After Rebirth, I Accept The Arranged Marriage-Chapter 37: Flipping the Table
The call wasn’t to a personal number, but to the landline of the Morgan Group’s legal department.
The person who answered was an intern, but even an intern at Morgan Group’s legal department would have a resume impressive enough to stand out anywhere.
"Miss Lawson, hello..."
Wendy Lawson was only on the phone for a few minutes. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to say more, but the person on the other end was too busy and gave her very little time.
"...I’ve registered your issue, and it’s now awaiting approval from a superior. You can monitor your account for any further updates. If you have any other questions, you’re welcome to call the Morgan Group’s legal department."
Listening to the polite yet icy voice, Wendy Lawson felt a chill.
Her boss had told her to call and apologize personally, but the apology wasn’t delivered directly to the person involved. Instead, it was being relayed through a major corporation’s legal department.
She knew before calling that she was dealing with the Morgan Group, and Wendy Lawson couldn’t imagine who could command the legal department of such a massive corporation.
’Could the person I accidentally photographed that day be one of the young ladies from the Morgan family?’
A chill ran down Wendy Lawson’s spine.
"How did it go?" Her assistant, having already packed up the laptop, looked at Wendy Lawson, who was standing before her, seemingly lost in thought.
Wendy Lawson shook her head. "I don’t know."
The assistant looked bewildered. ’What does "I don’t know" mean?’
Wendy Lawson nodded and opened her Xiaohongshu account. Just as she’d expected, it was still banned. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
She sighed. "The person on the phone just told me to wait. As for how long, they didn’t give me a clear answer."
The assistant gasped, her mouth falling open. "Wendy, weren’t you able to contact the young lady in the photo? If she forgives you, wouldn’t this all be over?"
A bleak smile appeared on Wendy Lawson’s face. "It would be great if I could actually contact her."
The problem was, she still had no idea who the other party was.
The assistant thought for a moment. "Why don’t you ask some of your connections to see what they can find out?"
Wendy Lawson was considered a top-tier influencer. She attended plenty of events and naturally knew many people in the entertainment industry.
Those people might actually know something.
Wendy Lawson nodded. "I’ll give it a try."
Jessie Sterling had no idea someone was desperately trying to find her contact information. To thank Victor Morgan for helping her deal with that whole online mess, she had first gone to an auction and used her card to buy two sets of antique teacups rumored to have been custom-made for royalty. Then, while shopping with Lynn Jennings, she also picked up two pairs of cufflinks she thought looked rather nice.
During this time, Jessie Sterling saw Lynn Jennings take several calls. Lynn didn’t try to hide them from her, so Jessie heard most of the conversations.
When the two of them were tired from shopping, they found a dessert shop by the plaza and sat down. Jessie Sterling looked at Lynn Jennings in confusion.
"What have you been up to these past few days?" Jessie Sterling couldn’t help but ask. She had heard the two words "Scitech Pharma," and it was hard not to overthink it.
Jessie Sterling didn’t know much about Scitech Pharma, but she knew it was the arch-rival of the Jennings family’s pharmaceutical company. For her, that was enough.
Lynn Jennings picked up her iced Americano and took a sip. Seeming to enjoy the sour, bitter taste, she squinted her eyes. "Didn’t you hear everything already?"
Jessie Sterling was at a loss for words. "...Are you really going to work at their research institute?"
These pharmaceutical companies usually have their own research institutes that specialize in biopharmaceutical research and development.
The Jennings family had one, too.
"Yep," Lynn Jennings said with a grin. "Would I joke about my own career?"
Jessie Sterling was speechless.
’A career path like that seems a little high-risk,’ she thought.
Seeing Jessie Sterling’s serious, earnest expression, Lynn Jennings couldn’t help but laugh.
"I’m the one doing it, so why are you so nervous?"
Jessie Sterling pouted. "Because doing something like this is worrisome."
’Isn’t this just blatantly going against her family?’
"Have you considered the consequences if your family finds out?" Jessie Sterling asked.
Lynn Jennings nodded. "Of course I have. That’s why I’m waiting for them to transfer the money to my card before I start the job."
Jessie Sterling was speechless.
’Should I be praising her for being so "clever"?’
Lynn Jennings ate a piece of a soft orange cookie. "Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
Jessie Sterling knew the Jennings family situation was complicated, so she couldn’t offer any good advice. She had never experienced a fight over inheritance. All she could do now was hug Lynn Jennings’s arm. "Even if you run out of money, I can support you."
Lynn Jennings pulled her arm away in mock disgust. "That’s not happening."
Jessie Sterling was speechless.
The weather was lovely. Jessie Sterling took out her phone and snapped a couple of photos of a street performer playing the violin in the plaza.
She opened her social media app and was surprised to find quite a few little red dots.
Jessie Sterling was a little confused. She had only registered her account two or three years ago and had sporadically posted some random snapshots. She probably had just over a hundred followers.
Getting four likes on a post was considered "going viral" for her, and comments were practically nonexistent.
Now, as Jessie Sterling stared at the red "99+" notification badge, for a moment she thought she had accidentally logged into someone else’s account.
"What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?" Lynn Jennings thought the dessert shop’s soft orange cookies were delicious and had just gone to order another plate. When she returned with the plate, she saw Jessie Sterling frozen with her phone in hand, as if someone had hit a pause button.
Jessie Sterling looked up, her gaze still dazed.
"Lynn..." Jessie Sterling began, a helpless look on her face. "There are suddenly so many notifications... on my phone..."
Lynn Jennings raised an eyebrow. "Hm?"
Jessie Sterling pulled her to sit beside her, then shoved the phone into Lynn Jennings’s hands. "Take a look! Is someone flaming me?!"
Lynn Jennings was speechless.
It sounded like a ridiculous thing to say, but coming from Jessie Sterling, it somehow felt perfectly reasonable.
Lynn Jennings remembered when Jessie Sterling first started using Xiaohongshu. At the time, her feed recommended a lot of influencers to her.
One influencer posted a picture of a villa with the caption, "It feels so good to be home."
When Jessie Sterling scrolled past it, she recognized the villa as one of her family’s resorts. So, she honestly commented below, "Liar. This is a resort that costs six thousand a night. Is this your home?"
As a result, her brutally honest comment was hounded by the influencer’s fans, who left dozens of angry replies.
To this day, Lynn Jennings could still vividly remember the way Jessie Sterling’s delighted expression had instantly soured the moment she happily opened her social media notifications.
