t acknowledge Laura’s words, Curtis’s sister went on.

"I’d like to suggest something," Laura said. Her words piqued Lara’s interest, and she turned back to stare at Laura.

"I think we should work hand in hand against my mother," she stated.

Lara narrowed her eyes on her.

"Why? Why should I trust you? Why should I believe a word you say?" Lara quipped.

Laura took a deep breath.

"Because I believe that you are truly in love with my brother, and I want to help you fight against my mother."
