Chapter 234: The Right Thing to Do

Delphinia stood in the middle of her father’s study, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. The air was thick with tension, the scent of aged wood and expensive cologne doing nothing to mask the suffocating weight of betrayal she felt. Robert Harrington, seated behind his grand mahogany desk, stared at her in stunned silence.

"You lied to me," Delphinia’s voice was sharp, cutting through the heavy silence like a blade. "All these years, you let me believe that my mother’s death was my fault. But it wasn’t, was it?" Her lips curled in disdain. "It was because of your infidelity."

Robert blinked, a slight frown knitting his brow as he sat back in his chair. His eyes were wide, as if Delphinia had just spoken a language he didn’t understand, but she could see the tension in his jaw, the way his fingers tightened around the armrests of his chair. It was the first time in years that she had seen him visibly rattled, but his response was slow, almost deliberate.

"What... what are you talking about?" he asked, his voice soft, though there was a slight edge to it, like he was trying to maintain control over the situation.

Delphinia couldn’t help herself. A bitter, hollow laugh escaped her lips as she took a step closer, her eyes never leaving his face. The audacity. The sheer nerve. He could still sit there and act innocent, as if he didn’t know exactly what she was talking about. She could feel the familiar knot of anger tightening in her chest.

"Are you seriously asking me that?" she said, her tone laced with disbelief. She shook her head, not able to stop the laugh that followed, though it was sharp and cruel. "It’s almost laughable, Father. You really still think you can play the innocent father, don’t you? After all these years?"

Robert’s expression darkened, and his brows furrowed as he pushed back his chair, rising to his full height. "You don’t understand, Delphinia—"

"Oh, I understand perfectly," she cut him off. "You cheated on my mother with that woman, and when she found out, it broke her. Her health, which was already fragile, couldn’t handle the betrayal. And then she was pregnant with me—"

Her voice wavered, but she quickly composed herself. "And instead of carrying the guilt like a decent man, you put it all on me. A child. You let me believe that I killed her. How could you?"

Robert’s jaw tightened, his hands balling into fists on the desk. "I never wanted that to happened, Delphinia. I just—"

"That’s exactly what you did!" she shouted, her voice rising. "You let me live my entire life thinking I was the reason she died while you played house with that snake!"

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway, and then the door burst open. Helena stood in the doorway, draped in a silk robe, her long, immaculately styled hair cascading over her shoulders. Her sharp, fox-like eyes flicked between Robert and Delphinia before settling on the latter with a smirk.

"What’s all the shouting about?" Helena purred, her voice laced with feigned concern. "Oh, Delphinia, dear, what a surprise to see you here."

Delphinia turned slowly, her eyes like ice. "Don’t ’dear’ me, Helena. You’re just as guilty as he is. You knew he was married. You knew my mother was sick, and you still played the other woman." She took a slow step forward. "How does it feel, knowing you contributed to another woman’s death?" 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Helena’s smirk faltered for a second before she regained her composure. "You don’t know what you’re talking about. Your father and I—"

"Are a disgrace," Delphinia snapped. "And you," she turned back to Robert, "still have a chance to make things right. Divorce her. Chase her out of this house. It’s the least you can do after what you’ve done."

Robert’s expression hardened. "That’s enough, Delphinia. This is my house, and Helena is my wife. I won’t hear another word against her."

Delphinia let out a bitter laugh. "Of course. Of course, you’d choose her over the truth. Over your own daughter. What was I expecting? A conscience?"

"You’re being unreasonable," Robert said. "This is my life, my marriage. It’s not your place to dictate what I do."

"Not my place?" Delphinia scoffed, shaking her head. "You made it my place the moment you used me as your scapegoat."

Helena sighed dramatically. "Really, Delphinia, you should learn to let go of the past. Your mother is gone, and no amount of blame will change that."

Delphinia’s eyes blazed as she took a step closer. "Let go? The way you let go of your morals? The way you let go of any sense of decency when you crawled into my father’s bed?"

Helena gasped, her face twisting with rage, but Delphinia ignored her. She turned back to Robert, her voice now eerily calm. "You disgust me. Both of you. You may have rewritten history for yourself, but I know the truth now. And so will everyone else."

With that, she spun on her heel and strode out of the room, ignoring the calls behind her. She stormed down the grand hallway, her heart pounding, her breath shaky but determined. She had come here seeking justice, seeking remorse, but she had found none.

As she stepped out of the mansion’s iron gates, she stopped abruptly.

Evander stood there, leaning against his car, his arms crossed over his chest. His gaze met hers instantly, dark eyes filled with understanding, with something deeper. Concern. Affection.

Delphinia felt her entire body relax, the storm inside her settling for just a moment.

She took a shaky breath and then walked toward him. As soon as she reached him, he pulled her into his embrace, his arms wrapping securely around her. Delphinia buried her face against his chest, inhaling his familiar scent, feeling the warmth of his presence. For the first time since stepping into that house, she felt safe.

Evander held her tightly, whispering against her hair, "I’ve got you."

And for now, that was enough.
