Chapter 182: A Grand Planning

The morning sun spilled golden light over the city as Delphinia maneuvered through the streets, her thoughts racing ahead to the task that now rested firmly on her shoulders. The weight of responsibility settled in, but with Evander’s approval from last night, she felt a little more at ease. It was reassuring to know that he trusted her to handle something as important as his birthday celebration.

Still, planning a grand party for a Walton was no small feat. Delphinia had sent a text to Elaine the moment Evander gave his consent, and within minutes, her mother-in-law responded with a message that made Delphinia smile: I knew I could rely on you.

That single sentence brought warmth to her heart, but also a heavy realization—she had no experience planning such an extravagant event. The closest she had come was arranging a small birthday gathering for Valerie, and even then, it had been a modest affair. This, however, would be on a completely different scale.

After dropping Ashton off at school, Delphinia took a deep breath and made her way to the Walton estate. She arrived at the grand residence, a place that still sometimes felt overwhelming despite how often she visited. The sheer elegance of the home, with its sprawling gardens and stately architecture, was enough to remind her that she had stepped into a world far different from the one she grew up in.

Elaine was already waiting for her in the sitting room, sipping a cup of tea as she glanced through what looked like a catalog of decorations. As Delphinia entered, Elaine’s eyes lit up, and she set the book down with a smile.

"Ah, Delphinia, you’re right on time," she said, gesturing for her to take a seat. "We have a lot to go over."

Delphinia nodded, smoothing her hands over her lap as she sat down. "Yes, I figured we should get started right away."

Elaine wasted no time diving into details, flipping through pages filled with pictures of elegant floral arrangements, luxurious table settings, and opulent chandeliers. "Now, first things first—we need a theme. Something grand, of course. A Walton’s birthday party isn’t just an event, it’s an experience. What do you think about a black-and-gold theme? Classic, sophisticated."

Delphinia blinked, feeling a little overwhelmed already. "That... sounds nice," she said hesitantly.

Elaine nodded approvingly and continued, "Then we need to think about the venue. Of course, it will be at the Royal’s Grand Ballroom—nothing less will do. I’ll reach out to the event coordinator there and ensure everything is in place."

Delphinia let out a small breath of relief. At least that part was taken care of.

Elaine flipped another page. "And then the flowers. We need the best. Peonies, hydrangeas, orchids—something elegant, nothing too ordinary. I’ll have my florist send samples so we can choose. And the menu..." She trailed off, tapping her manicured nails against the glossy pages. "We need a tasting session. The best caterers. Evander likes a balance of refined yet hearty dishes. And then the guest list—we’ll have to be very careful about who we invite. Only the most distinguished people, of course."

Delphinia tried to keep up, nodding at appropriate moments, but truthfully, her head was spinning. She hadn’t even considered all these tiny details. The scale of this party was immense.

Elaine must have noticed her silence because she finally looked up and smiled knowingly. "You look overwhelmed."

Delphinia chuckled nervously. "A little. I just... I’ve never planned anything this big before. I might need some time to take everything in."

Elaine reached across the table and patted her hand. "That’s completely fine, dear. We’ll take it one step at a time. You’re not alone in this—I’ll help you through it."

That reassurance eased some of Delphinia’s nerves. "Thank you, Elaine. I appreciate it."

The conversation drifted naturally after that, touching on everything and nothing all at once. Laughter filled the air, light and easy, and for the first time in a while, Delphinia felt a little lighter, like she wasn’t carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.

Before she knew it, the soft chime of the clock on the wall signaled noon. Delphinia blinked in surprise, glancing at the window where the sunlight had shifted, casting a golden glow over the room.

Elaine scretch before also glancing at the clock. "Let’s take a break and have lunch. We can discuss more details afterward."

They moved to the dining area, where a beautiful spread was already arranged. As they ate, Elaine shifted the conversation. "By the way, I wanted to ask about Lydia and Ashton. We didn’t get a chance to talk about it yesterday."

Delphinia swallowed her bite of food a little slower than necessary, her fork pausing in the air. Lydia. So much for light conversation.

Indeed, up until now, they had been talking about easy, small things—the garden, the weather, the neighbor’s ridiculous cat. But Lydia? That was an entirely different weight altogether.

Delphinia placed her fork down gently, already anticipating where this conversation was headed. "Lydia came to pick up Ashton. He was surprised but ok to see her."

Elaine sighed, shaking her head slightly. "I was worried about that. Lydia has always been unpredictable. I just don’t want Ashton to get hurt if she suddenly decides to disappear again."

Delphinia understood the concern all too well. She, too, had been skeptical about Lydia’s sudden reappearance. "I’ll be keeping an eye on things," she assured Elaine. "Ashton’s well-being is my top priority."

Elaine studied her for a long moment before giving a nod of approval. "I trust you, Delphinia. You’ve always been good for Ashton."

Delphinia felt warmth spread in her chest at the words. Coming from Elaine, it meant a lot.

The conversation drifted between casual topics and more details about the party. But as they spoke, Delphinia couldn’t shake the feeling that, despite Elaine’s polite demeanor, there was an undeniable hint of dislike toward Lydia lingering beneath her words.

And she wasn’t sure it was ever going to go away.
