Chapter 50: Not What It Looks Like

Delphinia’s heart raced as she bit her lip, pacing on the driveway. "Where the hell are the guards?" she muttered under her breath, glancing toward the empty security post. Of course, they might already be down.

"Great, just great," she thought, mentally kicking herself for her luck. Turning her eyes back to the scene unfolding, she spotted Ashton being led toward a sleek black car by a man she didn’t recognize.

Panic clawed at her. She needed to call 911. Her fingers twitched, itching to grab her phone, but her stomach dropped when her pocket was empty—it was still in her room! She had to go back, but hold on...

What if the police didn’t arrive in time? Was it better to try saving Ashton herself? The thought of confronting the man alone made her legs tremble, but Delphinia forced herself to focus.

She quickly ran through her options, none of them great. Screaming for the maids was an idea—but then again, it could give the kidnapper a chance to escape.. Dashing inside to rally help seemed logical, but what if the car drove off before she returned? No, she couldn’t risk it.

Ugh, no matter what she chose, everything felt like a bad idea—what was she even supposed to do?

Eyes darting around for anything she could use, Delphinia spotted a shovel leaning against the side of the garden shed. Perfect. If she could ambush the kidnapper, she might stand a chance. Grabbing the shovel, she tightened her grip on the handle, the wooden surface rough against her palms.

"Okay, Delphinia. You’ve got this," she whispered to herself.

She crouched low, moving quietly across the driveway, her breaths shallow and quick. Her heart nearly stopped when she saw Ashton climb into the car willingly. "What the hell?" she whispered. Candy or some other bribe must have lured him. She had to act fast.

The man was still standing with his back turned, leaning slightly to look into the car. A perfect opening. Delphinia raised the shovel high, aiming for his head. "Just one swing. Make it count," she thought, trying to calm her nerves.

But as she started to bring it down, the man crouched to check something in the car, and she missed her moment.

The sudden movement made her gasp audibly, and the man spun around at the noise. Delphinia froze, the shovel still raised like a weapon.

"What the—" the man started, eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

"Let the child go!" Delphinia shouted, standing her ground and staring him down.

The man blinked, tilting his head as though trying to process her words. "What?" he asked, sounding confused.

"I said, let the child go, or I’ll smash your head open like a watermelon!" Delphinia snapped, waving the shovel for effect.

Delphinia’s heart hammered in her chest as she watched the man’s hand hover near his waist. Shit, he’s going for a gun, she thought, panic rising. But to her surprise, he didn’t pull anything out. Her breath caught in relief, though it was short-lived.

He held his hands up a little, a clear "let’s not do anything crazy" move. "Wait, hold on. I think there’s been a misunderstanding—"

"Don’t you dare try to fool me!" Delphinia interrupted, inching closer while keeping the shovel pointed at him. "I’ve already called the police, and they’ll be here any second."

The lie sounded convincing to her, but the man only raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching as if suppressing a laugh.

Now that she got a better look, the kidnapper was young—and, annoyingly, pretty handsome. Too bad he chose crime as his career. Life could do that to people, though, twist the good ones into something darker.

I shouldn’t be thinking about that right now.

Delphinia quickly turned her attention to the car. "Ashton! Come out, honey!" she shouted, hoping he’d rush to her aid.

For a moment, there was no movement. She looked back at the kidnapper, who was still standing there, an amused smirk playing on his lips. Her heart raced. Where is he?

No surprise Ashton didn’t budge. Poor little guy, she thought. He was probably frozen stiff with fear or just too confused to know what to do.

She whipped around to see the kidnapper smirking even more now. This plan was never going to go smoothly.

Before anyone could say another word, the sound of an engine roared from behind. A black car rolled up next to them, the tires scraping the ground. Relief washed over her when she spotted Evander getting out of the car, still looking flawless in his sharp suit.

"Evander!" she called out, lowering the shovel slightly as she rushed to his side. She grabbed his arm, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush. "This man—he’s trying to kidnap Ashton! He was putting him in the car!"

Evander’s expression didn’t shift to panic as she expected. Instead, his brows knitted in confusion as he looked toward the supposed kidnapper, who was now leaning casually against the car, arms crossed.

"Kidnap?" Evander echoed, raising a brow, sounding more amused than alarmed.

"Yes!" Delphinia insisted, tugging on his sleeve. "I caught him red-handed!"

Before Evander could respond, Ashton climbed out of the car, clutching a bag of what looked like toys and snacks. "Daddy, look! Uncle Julian brought me all these!" Ashton exclaimed excitedly, holding up the bag like a trophy. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Delphinia froze. "Uncle... Julian?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

The so-called kidnapper pushed off the car with a chuckle, brushing his hands on his pants as he approached them. "Hello to you too," he said, flashing her a grin that was infuriatingly charming.

Evander sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Delphinia, meet my brother. Julian. Julian, this is my wife, Delphinia."

Her jaw dropped. The shovel slipped from her grasp, clattering noisily onto the ground. She clapped a hand over her mouth, her face flushing with a mix of embarrassment and horror.

Oh no, did she really just come that close to bashing her brother-in-law?
