Chapter 16: Bolshevia Mines

"Just as a... heads up, at least for the beauty who kept me company~! I'll be in town for four days, so if you find everything you need and require some transportation back to the city..."

The somewhat overweight yet homely and tanned futanari grinned at Ulya before giving Izzy and I a more neutral glance, her clear favoritism towards the fine piece of ass that she'd been fucking for the last day and a half not really bothering any of us even if Ulya blushed at the compliment.

"Just meet me back here, yeah? Otherwise... thank you very much, beautiful~! These last days were brighter because of you~! Good luck, and stay safe!"

Blowing Ulya a kiss and winking at her, the merchant cracked her reins and set off towards a different part of town, leaving us in front of another thing that I was somewhat expecting thanks to the games and books I had read in my prior life.

A sprawling mega complex of tunnel entrances carved into the side of a gigantic mountain that seemed unrealistically tall, its peak shrouded by the clouds alongside another half of it that we weren't able to see; then there was the fact that it clearly went deeper into the earth as well - obviously - thanks to the vast 'roots' of uniquely colored stone that comprised the mountain.

Dozens, maybe even a hundred or so entrances were carved into the side of the green mountain, each entrance surrounded by small 'towns' of tents and carriages that were all grouped together based on clear allegiances, and even though we were at the base of the mountain ourselves some of the other entrances looked like ant colonies gathered around their nest.

This was a fantasy dungeon if I had ever seen one, and it was here that we were apparently going to make a whole lot of money... for our Ranks, anyways, and especially mine; during the time 'escorting' the merchant over to Bolshevia Mines I had been brought up to speed on some more commonly known things, like currency and an adventurers 'hourly rate'.

Obviously we weren't paid a salary, but there was a rate that each Rank had that was the average, and you wanted to stay near it as best as you could; for an E Ranker, I was making barely enough to cover a room at a shitty Inn, two meals a day and maybe enough to make sure one of those meals was properly cooked.

E Ranker's weren't meant to be surviving on this 'hourly rate', and as such most people fought hard to claw their way out of it; earning only a single Silver for ten hours of labor a day was pathetic, and since run down Inn's charged five Coppers for a night and then two Coppers for a meal you were barely able to live.

Izzy and Ulya on the other hand were suppose to make a little over ten Silvers for ten hours, alongside the additional profit brought in from any monster parts or materials that they sold on top of the quest rewards; that got them about three days at a good Inn with two good meals each day, and when you moved up to B Rank...

The rate jumped to nearly ten Silvers - which was also a single Gold - for just an hour, and then A Rankers... that brought a little bit of bile to the back of my throat as Izzy told me they usually made ten Gold per hour, and the adventurers at the top of A Rank could clear hundreds of Gold an hour depending on what they were doing.

Obviously the reward meant there was one hell of a risk, but still... to say I wasn't disgusted by what I heard would be an understatement, especially since it seemed that Izzy and Ulya weren't even really meeting their rate if they needed to continue to rely on Ulya getting fucked for a carriage ride...

Still, I didn't know their financial situation at all, but I did know mine; I was broke again, and anything was better than nothing, so I was keen to enter this 'dungeon' and earn myself some coin to spend on some better things, and thankfully my enthusiasm was shared and appreciated.

Not even just by Izzy and Ulya; when we walked past a few of the other adventuring parties near our entrance many looked over at us and waved, grinning and sharing some information freely, something that puzzled me a little before Izzy said "There's no need to fight one another over everything inside of the Bolshevia Mines. This mountain - these mines - are absurdly gigantic. No single coalition of parties could claim these resources as their own and be able to extract them all."

That cleared up a little, and perhaps that was why everyone seemed so happy and warm outside of the two story tall hole in the mountain that was illuminated by torchlight, acting like the roars and sounds of pickaxes hitting stone simply weren't there; money could make you forget everything, after all, and the people gathered in groups were all sitting on crates of ore, stone, bones and more.

All of that was money, and they clearly were getting a good haul even if they were a little bruised and battered; some were nursing terrible wounds and yet the greed within them numbed the pain, and that right there was something I could appreciate, something I could value.

Looking back up at the staggeringly tall mountain that seemed to pierce the heavens, I swore to myself that I would make some good money here, that I would repay my debt to these two wonderful futanari and get my journey started properly inside of this green paradise of rock and metal.

Whether or not I could make that a reality was a whole different story, but for right now I listened to Izzy as she went over everything again and steeled myself to do everything that was needed of me, the weight of the mace she had given me resting against my thigh while the various rucksacks we had rested on my back, waiting to be filled with resources.
