Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Freedom at Last

Shane Lockwood’s expression turned grim, and the air around him grew frigid. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet, as if it were the dead of winter.

Eliza Sutton couldn’t help but shiver. Rubbing the goosebumps on her arms, she asked in confusion, "Wha... What’s wrong?"

’Did I say something wrong?’

Eliza Sutton racked her brain, feeling that her previous response had been perfect, completely catering to Shane Lockwood’s pride as a domineering man.

So she said, "You don’t need to worry, Mr. Lockwood. If Mom and Grandpa ask, I’ll take full responsibility. I’ll tell them I’m the one who wants the divorce. That it’s because of my humble background and insecurities that I feel unworthy of being by your side, and to avoid holding you back, I felt I had no other choice."

"You’ve certainly thought of everything." Shane Lockwood’s tone was dripping with sarcasm.

Eliza Sutton could finally confirm Shane Lockwood was unhappy. After racking her brain and still not understanding why, she said cautiously, "It’s only what I should do. There’s no need to be so formal, Mr. Lockwood."

Shane Lockwood stared at Eliza Sutton coldly before saying after a moment, "Then do as you please."

Eliza Sutton breathed a sigh of relief. "I’m going to take a shower then."

When Shane Lockwood said nothing, Eliza Sutton turned and walked toward the bathroom.

Just as she was about to step inside, Shane Lockwood’s chilling voice drifted over. "You’re sleeping in the guest room tonight."

Eliza Sutton agreed, turned on her heel, and headed to the guest room.

Hearing the door click shut, Shane Lockwood’s expression grew incredibly dark.

’She actually just left. Just like that.’

’He had to admit, her actions were unexpected. But if she thought he would compromise on anything, she was sorely mistaken!’

After her shower, Eliza Sutton called Woody.

"Is the house ready?"

"It’s ready. We’re set to transfer the title tomorrow," Woody said. "Boss, when are you planning to move in?"

"Tomorrow, if possible. Within the next two days at the latest."

Woody was surprised. "That fast? Boss, can you bear to leave?"

"Bear to leave what?"

"I mean, Shane Lockwood is so handsome. You’re already married to him, but you’re getting a divorce without even taking a bite? I think it’s such a waste. You should at least get a taste!"

Hearing the genuine regret in Woody’s voice, Eliza Sutton lost her patience. "What nonsense is this? Am I the kind of person who takes advantage of others when they’re vulnerable?"

"Of course not! My boss is noble and righteous. I just feel like, your marriage of propitiousness already woke him up. If you sleep with him, with all that physical contact, maybe he’ll live even longer. That way, you’ll have a place to go when you need to blow off some steam."

"Do you even hear the outrageous things you’re saying?"

"I’m really just looking out for you, Boss. How about this? Before the divorce is final, go get a taste of that prime cut. That way, it won’t be a total loss."

"..." Eliza Sutton said, "I think you’ve had too much free time lately. How about we find a place to spar?"

Woody’s tone changed in an instant. He said quickly, "Boss, it’s getting late! You should get some rest. Sleeping early is good for your health."

With that, he immediately hung up the phone.

Eliza Sutton snorted.

She put her phone away, walked to the French doors, and pushed them open.

The night wind rushed in, whipping her hair into a frenzy, yet her heart felt an unprecedented sense of relief.

’Finally... I’m finally going to be free.’

...

「The next day.」

When Eliza Sutton came downstairs, Mrs. Zimmerman already had breakfast ready.

Shane Lockwood was already at the table.

Seeing Eliza Sutton, Mrs. Zimmerman hurried to greet her. "Mistress, would you prefer a Chinese or a Western-style breakfast?"

"Chinese style, please. Just some congee would be fine."

"Of course." Mrs. Zimmerman quickly brought her breakfast over. The portion was small, but it was nutritionally balanced.

