Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 126: Three of Us
Ashton already climbed up onto the big bed. He moved cautiously, testing the waters to see if his parents would say anything about him claiming the best spot. For a few minutes, he sat there, observing his father and Delphinia come and go before throwing himself onto his back with a pleased sigh.
Ashton stared at the ceiling, his hands resting on his stomach as he let out another soft sigh. The bed felt huge and soft, almost like it was swallowing him up, but he didn’t mind. It was rare for him to feel this comfortable, especially since he didn’t usually want to sleep in his father’s room anymore.
Ashton shifted, resting his chin on his chest as he stared at the foot of the bed. Truthfully, he couldn’t remember the last time he had wanted this. Maybe back when it was just him and his dad, those nights when thunderstorms shook the house, and Evander would let him crawl into bed for comfort.
He couldn’t stop thinking about what his friends had said about having siblings.
Across the room, Delphinia sat at the vanity, fresh from the shower, gently running the brush through her hair. She glanced at Ashton occasionally, her lips curling into a soft smile every time her eyes landed on him. He looked so small against the large bed, his presence somehow making the room feel warmer and cozier.
Not long after, the sound of the bathroom door opening broke the quiet. Evander stepped out, his damp hair tousled from the towel he had used to dry it. He wore a plain white t-shirt and pajama bottoms, but his expression was far from relaxed. His brows were furrowed, his jaw tight, and his steps heavier than usual.
Delphinia noticed immediately and couldn’t help but chuckle softly. She knew exactly why he looked so grumpy.
Evander caught her amused expression and arched a brow. "What’s so funny?" he asked, his voice low to avoid waking Ashton if he was close to drifting off.
"Nothing," Delphinia replied, though her awkward chuckle betrayed her.
Evander walked over to her, shaking his head as if to say he didn’t believe her for a second. He picked up her brush from the vanity and motioned for her to sit still. Delphinia obeyed, folding her hands in her lap while he began brushing her hair.
His touch was firm but careful, the strokes of the brush soothing as they moved through her long strands. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping even lower as he whispered into her ear, "You enjoy torturing me, don’t you?"
Delphinia turned her head slightly, meeting his gaze in the mirror. "What was I supposed to do?" she whispered back, her tone light but defensive. "Pretend I didn’t hear the knock? Just leave Ashton standing out there?"
Evander chuckled, the sound low and rich as he continued brushing her hair. "Oh, so now you’re saying I’m the bad guy for wanting a quiet moment with my wife?" He arched a brow, his smirk evident in the mirror.
Delphinia tilted her head, her lips quirking into a playful grin. "No, I’m not."
Evander huffed, his lips twitching into a reluctant smirk. "Next time," he said, placing the brush back on the vanity, "I’ll make sure no one disturbs us."
He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head before straightening up and heading to the bed. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Delphinia watched him go, her heart warming at the sight of him ruffling Ashton’s hair before climbing in beside him. She stayed at the vanity for a moment longer, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of the table as she replayed Evander’s words in her mind.
After a moment, she got up, dimmed the room by turning off the light, then clicked on the bedside lamp before heading to bed. Delphinia slid under the covers, pulling the blanket up to her shoulders as she settled in on Ashton’s other side.
For a while, the room was quiet. Evander lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling, his thoughts a mystery. Ashton’s confidence wavered as he held onto his pajamas, his small hands clenching nervously. Delphinia could feel the weight of the silence pressing down on all of them, each wide awake for reasons they weren’t voicing.
Finally, Delphinia shifted, pulling the blanket higher and tucking it around all three of them. She reached out to pat Ashton gently, her touch light and comforting. "Let’s go to sleep," she said softly, her voice breaking the silence.
Ashton turned his head to look at her, his big eyes shimmering in the faint light. "Can I... Can I have a bedtime story?" he asked hesitantly.
Delphinia’s heart melted at the request. "Of course you can," she replied, her smile warm and reassuring.
She thought for a moment, then began to tell a story, her voice soft and steady as she wove a tale about a brave little fox who went on an adventure to find the perfect home. Her words painted vivid pictures of enchanted forests, sparkling rivers, and friendly animals who helped the fox along the way.
Ashton listened intently, his eyes wide with wonder as he imagined the world she was describing. A small smile tugged at his lips, and for a moment, the sadness that had been lingering around him seemed to fade.
Evander watched them silently, his gaze shifting between Delphinia and Ashton. There was something in his expression that Delphinia couldn’t quite place—something tender and thoughtful.
When Delphinia finished the story, she glanced down at Ashton to find him staring at her, his smile soft but thoughtful.
"Thank you," he said quietly, a shy smile crossing his face.
Delphinia brushed his hair back from his forehead and kissed him gently. "You’re welcome, sweetheart," she said.
Turning to his side, he pulled the blanket tight against his chest. As his eyes shut, his mind wandered, but one thought stayed with him, sharp and clear: It’s nice like this. I wish it could always be like this. Just the three of us.
