Addiction to Temptation: His Mischievous Sweetheart Captivates Him-Chapter 264: Have a Little Girl Just Like You
The New Year was celebrated at the Vaughn Family’s place.
Several days before the New Year, Natalie Vaughn was called back home. She would be going to Kensingport to study in spring, so it was only natural that Mom and Dad didn’t want her to leave home early. Zane Thorne found out while he was still at the company, and afterward, he went straight to the Vaughn Family’s place after work.
Jokingly, wherever his wife was, that’s where he’d be too.
Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn couldn’t help but laugh at Zane Thorne’s clingy demeanor. Initially, when they were trying to arrange a meeting for the two, Natalie was quite unwilling. But now? Didn’t she just run to the door, forgetting to put on her shoes, as soon as she heard the car?
Zane Thorne was wrapped up in Natalie’s embrace, and when he saw she was only wearing a pair of socks, he frowned, wrapped an arm around her waist, and lifted her up.
"Where are your shoes?"
Natalie stuck out her tongue.
"I forgot."
Zane had no choice but to remove his shoes and carry Natalie to the couch barefoot. Behind him, Mr. Dawson brought a pair of men’s slippers over.
"Zane, Nina can be quite forgetful. Thank you for taking care of her."
Mr. Vaughn was very pleased with Zane Thorne’s actions earlier. His Nina should be pampered and protected.
"Dad, it’s what I ought to do."
As usual, the conversation transitioned from casual family talk to business. Natalie found it dull and ended up discussing some jewelry from an auction with Tanya Donovan who was beside her.
As they chatted, Natalie noticed Tanya’s rosy complexion and slightly rounder face, and suddenly asked.
"Sister-in-law, have you gained a bit of weight?"
Tanya first touched her own face, then her waist.
"It seems like it. Since I returned, your brother has been feeding me all sorts of things, and Mom has been making me soups."
Eating like that would indeed lead to weight gain, but Natalie felt that her sister-in-law’s brows and eyes had a different kind of tenderness that wasn’t there before. It struck her as odd.
It wasn’t until dinner that Natalie realized what was strange. This new tenderness was due to her being pregnant, a gentle glow brought by motherhood.
While Tanya was experiencing morning sickness, the entire family, except Zane Thorne, was in a bit of a frenzy, and James Vaughn didn’t dare lay a hand on Tanya.
"What are you standing around for? Go to the hospital for a check-up."
They couldn’t continue eating now. James would be turning thirty-five next year; not young anymore. The Vaughn Family had been longing for grandchildren for too long, and Tanya’s symptoms seemed too much like pregnancy.
Although James was a little jittery, he still had some rationality left. He planned to take Tanya to the hospital once she felt a bit better. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn couldn’t sit still at home and went with them, leaving Natalie and Zane Thorne alone at the house.
"Do you think I’m going to be an aunt?"
Zane looked down at Natalie’s reaction, wrapped an arm around her waist, and unconsciously rubbed it a few times.
"Do you like kids?"
Natalie blinked. She liked her sister-in-law’s sweet, soft looks a lot, and she thought the child born from her brother would surely be adorable.
"Little munchkins are probably very endearing."
Thinking of that, Natalie chuckled, leaning against Zane’s chest.
"My brother’s not exactly young anymore. Even though he doesn’t say it, he’s probably been hoping for this child for a long time. Now, it’s finally come true."
Seeing Natalie’s tenderness as she talked about children, Zane felt a stir in his heart.
"I’m not exactly young either."
Natalie: ...
"I’m only twenty-four."
Zane smiled, reached up, and pinched Natalie’s nose.
"Mm, you’re still a little girl yourself, how can I let you have another little girl."
Natalie wrinkled her nose and slapped his hand away.
"How do you know I’d have a little girl?"
"Intuition."
"I don’t believe you. Are you favoring girls over boys?"
"I’m not."
"You must be. Your first thought was about having a little girl."
Zane couldn’t argue, so he just smiled helplessly.
"Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little girl as pretty as you?"
"And wouldn’t it be nice to have a boy as handsome as you?"
"It would."
Natalie: ??????? Why didn’t he respond as expected?
This topic was still too distant for them right now, so they tacitly agreed not to discuss it further.
Two hours later, James and the others returned; Tanya was indeed pregnant. Watching the happy faces of the whole family, Natalie couldn’t help but nudge James with her elbow and mouthed to him.
"Impressive."
Her sister-in-law had only been back for a little over a month.
James first looked at Natalie, then glanced meaningfully at Zane and replied softly.
"Get ready to buy a present for my child."
Natalie: ... As if she would skimp on gifts for her own niece or nephew?
....
This was Zane Thorne’s first time staying overnight at the Vaughn Family’s home. Natalie’s room was quite different from what was in Rivermark Apartments, moving away from the white and gray main colors to pink elements everywhere.
It was girlish, and Natalie felt a bit embarrassed.
"My mom still treats me like a kid."
Natalie wasn’t particularly fond of pink, but she didn’t dislike it either. So she let Mrs. Vaughn indulge in creating a princess room for her.
Zane felt a bit out of place entering the room, but he was unaware of it and examined it closely. Mrs. Vaughn had decorated it well, with Natalie’s photos everywhere, from childhood to the present, capturing every stage of her life.
Unlike the secret snapshots Quentin Donovan had saved from James Vaughn’s perspective, these photos were all from Mrs. Vaughn’s view of Natalie, making her appear even more cheerful and adorable. Zane picked up a childhood photo of Natalie and spoke out.
"Sweetie."
"Mm?"
"I think we should have a little girl who looks like you."
Natalie: ...
It was still early. Zane hadn’t brought any work home, so after freshening up, Natalie began to share stories behind each photo.
"This one is from kindergarten when a little boy thought I was so cute that he kissed me. I slapped him afterward."
"This is from pre-school. I didn’t like practicing writing, so I tore up my notebook. But the teacher thought I was too cute and never frowned at me. Thinking back, it might have been because of Dad. I really overdid it back then."
"When I first started elementary school, I still didn’t like studying, but because I was smart, I always came first in exams. The class even had an award ceremony. Just look at how smug I look in the photo."
"Middle school was annoying. Many boys started pulling pranks, trying to impress me in the most troublesome ways. I just beat them up, and it was my brother who went to school. This photo was taken when we got home."
"High school... This photo is misleading. Only my mom thinks I’m a good girl. In reality, I was quite naughty, skipping classes and fighting, almost like a school bully."
As Natalie was reminiscing, Zane pointed to a photo suddenly.
"What happened here?"
Back then, Natalie was sitting in a wheelchair.
"Oh, that was when I accidentally rode my bike into a ditch."
Zane rested his chin on her shoulder, chuckling softly.
"How did you manage to fall while riding a bike?"
Natalie frowned slightly.
"I was distracted by something, watching a couple on the street. Or maybe they weren’t a couple, but an older man and a young lady."
While speaking, Natalie’s brows furrowed tightly.
"I feel like I’ve seen that young lady somewhere before."
