After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret-Chapter 135: They’re Here So Soon
The woman quickly apologized to Nina Jacobs, but still asked tentatively:
"He’s just a country kid, doesn’t know any better. Please don’t mind him.
A Space Superpower User stole our grain before,
so now he has to ask everyone he meets...
But... you aren’t actually a Space Superpower User, are you?"
A small flame appeared in Nina Jacobs’s hand:
"I’m not, and neither is my friend."
"That’s good, that’s good."
The couple exchanged a glance.
"We’ll just stay in the house across from here."
Nina Jacobs said, pointing at the open-gated house across the way.
’This village is strange.’
’There isn’t even a single zombie.’
’And this family... there’s something off about them, something I can’t quite put my finger on.’
’I’d better be careful.’
"Across the way?
Oh, dear. It’s filthy over there, not a suitable place to stay."
The old man from before coughed twice and said.
"It’s fine."
Nina Jacobs had already seen it when she arrived; no one was living in the house across the way.
"Don’t worry, Dad.
Even though it’s safer for us all to stay together, I’m sure they’re not afraid of the Zombie Rats."
The son-in-law, Wesley Hawthorne, said.
"There are Zombie Rats here?"
Nina Jacobs’s eyes lit up.
The battle two days ago had shown her the power of the Little Zombie Rats.
It’s just that she lost a few of them that day.
The Little Zombie Rats didn’t take up any space in her storage, making them a perfect natural backup weapon.
If she could acquire some more here, that would be for the best.
"Yes... You know about Zombie Rats too?"
Wesley Hawthorne asked.
’Why would someone get so excited after hearing about Zombie Rats?’
’I must have seen it wrong.’
"I know a little.
Well, we won’t disturb you any further."
Nina Jacobs drove the car directly into the courtyard across the way and prepared to close the gate.
The family of four from across the street was staring at her in unison.
"Young lady, the rats in the village are huge,
be careful at night."
the old man said.
Nina Jacobs nodded and closed the gate without hesitation.
The next second, she activated "Five Senses Enhancement".
There seemed to be nothing unusual in the courtyard, and there were no sounds coming from inside the house.
Nina Jacobs took out a fully charged floor lamp and placed it in the room.
The room was instantly illuminated.
"Don’t get out yet."
Nina Jacobs said to Wayne Warner, who was about to get out of the car.
Zombie Rats were active here, and Wayne Warner could only walk slowly right now, unable to make any large movements.
"Okay."
Wayne Warner obediently pulled the leg he had stuck out back into the car.
The room had a concrete floor, with some unknown stains on it.
The furniture inside was strewn about haphazardly, and there were blood spatters in the corner.
Further in was a staircase leading to the second floor.
There wasn’t much clutter upstairs; it looked relatively cleaner.
Nina Jacobs decided to set up her safe house upstairs.
Zombie Rats could appear from any corner, including but not limited to sewers and various vents.
Sleeping in the safe house was the only way to be truly safe.
After locking the downstairs door from the inside, Nina Jacobs released a Little Zombie Rat in a corner at the entrance to the staircase.
This was so she would immediately notice if someone suddenly broke in.
Under "Five Senses Enhancement", there seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary in the vicinity.
She tried to listen in on the family of four across the way.
She found that they were discussing something.
"...She looked so clean, I thought for sure she was a Space Superpower User."
"They’re just two broke-asses. Nothing in the car,
but I don’t know if there’s anything in the trunk."
The one speaking was the little boy.
"Did you really get a clear look?"
Wesley Hawthorne asked in disbelief.
"If you ask me, that guy must be the Space Superpower User.
Otherwise, why is he too scared to even get out of the car?
They say he’s injured, but he looked fine to me."
the woman said.
"COUGH COUGH...
Never mind all that. We’ll find out once we capture them and ask.
If they have supplies, we’ll make them hand them over.
If they don’t, we’ll just lock them up with the others."
This was the old man’s voice.
Nina Jacobs took a bite of a pork rib, listening to their conversation with great interest.
’That old man and the kid are definitely trouble, just as I thought.’
’The old man acts as the lookout at the village entrance. The kid looks for supplies.’
’As for that man and woman, they don’t resemble the little boy at all.’
’But since they said "lock them up with the others"...’
’...that means there must be other people in this village.’
Nina Jacobs continued to scan her surroundings while eating with Wayne Warner.
She did indeed hear other sounds.
But they were more like sobs and painful groans...
And it wasn’t just one or two people.
After a while, she heard a series of muffled thuds.
They seemed to be coming from underground.
It was the sound of something hitting metal.
"...Open the door! Open the door!
Someone’s about to die in here!
I still have medicine in my medical kit! He needs his medication!"
"It’s no use.
They don’t care if we live or die.
They killed the ones who tried to escape before."
"...It’s all my fault.
I shouldn’t have trusted that little boy.
I shouldn’t have eaten the food they gave us."
After speaking, a woman cried for a while.
This was followed by a long silence.
Nina Jacobs withdrew her focus.
’It sounds like these people were locked up by that family of four.’
’And it seems like they’re being held in more than one place.’
Next, Nina Jacobs heard voices coming from several other locations.
’The closest is even right next door?!’
’No, that’s Wesley Hawthorne’s voice.’
It was accompanied by the sound of a club striking flesh and crying.
In a dim cellar.
A woman was crying and pleading loudly:
"There’s really nothing left in my space!
I’m begging you, let him go! I’ve taken everything out."
Wesley Hawthorne threw down the bloody wooden club in his hand and grabbed the woman’s hair:
"There are sixteen people in your group, and you’re the only Space Superpower User,
how could you only have this little? I think you’re just trying to hide things.
That’s fine. I’ll make you watch as I torture them all to death."
After Wesley Hawthorne finished speaking, another round of a man’s miserable screams and wails followed.
’So it’s all for supplies?’
Nina Jacobs understood now.
These four were posted here probably to intercept passersby and loot them for any and all available supplies.
This kind of thing wasn’t uncommon in the apocalypse.
But for so many people to have been captured, these four must not be easy to deal with.
Sure enough, Nina Jacobs soon heard a knock from downstairs.
"They’re here already."
She sighed.
’Looks like it’s going to be another sleepless night.’
The person at the door was none other than the little boy from across the way.
"My mom made some rice porridge,
for you and your friend."
The little boy was holding two bowls of steaming hot rice porridge, looking a bit more innocent than before.
But Nina Jacobs knew it was all an act.
"Oh, great."
Nina Jacobs took the two bowls of porridge and closed the door again.
"Didn’t even say thank you.
Just wait, I’ll turn you into a pincushion later."
the little boy muttered after walking back to his own yard.
Little did he know that Nina Jacobs, across the way, had heard every word.
"Did you deliver it?
Based on the others, it should only take about ten minutes."
The woman was squatting by the door, cracking melon seeds.
"We should have Wesley Hawthorne come back.
You two can go over together in a bit."
the old man said.
For some reason, he felt a strange sense of panic.
"The drug Wesley Hawthorne has is meant for livestock.
Knocking those two out will be a piece of cake.
She’s just one Fire Element Superpower User.
Hugh and I will be enough."
the woman said with a look of indifference.
