Chapter 226: Morning Teases

Evander groaned as he stirred awake, his head pounding like a relentless drum. He cracked one eye open, immediately regretting it as the morning light stabbed through the curtains and directly into his skull. A deep sigh left his lips as he turned onto his side, burying his face into the pillow. He hadn’t drunk this much in a long time. In fact, he couldn’t even remember the last time he’d let himself get this drunk. He blamed his friends.

With another groan, he pushed himself up on one elbow and blinked blearily at his surroundings. His vision was still a little fuzzy, and his throat felt like sandpaper. But the first thing he noticed was the empty space beside him. Delphinia wasn’t in bed.

His heart gave a little jump, an reaction he hadn’t quite gotten used to yet. He ran a hand through his already messy hair and dragged himself out of bed, his bare feet hitting the cool floor. He stumbled slightly but steadied himself against the edge of the bed.

Where was she?

Just as he turned towards the door, it swung open, revealing Delphinia standing there with a tray in her hands. The scent of something warm and soupy filled the air, and for the first time that morning, Evander didn’t feel like death.

"You’re awake," Delphinia observed, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I was just about to wake you."

Evander ran a hand down his face. "Didn’t think I’d ever wake up again," he muttered, his voice still raspy from sleep. "How bad was I last night?"

Delphinia walked over and placed the tray on the bedside table before sitting beside him. "Let’s just say you weren’t exactly graceful," she teased, handing him the bowl. "Drink this. You need it."

He took the bowl from her hands, eyeing the contents. "You made this?"

She nodded. "Of course. A drunk husband is a useless husband. I need you back in working condition."

Evander smirked, taking a careful sip. It was warm and soothing, easing the tightness in his stomach. "You’re the best wife," he mumbled between sips.

She raised an eyebrow. "I better be. I’m the only wife you have."

Evander chuckled, though it ended in a slight wince. His head still throbbed, but at least his stomach wasn’t protesting anymore. He glanced at Delphinia, who was watching him with amused eyes.

"You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?" he accused playfully.

"A little." She grinned. "It’s not every day I get to see Evander Walton this weak and helpless."

Evander rolled his eyes but smirked. "At least I didn’t do anything stupid while drunk. Unlike someone I know." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Delphinia crossed her arms, her lips twitching. "Oh? And who might that be?"

He gave her a pointed look. "You. At least I didn’t go and do something crazy like, say, getting married to a stranger after one night."

Delphinia gasped dramatically. "Are you saying marrying you was stupid?"

Evander held up his hands in surrender. "I take it back. I lose."

She laughed, shaking her head as she reached for his now-empty bowl and placed it back on the tray. He watched her, his gaze softening. There was something about seeing her like this—so natural, so effortlessly caring—that made his heart feel oddly warm, even in his miserable hungover state.

Evander sighed, rubbing his temple as if trying to massage away the remnants of his hangover. "And for the record, I don’t like getting drunk either," he admitted, his voice still slightly hoarse. "Last night was an exception."

Delphinia arched a brow, amusement dancing in her eyes. "Oh? And what made last night so special?"

Evander glanced at her, then shrugged, a lazy smirk tugging at his lips. "Celebration. Good company. And maybe... I just felt like it."

She chuckled, shaking her head as she settled beside him on the bed. "Well, once in a while is okay," she said, nudging his knee with hers. "Though I hope you know I had to call Cedric to help me drag you to the bedroom."

Evander groaned, covering his face with his hands. "Great. So Cedric had the pleasure of seeing me at my worst?"

"Oh, absolutely. He was very entertained."

Delphinia stood up, but before she could take the tray away, she paused. "Oh, right. I meant to tell you—I’m meeting Cedric tomorrow."

Evander frowned. "What for?"

Delphinia shrugged. "Just a regular lunch."

His frown deepened. "Weird."

She rolled her eyes. "Why? Do you think it’s a bad idea?"

He hesitated for a second before shaking his head. "No... just weird."

Delphinia reached out and patted his cheek teasingly. "It’s fine, Evander. It’s just lunch."

Delphinia kept her expression light, but as she pulled her hand back, her thoughts swirled.

It would be a lie to say she didn’t think it was weird too. Because, honestly? It was.

Cedric inviting her to lunch—just the two of them—was unexpected. She barely knew him outside of being Evander’s close friend, and their interactions had always been polite but brief. If anything, it had always felt like Cedric was watching her from a distance, quietly assessing. And now, suddenly, he wanted to have lunch?

Yeah, definitely weird.

But instead of overthinking it, she chose to look at it in a positive way. Maybe Cedric just wanted to get to know her better. She was Evander’s wife, after all, and it wasn’t unusual for close friends to be curious about the person their best friend had chosen to spend his life with.

Or—she glanced at Evander, noting the slight crease between his brows—maybe Cedric’s reason went beyond simple curiosity.

Judging by how much Cedric cared for Ashton, it wouldn’t be surprising if he just wanted to make sure that Ashton was in the right hands. That would make sense, wouldn’t it? A protective uncle figure wanting to know the woman who was now a permanent presence in the child’s life?

Yeah. That could be the case.

He grabbed her wrist before she could pull away and gave her a serious look. "Just punch him if he says or does anything weird."

She raised an eyebrow. "Punch him?"

Evander nodded solemnly. "Or no, don’t hurt your pretty hand. Just throw things at him."

Delphinia laughed, shaking her head. "He’s your friend."

"I’m serious." His voice was firm, but there was amusement in his eyes. "Call me if anything feels off."

Delphinia just nodded, her expression lighthearted. In her mind, there was nothing to worry about. It was just Cedric.

What could possibly go wrong?