Just as Mrs. Zimmerman was about to set it down in front of Eliza Sutton, Shane Lockwood’s cold voice cut in. "Have her eat in the sunroom."

Mrs. Zimmerman froze. "Young Master, that wouldn’t be appropriate."

’How could she make the Mistress eat in the sunroom?’

Shane Lockwood looked up, his gaze sweeping over her coldly. "What? Does my word no longer carry any weight here?"

Eliza Sutton stood up, stopping Mrs. Zimmerman. "It’s alright, just take it to the sunroom for me."

Mrs. Zimmerman quickly complied.

Eliza Sutton glanced at Shane Lockwood’s icy expression and said, "Mr. Lockwood, if my presence bothers you, I can move out and stay in a hotel for a few days. Just let me know when you’re free, and we can go finalize things."

Shane Lockwood’s expression instantly turned glacial, his gaze as sharp as a knife.

Eliza Sutton’s heart clenched. Just as she was about to speak, Shane Lockwood averted his gaze.

"Whatever."

He put down his chopsticks and wheeled himself away.

Eliza Sutton was completely baffled. ’What’s gotten into Shane Lockwood?’

She quietly asked Mrs. Zimmerman, "Did someone make Mr. Lockwood angry?"

"No." ’No one at Seacliff Manor would dare provoke the Young Master,’ she thought.

"Then it must be something from work. Men are such a mystery, aren’t they?"

Just then, Emmett Lockwood came downstairs, rubbing his eyes. When he saw Eliza Sutton, he hurried over and looked up with his adorable little face. "Good morning, Mommy."

Looking at how cute Emmett was, Eliza Sutton felt her mood lift instantly.

’Shane Lockwood might be a pain to deal with, but his son is absolutely adorable.’

"Good morning, Emmett. Do you want to eat breakfast?"

"Mhm, I’ll eat breakfast with Mommy."

Just then, a servant brought over Emmett Lockwood’s breakfast.

Emmett Lockwood pulled Eliza Sutton down to sit with him. "I’ll wait for them to bring Mommy’s breakfast, and then I’ll eat with you."

Hearing this, Mrs. Zimmerman immediately retrieved Eliza Sutton’s breakfast from the sunroom.

Emmett Lockwood’s brows knitted together. "Why was Mommy’s breakfast in the sunroom?"

’For as long as he could remember, the family had always eaten breakfast in the dining room.’

"Well..." Mrs. Zimmerman hesitated.

Eliza Sutton said, "The scenery at Seacliff Manor is so lovely, I originally wanted to eat in the sunroom while enjoying the view. But seeing you made me change my mind, Emmett. I’d much rather eat breakfast with you than look at some pretty view."

Emmett Lockwood broke into a smile, his eyes twinkling adorably.

...

「The Lockwood Group Conference Room.」

Shane Lockwood sat at the head of the table, flipping through the documents in his hands. The atmosphere around him was oppressive, and the mood in the conference room felt frozen solid. Everyone unconsciously slowed their breathing, terrified that the slightest sound might disturb him.

The manager from the planning department, who had submitted the file, kept his head bowed low, wishing he could simply turn invisible.

Suddenly—

SLAM—

Shane Lockwood threw the file down on the table, his voice as cold as ice.

"This is the proposal the planning department came up with? Manager Campbell, be honest. When you wrote this, did you remember to bring your head but leave your brain at home?"

Manager Campbell stammered, "I... I’ll redo it right away."

Shane Lockwood said coldly, "If it’s not done right next time, just pack your things and get out. The Lockwood Group doesn’t employ useless people!"

The staff answered in trepidation. Only after Shane Lockwood had left did everyone collapse into their chairs, looking as if they’d just survived a catastrophe.

"That scared me to death! I really thought I was a goner that time."

Wiping the cold sweat from his brow, Manager Campbell asked, "Secretary Irvine, you have to tell us, what’s gotten into President Lockwood? Why is he in such a foul mood?"
