Accidentally Yours, Mr. Stranger-Chapter 34: Smokescreen
Chapter 34: Smokescreen
"Miss Lawrence, please wait," Officer Jenkins shouted as he ran after Sienna. He was utterly guilty. It was his fault that his subordinate had dared to pull such a stunt.
"Yes, Officer Jenkins?" Sienna folded her hands as she stood still, looking at him in hostility. All the respect she had for him vanished. All that remained was animosity and disgust.
"I’m sorry, Miss Lawrence. I should have..."
"Officer Jenkins, save your breath. I don’t want to listen to your apology. I don’t think I can handle it." Sienna didn’t allow him to speak. Although she didn’t trust him before, she at least had some hopes. Maybe, just maybe he’d help her find her family’s murderers.
But now, she had nothing. All her hopes died the moment she realized what had happened. The police weren’t helping her in any way. Instead, they were only adding more to her troubles.
"Miss Lawrence, I..." The policeman knew he had broken her trust completely even though he wasn’t the one at fault. She would never believe him henceforth.
"Miss Lawrence, let me." Kyrell took over when he noticed how tense the situation was. Sienna’s eyes were practically shooting fireballs at his friend while the man fidgeted uneasily in guilt.
Sienna stepped back, allowing Kyrell to take over. It didn’t matter to her what the police officer said. She wouldn’t ever trust him even if he was Kyrell’s friend.
’Investigate Andy Cahill. Find out if we know someone with the same surname.’ Sienna instructed Frank first before checking the news. All kinds of rumors were spreading about her, some even going as far as to labeling her a monster.
The news channels didn’t care about the evidence, nor did they try to verify the truth. They just pronounced her guilty of murdering her family. To hell with truth and humanity, profits were all they were interested in.
"Luther, what happened out there? How did this happen?" Kyrell questioned, glancing at Sienna who held a nonchalant expression. Although she seemed she wasn’t bothered by today’s incident, he knew otherwise. She was utterly vexed.
"Kyrell... I messed up this time," Luther said, feeling terrible for Sienna.
"What do you mean?"
Luther ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"I didn’t know Andy was targeting Miss Lawrence until the interrogation began. I thought it was a mere complaint we had received from Miss Lawrence’s grandaunt’s family."
"Is he new?" Kyrell asked, still unable to fathom what was happening. Everything was a mess.
"Yes. He was transferred to assist me in this case. He joined two days ago."
"Did you say he was transferred?" Sienna intervened suddenly and Kyrell and Luther both realized what she was trying to imply. At once, they both understood what was happening.
"I’ll investigate the matter, Miss Lawrence." Officer Jenkins vowed solemnly.
Sienna just smiled bitterly before shaking her head. She didn’t say anything and returned to her phone.
"Andy must have been instructed by someone to attack Miss Lawrence." Luther analyzed.
"It was a very poor attempt. Andy was bound to fail in it. Why would someone instruct him to do something so stupid?" Kyrell mused, still trying to wrap his head around the matter.
"What if that was the plan?" Sienna stated all of a sudden, disregarding the news she was reading.
"What do you mean, Miss Lawrence?" Kyrell quirked his brows questioningly, not understanding what she was getting at.
Sienna pushed her tongue against the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. She considered all possible reasons for someone to have used such a bleak method to harm her.
"It feels more like a smokescreen. To hide something big."
"Smokescreen? Why though?" Luther’s frown deepened in confusion. Nothing made sense to him.
But to Sienna, it all made sense. The puzzle was close to being solved. She just needed a piece to complete it. She was close to cracking the truth behind tonight’s attack.
But before she could grasp it, one of the constables rushed inside the police station and interrupted their conversation.
"Sir Jenkins, the reporters are going crazy outside. We are unable to contain them. What do we do?"
Luther smacked his forehead when he thought about the unruly reporters outside. He had been so focused on Andy and Sienna that he had forgotten them. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"I’ll handle them. Tell them to maintain law and order. Arrest anyone who dares to defy the rules," Officer Jenkins instructed the constable who returned to follow the orders.
"Luther, be careful. The reporters can be mean and unreasonable at times," Kyrell warned and Sienna realized only then that the police officer’s name was Luther.
But she didn’t give it much thought, returning to the puzzle she was close to solving.
"Miss Lawrence, I’ll check what’s happening outside. We might have to stay here until the reporters leave," Kyrell intimated to her of the situation and Sienna nodded, not bothering much about it. She was more interested in cracking the true plan.
Kyrell left Sienna inside and followed Luther outside the police station. His calm expression ruptured when he saw the number of reporters outside. There seemed to be more than fifty people, gathered outside just to gain some scoop.
’People are really sick,’ he thought, staying far away from them.
Meanwhile, Luther stepped forward to face the reporters who were pushing each other to get to the front. Darting a cold glance, he raised his hand and the crowd went silent immediately.
"I have a few words to say and I hope you record and telecast the same. We called Miss Lawrence here to ask her a few questions about the group of people who were following her today. She is not under arrest nor do we suspect her to have been involved in her family’s tragedy. I hope the reporters will maintain some work ethics and not twist the truth."
Luther’s voice was loud and clear and everyone heard him. The reporters glanced at each other, not knowing what to believe as the truth.
"But Miss Lawrence’s grandaunt and her family claimed that they have evidence of Miss Lawrence being involved in her family’s tragedy," one of the reporters shouted from behind, making it difficult for anyone to see who it was.
"Let them show me the evidence first. If Miss Lawrence is guilty, she cannot escape from the law. For now, she’s innocent and I hope you’ll not smear her name with baseless accusations.
With that, Luther turned around and entered the police station while the constables worked together to send the reporters off.
