Affinity: Chaos-Chapter 1762: Dragon Mountain II
The group from the Vaergahl Family stayed in the caves created there. From what Grey heard from the youths from the Vaergahl Family, they would usually come here once every few decades to have an exchange with the Dragons. These exchanges generally revolved around sparring sessions. The humans from the Vaergahl Family will not only spar with the Dragons, but also a few subsidiary families under the Dragons since Dragons were too few.
Having nothing to do, Grey looked forward to what would happen the next day.
The next day soon arrived, and Grey followed the group from the Vaergahl Family to gather at the foot of the mountain, waiting for the old man.

A few minutes after they’d all gathered, the old man led them toward the direction of one of the smaller mountains. According to him, the sparring session would take place there.
It took the group sometime before they arrived at the mountaintop where the sparring session would take place. At the time Grey and the others from the Vaergahl Family arrived, they noticed that there were already three groups present. Each of these groups was Magical Beasts; one group belonged to the Dragon Clan, while the other two were Snakes and Lizards, respectively. Lizards and Snakes could be said to be from the lineage of Dragons, and they all regarded Dragons as royals in the Magical Beast world. The strength and wondrous abilities of Dragons made it even easier for them to maintain this position.
The old man hurriedly showed his respect to Sir Astarot who was present there. He also greeted the duo leading the Snakes and Lizards respectively. None of them spoke any nonsense as the sparring session started almost immediately.
The battle was quite brutal. Compared to humans, Magical Beasts rely mostly on their superior physique to fight against each other. Although they all have elemental abilities, it was not their primary means of attack. When the battle started, Grey noticed that the average member of the Vaergahl Family had a physique far better than that of a normal Elementalist. Their physique isn’t as great as Grey’s, but it was massively better than that of other Elementalists.
Watching these people spar, Grey only saw it as a means of entertainment. He almost couldn’t count how many times he had come to competitions like these. While watching to see how each individual would perform, Grey was taken away by the strength of the Dragons that participated in this sparring session. Dragons had fewer numbers, but they also had the highest winning rate of any of the groups. The Dragons won their first five matches, losing only one in ten. The other three groups each had a win rate of about fifty percent or so, with those from the Vaergahl Family having around a sixty percent win rate.
There were a few battles that Grey found interesting. Watching others fight is always more fun than engaging in it. This was the only thought in Grey’s mind all through the time he was watching the group engage in the competition.
The day went by in a flash.
Grey watched one fight after another, having a lot of emotions from each battle. There were even times he was greatly surprised after seeing a candidate he didn’t expect to put up much of a fight actually go on to do very well. The scene amazed him.
’I think I’ll watch more battles.’

He didn’t think that he’d enjoy watching others fight this much. But thinking deeply about it, he realized that he wouldn’t be able to have the luxury of seeing a fight of this level too often. One of the reasons he enjoyed these battles is purely due to the fact that the majority of the fight was close combat. Most of the fights Grey has been involved in and watched, generally revolve around the use of elements.
After the competition, Grey was led by the old man to meet with Sir Astarot and a few other Dragons. He learned during this trip that Lucas’ intention of wanting to come here is to ask for the stance of the Dragons and see if he could get them to fight alongside humans against the Gnomes.
The old man from the Vaergahl Family had the same thought in mind, but he wasn’t confident that he’d be able to convince the Dragons alone, and just when he was still contemplating the matter, Lucas reached out to him and told him of his plan to seek the Dragons out.
He agreed the second he heard of it, taking Lucas by surprise. Now that Lucas isn’t here with him, he has no other choice but to take Grey with him to the meeting. For now, they weren’t doing any deep conversations, the Dragons were mainly focusing on the abilities of the Gnomes. This isn’t the first time the Dragons had heard about Gnomes; after all, it wasn’t the first time the Gnomes were invading, but during the last war, the already small number of Dragons once again saw a drastic reduction.
Dragons were rare Magical Beasts that were seen as valuable partners for most top experts. During the last war, a lot of Dragons died while accompanying their companions. So although the Dragons weren’t a faction that planned to fight against the Gnomes, a lot of them still ended up dying under the hands of Gnomes.
Grey, like the Dragons, perked his ears as he heard about the current situation of the Gnomes, at least to the best knowledge of the old man from the Vaergahl Family. He had been to the Gnome World and felt like he had a rough idea of their strength. The number of camps that had been sent out isn’t close to a significant part of the Gnome’s overall strength.
The meeting that day didn’t last long, only involving the Dragons asking some questions and the Vaergahl Family Head answering most of them. According to what Grey knew, he’d stay here a few days longer before his father would come.
