Chapter 161: Connection

The rhythmic clicking of camera shutters and the soft hum of conversation filled the photoshoot studio as Lydia continued her session. The energy in the room was electric, a blend of focused professionalism and creative passion. Delphinia watched for a moment, taking in the scene as makeup artists made quick touch-ups between shots, and stylists adjusted Lydia’s outfit with swift, practiced movements.

Cedric crouched beside Ashton, speaking in a low and reassuring tone. "Hey, little man, why don’t we go look around? It’s okay to explore a bit."

Ashton glanced at Delphinia, silently asking for approval. She gave him a small nod, her lips curving into an encouraging smile. "Go on, sweetheart. Have a little adventure."

Satisfied with her answer, Ashton turned back to Cedric, who grinned and ruffled his hair. "Alright, let’s go see what we can find."

Ashton trotted off ahead, his curiosity pulling him deeper into the set. Delphinia and Cedric remained where they were, watching the boy disappear into the flurry of activity.

"You know, it’s funny how small the world feels sometimes," Cedric remarked, shifting his attention to Delphinia. "I didn’t expect you to be close with Valerie. We all went to the same school—me, Evander, Lydia. Now here you are, married to Evander and standing in a place I never thought I’d see you."

Delphinia chuckled softly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Yeah, it does feel like everything somehow ties together. I never imagined myself in this kind of situation either."

Cedric smirked, tilting his head slightly. "You’re handling it well, though."

"Thanks," she said, offering a small but genuine smile. "It’s not always easy, but I just want what’s best for Ashton. And for Evander, too."

Cedric nodded, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Speaking of Ashton... I’m glad to see he’s finally opening up to Lydia. I know it must have been tough for him."

Delphinia exhaled softly, her gaze following Ashton from a distance. "Yeah. It wasn’t easy. He was so hesitant, so wary of her at first. But I can tell he’s trying, even if it’s just little steps." She turned to Cedric, her expression thoughtful. "And I’m glad Lydia is trying, too. I hope she keeps working at it."

Cedric studied her for a moment, his usual teasing demeanor softening. "You’re really good for him, you know. Ashton." He leaned against a nearby table, his arms crossed. "He trusts you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him attach to someone this fast."

Delphinia’s fingers toyed with the hem of her sweater, a mixture of warmth and humility spreading through her. "I just try to be there for him. I never wanted to replace anyone, least of all Lydia, but I want him to know he’s loved."

Cedric hummed in agreement. "That’s exactly what he needs. Not just someone who tells him what to do, but someone who actually listens."

She tilted her head slightly, regarding him curiously. "You care about him a lot, don’t you?"

"Of course," Cedric replied without hesitation. "I’ve known him since he was a baby. And I know Lydia’s mistakes hurt him more than he ever let on. It’s not easy for a kid to process all of that. That’s why... it’s good that you’re here."

Delphinia felt a subtle weight in his words, as though he wasn’t just acknowledging her presence in Ashton’s life but also accepting it. It was unexpected, yet strangely reassuring.

"Thank you," she said softly. "That means a lot."

Cedric gave a casual shrug, though there was something genuine in his expression. "You’re welcome."

A brief silence stretched between them, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was one of those rare pauses that allowed everything that had been said to settle.

Delphinia’s gaze shifted toward Cedric, then followed his line of sight. Lydia stood a few feet away, striking a playful pose, her arms outstretched as if she were about to take flight. A bright grin lit up her face, her golden hair catching the light just right.

Cedric watched her with an expression Delphinia couldn’t quite place—something soft, something distant. It wasn’t just amusement at Lydia’s antics. There was a glimmer of something deeper, something lingering just beneath the surface.

"You care about her a lot," Delphinia said, her voice light but knowing.

Cedric’s eyes flicked to her, and for a second, he hesitated. Then, he smiled, a small, fond curve of his lips. "How couldn’t I? Lydia is my dear friend."

The words were simple, and his tone was steady, but Delphinia caught it—that faint sadness woven into his smile, the way his eyes dimmed just slightly. It wasn’t just friendship. It was something more, something deep.

After a moment, Cedric broke the quiet with a small, almost mischievous grin. "You know, we should have lunch sometime. Just the two of us."

Delphinia blinked, surprised by the sudden suggestion. "Lunch?"

"Yeah," Cedric said with an easygoing chuckle. "I want to get to know you better. You’re kind of a mystery, you know."

She laughed lightly, shaking her head. "I don’t think I’m that much of a mystery."

"Oh, trust me, you are," he countered playfully. "So what do you say?"

Delphinia hesitated for only a second before nodding. "Alright. That sounds nice."

Cedric smiled, satisfied. "Good. I’ll hold you to that."

Ashton’s laughter echoed from across the room, drawing both of their gazes. The boy was happily exploring, his small hands gesturing excitedly as he pointed at different pieces of equipment.

For a brief moment, Delphinia allowed herself to simply watch, letting a quiet sense of peace settle over her. Delphinia smiled softly as she watched Ashton dart from one piece of equipment to another, his earlier tension all but gone. It was good to see him like this—curious, engaged.

When they first arrived, he had been stiff, hesitant, his small shoulders drawn tight with uncertainty.

Now, though, he was completely lost in his own little world, his excitement evident in every movement. His fingers traced the edges of a control panel, his bright eyes scanning the details as if trying to understand how everything worked.

Tomorrow was still uncertain. But for now, everything felt okay.
