Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 18: Reflections and Questions
The car’s engine noise faded as Evander stepped out of the car. The Walton Corporation’s towering glass building bounced the sunlight off its surface, making it sparkle on the pavement. Several employees, sharp in their suits and skirts, stopped for a moment to say hello.
"Good morning, Mr. Walton," a young woman called out with a polite smile.
"Morning," Evander replied, giving a slight nod. Walking confidently toward the entrance, his leather shoes tapping against the smooth marble floor.
As he pushed open the revolving doors, the lobby was as busy as ever—phones ringing, people talking, and the faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air. Evander greeted a few more employees with a brief but polite smile, but his mind was clearly elsewhere.
He glanced at his watch. A little past nine. "Late," he thought with a half-smile, a rare softness showing on his face. His thoughts wandered to why he was late—Delphinia.
Her flushed cheeks from the night before, the way she bit her lip nervously when she said something witty, and how she looked like she could break but still refused to back down. These images replayed in his mind, bringing an uncharacteristic smile to his face.
"Good morning, Mr. Walton!" a cheerful voice interrupted his thoughts as the elevator doors slid open.
Evander snapped back to the present and stepped inside, nodding briefly at the receptionist holding the elevator for him. He pressed the button for the top floor, shoving his hands into his pockets. As the elevator went up, the faint soft classical music played in the background, but Evander barely noticed. His thoughts once again wandered to his impulsive decision from last night.
Was it really impulsive, though? He wasn’t a man who acted without reason, but this time... this time felt different.
The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open. Evander walked out with confidence, and people couldn’t help but notice him. His employees gave him nods as he passed through the office.
"Good morning, sir," one murmured.
"Morning," Evander replied, not slowing down.
When Evander reached Hugo’s desk, Hugo stood up, holding a neat pile of folders.
"So," Hugo began, handing over a thick navy folder. "Here’s the finalized report on the Sutton project. You’re scheduled to review it this afternoon, but I thought you might want to take a look now. Also, the contract with Avery Industries is waiting for your signature. They’ve made some minor adjustments—section 14, I believe. It’s all highlighted for your convenience."
Evander took the folder without hesitation, flipping it open as he entered his large office. His steps slowed only briefly as he scanned the first few pages.
He sank into the chair and set the folder on the desk, skimming through the contents while Hugo standing close by, arms crossed and an observant expression on his face.
"Okay," Evander said finally, closing the folder and placing it neatly on the desk. "I’ll go over it in detail before the meeting. Anything else?"
Hugo hesitated for a moment, then smirked faintly. "You tell me."
Evander leaned back in his chair, raising an eyebrow. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
"Well..." Hugo started, crossing his arms tighter. "I didn’t even think you’d be here today."
Evander frowned slightly. "Why wouldn’t I be here?"
Hugo shrugged, but his face showed he was mildly surprised. "I mean... you did just get married last night. Isn’t a newlywed supposed to—oh, I don’t know—be on a honeymoon? Or at least, spend the morning with your wife?"
Evander blinked at him, taking a moment to process what he’d just heard. Then, he leaned forward, placed his elbows on the desk, and laced his fingers together. "What does my marriage have to do with work?"
Hugo sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "You can’t be serious. Evander, you married a woman you barely know. And now, less than twenty-four hours later, you’re acting like nothing’s changed."
Evander’s lips curled into a smile. "What’s your point, Hugo?"
"My point," Hugo said firmly, "is that I don’t get what you were thinking. This is a stranger we’re talking about. Have you thought about the consequences? Your parents are going to flip. Ashton—well, he’s going to have a field day with this."
Evander’s jaw tightened briefly at the mention of Ashton, though he didn’t let it show. "Hugo," he said evenly, "you’re overthinking it. I knew exactly what I was doing."
Hugo’s eyebrows shot up. "You knew? Evander, you literally dragged me into this without warning. If I’d had more time to process, I might’ve talked you out of it."
Evander leaned back in his chair, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Even if you tried, it wouldn’t have worked. When I make a decision, I stick to it."
"Clearly," Hugo muttered, though there was no malice in his tone.
For a moment, silence stretched between them. Hugo studied Evander carefully, noting the relaxed posture and subtle smile that seemed out of place on the usually stoic man.
"What?" Evander finally asked, raising an eyebrow.
Hugo shook his head. "I just... don’t get it. What got into you? Why her?"
Evander’s expression softened, though he didn’t answer immediately. He leaned back further in his chair, his gaze shifting to the large window behind Hugo. The city stretched out before him, but his thoughts were somewhere else entirely.
Why her?
It was a question he’d asked himself too, though he had a hard time putting the answer into words. Perhaps it was the way she’d stood her ground despite the absurdity of their situation. Or the vulnerability in her eyes that she tried so hard to mask.
Unconsciously, a small smile crept onto his lips.
Hugo noticed and groaned, throwing his hands up in mock frustration. "Oh no, you’re smiling. That’s never a good sign."
Evander chuckled, shaking his head. "Don’t worry, Hugo. I know exactly what I’ve gotten myself into."
Hugo sighed heavily, rubbing his temples. "I hope so. Because if this backfires, you’ll have more than just your parents to deal with."
Evander smirked, standing from his chair and clapping a hand on Hugo’s shoulder. "Relax. Everything will be fine."
Hugo muttered something under his breath, but before he could protest further, Evander had already picked up the folder and turned his attention back to work.
As Hugo left the office, Evander allowed himself one last thought of Delphinia. He didn’t fully understand the pull she had over him, but for the first time in years, he felt like he was doing something real.
And for now, that was enough.
