After Divorce I Married a Tycoon-Chapter 16: I Will Not Get a Divorce
Adrian Sutton had just been dropping her off on his way home, but then Gavin Sinclair had shown up and, for no reason at all, started throwing punches.
He’d taken a beating for no reason. She couldn’t just ignore him, could she?
In the living room, Claire Mercer said to Adrian Sutton.
"Please, have a seat. I’ll go get you some ice."
She had no idea how much force Gavin Sinclair had put into that punch.
Half of Adrian Sutton’s face was already swelling up, along with the area around his eye. A trickle of blood oozed from the corner of his mouth.
Just looking at him made Claire Mercer ache in sympathy.
’Gavin Sinclair is a complete madman!’
’How did I never realize he was such an irritable, violent maniac?’
’I guess I was blinded by rose-tinted glasses. I never saw him for who he truly was.’
While Claire Mercer was hurting for him, Adrian Sutton was actually feeling blissful.
A wave of emotion washed over him as he watched Claire bustle about for his sake.
He could have easily dodged Gavin Sinclair’s punch.
But he didn’t. He wanted Gavin Sinclair to hit him. The harder, the better.
’It was a classic case of playing the victim. Who didn’t know how to pull that off?’
He wanted to make Claire’s heart ache for him and make her despise Gavin Sinclair.
As long as it could close the distance between him and Claire, as long as it could make her give up on Gavin Sinclair for good, what was one punch?
Besides, Claire had just slapped Gavin Sinclair for him. This punch had been well worth it.
After giving him some ice for the swelling, Claire Mercer found the first-aid kit.
"This is an analgesic spray. Use some after you’re done with the ice."
Adrian Sutton took it. "Thank you, Miss Mercer."
"I told you to leave earlier, but you wouldn’t listen. Now look at you."
Although there was a hint of reproach in Claire Mercer’s words, it was laced with sympathy and guilt.
Adrian Sutton said in a low voice, "He didn’t seem stable. I was worried he might do something to hurt you."
"I’m sorry, Miss Mercer. I’ve caused you trouble."
Claire Mercer was speechless.
’He was the one who got hit. And he’d only stayed—and taken that punch—because he was worried that madman Gavin Sinclair would hurt her.’
’So why was he apologizing to *her*?’
His apology only made Claire Mercer feel more guilty.
"You got dragged into my problems. I should be the one apologizing."
Adrian Sutton quickly shook his head, even managing a smile.
"It’s nothing, Miss Mercer. It’s just a minor injury, and it doesn’t even hurt that much. Please don’t blame yourself."
He truly didn’t feel any pain; he was completely immersed in the joy of having Claire’s concern.
"It’s getting late, and I have a banquet to attend tomorrow. You can head back on your own in a little while."
"Okay," Adrian Sutton nodded.
’He’d already made a lot of progress today. He couldn’t get greedy.’
And so, after treating the wound on his face, a very reluctant Adrian Sutton departed.
After the scene Gavin Sinclair had caused, Claire Mercer felt utterly exhausted.
A shadow fell over her already bleak mood.
She was just about to go upstairs to wash up and get a good night’s sleep when, to her surprise, Gavin Sinclair returned.
The sight of him filled Claire Mercer with revulsion, and her expression turned ice-cold.
"Gavin Sinclair, what are you doing back here?"
The reason Gavin Sinclair had come back was that he had just made a phone call.
After confirming that things between Claire Mercer and Adrian Sutton weren’t what he had imagined, he had gradually calmed down.
He knew he had gone too far earlier.
So he shed his usual arrogance, his attitude toward her no longer as cold and haughty as before.
"Claire Mercer, I was too impulsive just now. I shouldn’t have gotten physical."
"But what man could tolerate his own wife cheating on him and bringing some other guy home?"
"So you should consider my feelings too, shouldn’t you?"
Hearing this, Claire Mercer felt as if she were hallucinating.
"When you and Scarlett Jewel were fooling around in bed, did you ever think about my feelings?"
"At the scene of the car crash, when you held your frightened mistress and took her to the hospital but left me behind—did you consider my feelings then?"
"And now you want me to consider *your* feelings? Gavin Sinclair, don’t you think you’re being ridiculous?"
Gavin Sinclair was so taken aback by her words that he couldn’t get a single word out for a long moment.
After a long, awkward pause, he changed the subject.
"Your family is hosting a banquet tomorrow. I’ll go with you."
Claire Mercer sneered and coldly refused.
"There’s no need. I’ll go by myself."
’In their two years of marriage, he had never once gone back with her to her family’s home.’
’To be precise, her parents had almost never asked her to come home.’
’They only ever told her to take good care of the Sinclair Family’s heir and to do her best to please his family.’
’From start to finish, they never cared about her.’
’They just wanted to use her marriage to curry favor with the Sinclair Family and bring benefits to the Mercer Family.’
’Other than Roxanne Peyton and Stella Thorne, no one had ever cared whether she was happy or not.’
’Thinking about it now, Claire Mercer felt her life was quite pathetic.’
’Her parents didn’t love her, and the husband she had meticulously cared for for two years had tossed her aside like trash at the scene of the accident.’
Seeing that Claire Mercer wouldn’t even deign to take him to her family’s banquet, Gavin Sinclair started to feel a little anxious.
"A while ago, didn’t your father call and ask us to visit together...?"
"And did you go with me?" Claire Mercer cut him off with a cold laugh.
"What was it you told me then?"
"You said your legs had just healed, that there was a mountain of work at the office waiting for you, and that you didn’t have time to go with me."
"But what was the truth?"
"The truth is, you spent that entire afternoon shopping with your precious Scarlett, and then you took her to a hotel that night."
Exposed so bluntly by Claire Mercer, Gavin Sinclair’s expression turned awkward.
"Scarlett was injured saving me in the past, and now she has severe depression. Can’t you be a little more understanding?"
"You’re asking a wife to be understanding of her cheating husband?" Claire Mercer scoffed. "Gavin Sinclair, are you kidding me?"
Seeing Claire Mercer’s refusal to let go of the issue with Scarlett Jewel, Gavin Sinclair’s temper flared.
"Me, kidding? Go and ask around. Which heir from a wealthy family doesn’t have a few lovers on the side?"
"As the heir to the Sinclair Family, the richest family in Rhonia, is it really so outrageous for me to have a ’confidante’ on the side?"
"Besides, Scarlett is the *only* one I have on the side. In our circles, that’s practically unheard of."
"I just don’t get it. Me being with Scarlett doesn’t affect your position as my official wife. Why can’t you just be a little more magnanimous? Why do you have to insist on this divorce nonsense?"
These words made Claire Mercer laugh out loud in sheer anger.
"My official wife? Who do you think you are, the emperor?"
"And I’m supposed to be grateful that you’re not threatening my position, is that it?"
"What’s even more ridiculous is how you’ve managed to make your cheating sound so noble and refined. It’s a real eye-opener."
"There’s nothing more to say. I’m getting this divorce."
Faced with Claire Mercer’s blatant mockery, Gavin Sinclair looked mortified.
"In any case, don’t even think about a divorce. I am not signing any papers."
