After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 74: Shane Lockwood, When Are You Going to Step Down?
Emmett Lockwood saw that Eliza Sutton was having a pleasant chat with Eva Monroe, so he took his watch phone to the restroom and called Shane Lockwood.
The phone rang for a moment before connecting, and Emmett Lockwood spoke right away.
"Shane Lockwood, when are you going to step down and give me the president’s seat?"
Shane Lockwood was in the middle of a meeting. His phone was connected to the main screen, and as soon as the call went through, Emmett Lockwood’s voice boomed from the speakers, filling the entire conference room.
Walter Ellington, who was taking a sip of water, sprayed it everywhere. The finance director, who was reporting on the last quarter’s financials, immediately fell silent. He wished he could retract into himself like a turtle, so he’d have a shell for protection when President Lockwood inevitably blew up.
Erik Irvine quickly unplugged Shane Lockwood’s phone and handed it to him, his eyes filled with sympathy for his boss.
’His boss really has it rough.’
’Not only does he have endless external troubles, but his own son is also after his job.’
Shane Lockwood took the phone and strode out of the conference room, his handsome face grim.
When he spoke, his expression was murderous. "You’d better have a good explanation for what the hell you’re talking about."
"What do you mean, ’what the hell’? I’m telling the truth. Mr. Shepherd said your injuries were so severe that... you know. It means you can only ever have me as your son. So, all the money you’re making now is for me anyway. Whether you give it to me sooner or later, it’s still mine. So why not just give it to me now?"
Shane Lockwood narrowed his eyes, his tone turning dangerous. "You want my position? Why? You must have a reason for wanting me to abdicate early."
Don’t be fooled by Emmett Lockwood’s age; he could tell Shane Lockwood was trying to trick him into revealing something.
Shane Lockwood suspected someone had put him up to making this call.
Emmett Lockwood wasn’t an idiot. He would never mention his mother’s name, especially since this had nothing to do with her anyway.
So, Emmett Lockwood said, "I read one of those overbearing CEO novels today. In the book, the moronic male lead’s father thought his son was God’s gift to women, so he threw five million at the female lead. I have to say, that’s just way too cheap."
"I learned a lesson from it. I need to be the boss. Only when I’m the one in charge will people not dare to run their mouths. And no one will ever dare to throw a check at the person I like. After all, a measly five million is just insulting."
"..." A vein throbbed on Shane Lockwood’s temple, and his handsome face was a mask of fury. "Who let you read that kind of garbage!"
Emmett Lockwood flinched at the yelling, but the thought of his mother, who had to move out of the Lockwood home feeling wronged, filled him with a new surge of courage.
"Dad, are you going to step down or not? If you refuse..."
"And if I refuse, what are you going to do about it?"
"Then don’t blame me for rebelling."
’This little thing... not very big, but very bold.’
Shane Lockwood was so angry he laughed. "Fine. Starting tomorrow, you’ll come to the company after school to learn the ropes. You can leave when I leave. If you can manage to snatch this seat out from under me, then it’s all yours."
Emmett Lockwood thought about his father, who rose earlier than a rooster and went to bed later than a dog. He immediately backed down. ’Yeah, never mind.’
’If I really ended up as busy as that...’
’I’d have no time to spend with Mom.’
’Not worth it.’
So, Emmett Lockwood switched to a bewildered tone. "Dad? Why am I on the phone with you? Oh, I know, I must have been sleepwalking again. Dad, you go back to making money. I’m going back to sleep."
Shane Lockwood stared at the disconnected call and laughed in exasperation.
’That little brat is getting more and more audacious!’
’One day, I’m going to have to teach that little rascal a lesson!’
...
Eliza Sutton worked like crazy for two nights straight.
Every evening after clocking out from the Lockwood Design Department, she was dragged over to the Stroud Tower headquarters by Saul Reynolds, where she’d slave away at design drafts like a workhorse late into the night.
Eliza Sutton really didn’t want to get caught up in this rat race.
Besides, what kind of late-night work could possibly be better than sleep?
But she had no choice. If she didn’t draw, Saul Reynolds would cling to her leg and cry.
He’d wail about whether she was dissatisfied with him as the general manager, or if she thought he was too incompetent, and that was why Stroud Tower’s market share couldn’t beat The Lockwood Group’s design department.
And then he’d constantly threaten to atone for his failures with his death.
What could Eliza Sutton do?
She could only keep slogging away at the designs. She couldn’t let such a hardworking and dedicated subordinate actually atone with his death.
After burning the midnight oil for two days and nights, Eliza Sutton was feeling drained.
But of course, that’s when she received a call from Mrs. Lockwood, summoning her to the Lockwood Estate for a family banquet.
Although she and Shane Lockwood had already agreed to a divorce, they weren’t officially separated yet. She still had to fulfill her duties as a Lockwood daughter-in-law.
Eliza Sutton could only force herself to cheer up, put on a fake smile, and return to the Lockwood home.
The moment she appeared, countless eyes were on her.
Every one of them greeted her, but no one gathered around to talk to her.
In the end, in their eyes, this bride they brought in for good luck was simply not qualified to speak to them as an equal.
’Fine by me.’
’Saves me the trouble.’
Emmett Lockwood, however, was not happy. To him, his mother was the most important person in the world, and as her biggest champion, seeing Eliza get ignored pushed all of his buttons.
Emmett Lockwood instantly blew his top.
"Mommy, you wait here. I’m going to go find them. How dare they look down on you! Watch me go settle the score."
Eliza Sutton quickly pulled Emmett Lockwood back. "What are you going to do?"
"They’re ignoring you and making you look bad!" Emmett Lockwood’s cheeks were puffed out, like a pufferfish about to explode with anger.
"It’s nothing. It’s not like this will happen many more times anyway," Eliza Sutton said, completely unbothered.
Emmett Lockwood froze. "What do you mean, ’not many more times’? Are you going to leave me and Dad?"
As he spoke, his voice started to tremble, and his big eyes turned red as if he were about to cry.
"Of course not!" Eliza Sutton said, flustered.
She felt that getting close to people was always a problem, especially with little ones like him.
’Once you get emotionally attached, you can’t stand to see them cry.’
’Seeing his eyes turn red just breaks my heart.’
Eliza Sutton didn’t dare mention that she and Shane Lockwood were about to split up, so she explained, "What I meant was, after we interact a few more times, they’ll get to know what kind of person I am and will naturally warm up to me."
Emmett Lockwood let out a long sigh of relief, his adorable little face filled with thankfulness. "Oh, so that’s what you meant. I’m so glad you’re not leaving."
His small, milk-scented body snuggled into Eliza Sutton’s arms, and he hugged her waist. "Mommy, if you really do leave Dad one day, please take me with you. I can endure hardship, and I can earn money. I even have my own secret stash of cash. Just don’t leave me alone in the Lockwood family."
Emmett Lockwood’s words made Eliza Sutton’s heart ache. She began to wonder what method she could use to convince Shane Lockwood to sell his son to her.
Suddenly, an intense gaze, impossible to ignore, fell upon her.
Eliza Sutton looked up and saw Shane Lockwood entering, maneuvering his wheelchair.
