After Betrayal - I Married a Handsome Tycoon-Chapter 149: I Did Miss You
Staring at the message on the screen, Connor leaned back in his chair.
Miles Murray leaned over to take a look, then clicked his tongue. "You can really stand this? Why not just go upstairs?"
Connor said calmly, "I’m not going."
Miles Murray raised an eyebrow, deliberately mimicking Moira Sloan’s tone. "Doesn’t your heart ache for her? She’s been drinking, you know." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Connor said in a low voice, "There will be plenty of chances to dote on her later. If I go now, all my previous efforts will be for nothing."
Miles said, "Such a calculating man."
With that, Miles leaned back and asked with a smirk, "You really should have known better. If you had just gone after Moira Sloan from the start, where would Shane Jennings have even fit in?"
Connor remained silent.
Miles continued, "Speaking of which, why didn’t you go after Moira back then?"
Connor turned to give him a look like he was an idiot. "She was eighteen, still a student. Was I supposed to hit on her?"
Miles said, "Then what about later? Didn’t she have several years after she graduated?"
Connor said, "It’s been four and a half years since she officially finished her apprenticeship. She spent six months after that establishing a foothold in this industry."
Miles did the math in his head and scoffed. "Perfect. She finishes her training, makes a name for herself, and runs right into Shane Jennings."
Miles’s words were a low blow. Connor shot him an icy glare but said nothing.
Meanwhile, after sending the text and getting no reply for a long time, Moira sprawled lazily on the sofa and played a game on her phone.
After two rounds, she put her phone away and went to her bedroom to sleep.
She had just lain down when the phone on her nightstand vibrated twice.
She thought it was Connor and reached for her phone, but to her surprise, it was from Flora Rhodes.
"You’re back?"
Moira: "Are your sources that good? Did you put a tracker on me?"
Flora: "Heard it from that gossip Rachel Yates. She’s also telling everyone you’re working with a foreign company, completely ignoring Master Alden’s teachings."
Moira: "She’s really paying a lot of attention to me."
Flora: "So what’s the deal over there, really?"
It was a bit complicated to explain, so Moira simply sent Flora a 56-second voice message giving a brief rundown of the situation.
After that, she sent another 56-second voice message, this time ranting about Shane Jennings’s sleazy behavior from earlier that night.
Nearly three minutes passed before Flora replied: "Like I’ve always said, the world is one big post office. You’ve got large packages, small packages, and then you’ve got... sons of bitches with no return address."
Moira chuckled. "So crude."
Flora: "You should tell that scumbag Shane Jennings, ’Since we couldn’t be a couple in this life, I’ll be reborn as your daddy in the next and cuddle up right beside you.’"
Any sleepiness Moira had been feeling was completely dispelled by Flora’s two messages, which left her wide awake and thoroughly amused.
She sat up, about to start a video call with Flora to continue her rant, but a video call from Connor came through first.
Moira’s finger trembled, and before she could even react, the call connected.
The two of them stared at each other on the screen, at a loss for words.
Moira blinked. "Where are you?"
’Judging by the background, he’s definitely not at home.’
Connor replied, "At a friend’s place."
Moira’s eyes narrowed slightly. "A friend?"
’Ever since she’d known him, she’d never seen him with any friends.’
’And from the background in the video, the owner of this place had to be either rich or influential.’
’He has friends like that?’
In response to Moira’s question, Connor’s voice came out as a low, deep rumble. "Mm."
Moira’s eyes narrowed instantly. She didn’t say anything, just stared at Connor without blinking.
She watched him, and he watched her back.
After a long moment, Connor spoke. "A male friend."
Moira asked, "How can you prove it?"
Connor said, "If you’d like, I can have him get on camera and introduce him to you."
Hearing Connor offer to introduce his friend to her, Moira’s expression shifted, and she quickly changed the subject. "As long as it’s a guy, that’s fine. I didn’t mean anything by it, it’s just..."
Before Moira could finish, Connor interrupted in his low voice, "I know."
Moira felt a pang of guilt, as if Connor could see right through her. She hooked a strand of hair around her finger, grasping for a topic. "The hotel sent up some sobering soup tonight. It was pretty good. Good enough to rival yours."
Connor’s thick brows rose slightly. "Is that right?"
Moira nodded, then paused. She leaned closer to the screen, her demeanor soft and coy, and asked in a hushed whisper, "Connor, have you missed me?"
She was so close that her luscious red lips seemed about to press against the screen.
Connor’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "Mm."
Moira’s red lips parted. "What does ’mm’ mean?"
Connor said, "Want."
Moira was feeling mischievous, so she teased him, "Want what?"
Connor replied, "You."
Moira coaxed him sweetly, "I don’t understand what you’re saying. Can’t you say it all at once?"
Connor knew what she wanted to hear, and he knew she was just being mischievous. His voice grew deeper, turning husky as he said, "Moira, I have missed you."
